Murder victim, Skylar Neese

Skylar was a high school honor roll student who sneaked out of the house on the night of July 6th, 2012. Her parents initially assumed she had run away. Surveillance cam showed her getting into a car near her home.

For nearly nine months, her parents searched for her - initially with the help of Skylar's best friend, Sheila Eddy, whom they had thought of like another daughter. Mary Neese said Eddy had even helped hand out flyers in their neighborhood.

The break in the case came Jan. 3rd, when another of Skylar's best friends, Rachel Shoaf, finally told investigators the truth - and where to find the body.

Shoaf told investigators that she and Sheila Eddy had murdered Neese in the Pennsylvania woods because they didn't want to be friends with her any longer. Skylar's parents reportedly suspect there's more to the story.

Skylar's remains were found hidden under branches in a secluded spot in Wayne Township, Pa., near the unincorporated West Virginia community of Macdale. Shoaf told police that she and Eddy had been unable to bury Neese.

Shoaf pleaded guilty to second degree murder and is awaiting sentencing. Prosecutors have said they plan to recommend a 20-year prison sentence for Shoaf and will oppose any move to have her sentenced as a juvenile. But she could get as many as 40 years under the law.

Eddy's case has been moved to adult court; she refuses to plead guilty.

Rachel Shoaf, confessed murderer ....Sheila Eddy, accused mastermind/suspected murderer

These girls deserve maximum sentences, IMO. No breaks, no early release...

Side note: The murder of Shanda Sharer back in 1992 by female teen acquaintances is one that always sticks with me; unbelievable the level of cruelty involved. A couple of the girls involved that night (but not the hands-on torturers/killers) have been released from prison; I wish they'd all been locked up for good.

Here's Shanda's story:

Usually when my friendships have ended we just drift out of touch... I never considered whacking them and getting rid of them altogether.

The parents who raise the evil bitches, or the parents who raise the boys who gravitate towards the evil bitches? Smiley_emoticons_wink

Anyway, Sheila Eddy is a piece of work. She kept up her act that she was so concerned and she participated in search efforts for months; up til Rachel Shoaf spilled the beans. Here's one of her tweets.

Future legal proceedings, including Eddy's trial, will be held in open court.

hah Good one Hotd, I pay attention, and run them off. Except the DL, she lasted 10 years. Young girls today are hot messes! Many parents refusing to make sacrifices for their children and screwing them up. Jmo

Shelia Eddy, 17, pleaded "not guilty" at her arraignment in adult court today.

Eddy, Shoaf and Skylar Neese

Rachel Shoaf's sentencing for her part in Skylar's murder is still pending. She's expected to receive between 20 - 40 years. Since prosecutors are recommending 20, Shoaf could well be out of prison by the time she's around 35.

I think Eddy's delusional. Given the crime was premeditated and prosecutors have Shoaf's confirmed confession as to the murder plot that she and Eddy carried out (Shoaf will likely be called to testify against Eddy), Eddy's chances of getting off scot-free are slim to none, IMO.

If she's indeed found guilty at trial, Eddy will probably be sentenced much more harshly than Shoaf (who admitted her crime, expressed remorse, and pleaded guilty). Hoping prosecutors recommend a life sentence for Eddy and Shoaf gets closer to 40 years than 20 years behind bars.

No trial date is yet set for Eddy.

(EDIT: Corrected suspect's first name)

Wondering why they no longer wanted to be friends with her?

This possible motive isn't confirmed by official sources, I threw it together based on local Morgantown talk and social media postings by the victim and the suspects. So, take it for what it's worth - it's just speculation added to the facts provided by LE.

1. You were right about the parents not being involved in their daughters' lives, or trying to be more like cool friends. Their daughters were all over the place, doing whatever they pleased.

2. The girls partied a lot; drugs and alcohol. Skylar's twitter page has a bunch of references to getting high and such.
Skylar's tweets: https://twitter.com/hiighasthe_sky

3. Skylar and Shelia (I've been spelling her name wrong, "l' before "i") were best friends since elementary school.

Rachel and Shelia were in love with each other (though they and their other girl friends all messed around with each other sexually).

Rachel and Shelia felt Skylar was getting in the way, and Rachel may have feared that Skylar would tell Rachel's boyfriend (who was in college and studying to be a lawyer) about her lesbian relationship. Rachel didn't want to lose him (Mikinzy is his name).

4. Rachel and Shelia decided to make Skylar disappear (which is similar to a plot line in their alleged favorite show, "Pretty Little Liars"), so they tricked her in to going out that night, took her to the spot they'd scoped out in advance, and on the count of three, they stabbed her to death (this according to Rachel's confession).

Rachel's tweets after the murder (people at school and around town were already talking about comments that Rachel and Shelia had made about Skylar before she "disappeared"):

The aftermath:
Though some of the girls' friends and people around town knew or strongly suspected what had happened from the get-go, cops didn't take the disappearance seriously and wrote it off as a run-away.

No major investigation, or physical searches, or alerts. Shelia and Rachel lied and put on a big show at flyer distributions, on Facebook (where Shelia was hailed as an angel for her commitment to her missing friend)...for months...til Rachel suffered a nervous breakdown, was admitted into a psych ward and ultimately confessed (that's confirmed).

Skylar's last three tweets are pretty creepy in context.
Thank god I am oblivious to the opinions of others while caught in the blinding splendor of my own cleverness.

They really are eerie to read after the fact. "Who needs enemies when you've got friends like these?" bored out in the ultimate extreme here.

Latest on the Case:
Shelia Eddy finally admitted that that she conspired with Shoaf and participated in the physical killing of Skylar; just days before her murder trial was scheduled to begin.

Prosecutors implied recently that Eddy and Shoaf had a lesbian relationship and wanted Skylar out of the way.

Eddy, 18, pleaded "guilty" yesterday and was sentenced to life in prison, with the possibility of parole in 15 years.

While Rachel Shoaf cooperated with police earlier and pleaded guilty to second degree murder months ago, she is still awaiting sentencing.

Dave and Mary Neese ^, Skylar's parents, had a lot of harsh words for Eddy at her sentencing. She took their daughter away from them and she fooled them into thinking that she was a main advocate in finding Skylar and bringing her abductor/killer to justice. Incredible level of betrayal to process, by someone whom the Neeses had treated as a second daughter for years.

RIP Skylar Neese.

The Final Sentencing

Rachel Shoaf was finally sentenced today. She got 30 years in prison after pleading guilty to second-degree murder and will be eligible for parole in 10 years.

Co-defendant Sheila Eddy was sentenced earlier this year to life in prison with the possibility of parole for first-degree murder. She will be eligible for parole in 15 years.

Shoaf said, "The person that did that was not the real me.... I became scared, caught up in something that I did not want to do."

The prosecution countered that the two girls joked about killing Skylar in science class.

"Rachel Shoaf murdered my daughter in cold blood," said Dave Neese. "She can take her apologies and sit on them."

Judge Russell Clawges ordered Shoaf to serve her sentence in a state prison. For now, she will remain in a juvenile facility and a hearing will be scheduled prior to her 18th birthday to determine where she will serve the remainder of her sentence.

It sucks that both girls could be out of prison at or before their early 30s, but at least they didn't get away with killing their "best friend" scot free. It took authorities quite a while to pin them for it. If Shoaf hadn't confessed and told LE where to find Skylar's remains, it could have been another long-unsolved missing person case.

I hope Mr. and Mrs. Neese find some peace in knowing their daughter's killers are behind bars.

When people do shit like this I want them put away forever, for the rest of their lives no matter how long that is. People who murder in cold blood do not deserve the opportunity to ever be free again. Period.

Dateline profiled this case last night. It was chilling to see the video of Skylar sneaking away and getting into the car with those two girls when I knew what was going to happen. Had I not known the outcome I probably would have believed those murdering bitches.

I can't believe I never heard of this case until a few days ago when I saw it on here... Spent a whole afternoon reading through twitter pages and stories on the case... It just doesn't seem real that these girl could kill their friend simply because they didn't like her anymore... Unreal.

I did smile a bit seeing pictures of those little bitches in their orange jumpsuits and shackles... They arent so cute without all that makeup

Shelia Eddy seems like a sociopath, to me. It made me smile too when her charade finally ended and she had to trade in her trendy clothes for that orange jump suit, tlynne. I think Rachel Shoaf is a piece of shit as well, but thank God she at least had something of a conscience and had that confessional meltdown.

Here's the Dateline video that Duchess referenced. Even knowing most of the case details from press media, it was still almost unbelievable to watch it unfold in the video and painful to hear the Neeses relive their nightmare.

It's a really disturbing case, not only because the murder was so calculated and senseless, but because of how Shelia and Rachel acted after killing their friend and covering their tracks. I hope they never get out of jail. Diabolical little bitches.
