Thanks for the update, MS - just found the latest info you referenced:

Snipped:
Governor Dan Malloy revealed that the gunman committed suicide as the first responders were closing in.

"He shot his way into the building. He penetrated the building by literally shooting an entrance into the building. That's what an assault weapon can do for you," he said.

"He discharged to make an opening and then went through it, went to the first classroom ... went to the second classroom.

"We surmise that it was during the second classroom episode that he heard responders coming and apparently at that, decided to take his own life."

I think he knew exactly what he was doing by going to a place he knew would be filled with women & children rather than to a place that was filled with men working.

What a douche. Do you know how many ways one can get through a glass door without an 'assault weapon'? How about a hammer, sledge, spring loaded center punch? Those are all things that will break glass in the same amount of time it takes to pull a trigger.

CT Gov. Dan Malloy is an ideologue of the worst kind. He has a history of exploiting incidents for his own political gain, and has done it shamelessly his entire career. Just ask Dr. Petit... and now he is at it again. Before these little babies are IN THE GROUND, he's not letting his crisis go to waste.

Asshole.

I know very little about Governor Malloy, but the "that's what an assault weapon can do for you" statement jumped right out at me as a transparent opportunistic statement to support stricter gun control laws (either in his state and/or federally).

Guessin' that's his agenda and he's striking while the fire is hot...

Have fun reading up about him. He's as slick and slimy as they come.

I'm gonna read up about the victims when my heart gets a little stronger.

Malloy doesn't really peak my interest. In this incident, he just happens to be the governor of the state where it occurred. Could have happened anywhere, sadly...

CNN is reporting the evacuation of a church there this morning? Some type of threat?

St. Rose of Lima Church in Newtown has been evacuated. State police have responded to the church, according to NBC reporter Audrey Washington.

A noon mass was being held at the Roman Catholic Church at 46 Church Hill Road.

Witnesses at the mass said police entered the church and told parishioners that a threat had been made against the church and the surrounding area and that everyone had to leave immediately.

More than a dozen state troopers armed with assault rifles entered the church's education center next to the church, according to Washington.

Parishioners and news media were told to leave the church property.

I am so disgusted with those that would use the bodies of these little kids as a soap box to push their political agenda.......they should all be horse whipped!

Listen, I'm a reasonable person.

I get just as disgusted with gun supporters who try and pretend that guns don't do the killing.

'Oh well, if he didn't have guns he would've driven a car bomb into the school, or run in there with a machete, blah, blah, blah.

You people are equally offensive to me.

Then some bring up DUI's and want to draw a parallel.

Wrong.

I'm not supporting banning guns. That'll never happen.

But please gun owners, stop with your FAUX outrage over the governor trying to make some sort of statement about guns, and.... Ready for this??

I haven't posted in here in along time, I have been sick and busy. But HOLY SHIT. As a mother, and as a teacher- of a kindergarten classroom I haven't been able to stomach this. I have tried over and over again. I have rationalized, I have visioned it being my classroom, me, where would I hide the kids? What would my family do without me? What would I be like if I watched my kids die and I was helpless? What if this happened to my child.

I have never been so affected by something in the news, but this... this kills me. I feel like it is connected to me personally. I just cannot stop crying.

not that this is one of the best sources but I read that he shot the mother while she was still sleeping.

"Law enforcement officials have said they believe Nancy Lanza was likely still asleep when her son came into her bedroom -- carrying one of her own guns -- and murdered her."

Show some class, huh?

Gun supporters love nothing more than when the smoke blows over and people move on.

It's time for meaningful dialogue. Quit running from it.

How about one time one of you gun supporters acknowledge that guns do the killing?

That'd be refreshing.

I'm actually FOR trying to even the playing field and ARMING administrators at school. I'd like them to at least have a chance.

We are in the middle of a debate about gun control. Why did Nancy Lanza have a registered assault weapon in her home? This shouldn't be even possible. In my State, you can sign a piece of paper and get permission to carry concealed weapon. Last year, a pissed off driver shot someone who cut him off on highway. It goes back to current problem of guns getting into the wrong hands and everyone agrees, we need to stop the "crazies" from getting guns. How do we do this, since we don't have a
system in place to identify the seriously mentally ill. Although shooter wasn't old enough to legally purchase gun, it didn't stop him.
The father of one of the young victims spoke (Mr. Parker) and he has such grace and compassion. He addressed the pain of the
shooter's family which was a very classy thing to do.

Congress will be opening with a bill to ban assault rifles. I haven't got time right now to go find the article I briefly skimmed over but Diane Feinstein will introduce it.

The gun control topic is going down in two separate threads, so I opened a dedicated thread for it in the Discussion/Opinion/Debate forum. I saw the article about the Feinstein bill and will post it in the new thread.
