It's the first stage release of what is known as a tag cloud. I am not yet clear on how it works. Something like it grabs the most often used words in the popular topics (their first posts). The font size depends upon how much they are used and/or how popular the thread is they came from - I'm not sure, I have to go get educated about this feature.
It's like the ramblings of a schizophrenic with a lightning storm going off in their head.
For some reason it cracks me up (on this site).
