Yup thats what the new Rolling Stone poll comes up with, he is placed at #7 WTF were they thinking? He is a great songwriter but he really sucks at singing. Aretha Franklin is #1 thats OK I guess. But Dylan.....::rollseyes::

Sinister

That's like saying Jimi Hendrix is a better singer than guitar player. Who the fuck at Rolling Stone came up with this list, and how much dope has he smoked??? ::blink::
Aretha Franklin is as big as a volkswagon now.

I beg your pardon then..I would never insult the voice of the Queen Of Soul...just her fat ass.

The Antagonist

Not for nuthin' but whether you like the band or not, Joey Ramone had a very beautiful voice.

Every time I hear the Ramones I wax nostalgic to hear them live again. All of them are dead except for Tommy I think.

What about Ton Loc? - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=387ZDGSKVSg
Great voice.
I miss Aretha but am glad Gladys Knight still has a great voice.
I saw Dylan in concert in 1978, lets just say he was a great song writer and when in the studio they could do wonders with his vocals for the recording, Live left a bit to be desired.
Is music theory needed to write songs?
(02-15-2019, 12:09 AM)sally Wrote: [ -> ]Is music theory needed to write songs?

necessary, my guess is no, but it wouldn't hurt
case in point: Amazing Grace: the true story of the conversion of its composer

written in the late 1770's by John Newton. Newton had no musical training, in fact he was a wretched man  Conscripted in the Royall Navy as a young man, he lived a life of debauchery as most sailors do. When his service was over he became a slave trader. In the late 1740's he was on a vessel off the coast of Ireland during a violent storm that battered the vessel severely.  That experience started his conversion to Christianity; in the mid 1750's he stopped slaving and left the sea for good. He started studying Theology, and was ordained in 1764. He has written many hymns, but Amazing Grace is known all over the world.

So I guess all you need is proper motivation or the right inspiration to write a song.

Every one has heard Amazing Grace, but how many knew the story of its creator?
I've of course heard the song, but did not know the story of the writer. I asked about music theory because my husband and son actually started to get into a heated argument about it earlier. I said jesus christ who gives a fuck and left the room. Then I figured this thread was a good place to mention it. If BG was around he'd probably have a say.
She wanted a pearl necklace, it didn't cost nuthin but it sure was fun.
Music Theory is not required to write songs. Some believe it helps with continuity, others say it's too restrictive. I'm of the opinion that whatever works for a particular writer works because the audience is where the rubber meets the road. If they like it and you've employed music theory then that works for that audience, but on the other hand we have "mumble rap" now which doesn't employ music theory, or even most conventional music standards on the whole, but their audience is eating it up. *shruggs* I've had 2 years of music theory. I lost interest.
