THE TRUMP PRESIDENCY
Earlier this year, Trump agreed to offer a path to citizenship to DACA recipients (Dreamers) and the Democrats agreed to give Trump $25billion for border security in exchange.

That was a very good deal for Trump; the majority of the country supports the Dreamer act and does not agree that a great big beautiful wall is needed all across our borders.

The Democrats had little power in Congress at that time.  But, Trump got an earful from the hard right........and walked away from that gift.

Week before last, after the Democrats won the House bigly in the 2018 midterms, Chuck and Nancy told Trump they'd agree to between $1.3 and $1.6 billion more dollars for border security to keep the government open til February, when the new Congress will have had some time to negotiate on border security, immigration reform, etc.

That was a reasonable offer, in my opinion -- the government sill hasn't spent the $1.6 billion for border security which was awarded in the last funding bill.

However, Trump told Chuck Schumer over and over that he wouldn't accept anything less than than the $5 billion he demanded and proclaimed repeatedly that he would proudly own a government shutdown if he didn't get it.

That put the Republican congresspersons in a very tricky position.  Several of them do not support funding The Wall.  And, none of them wanted the party to own yet another shutdown.

So, Republican reps met with the President and explained the reality of the situation, after which Trump agreed to accept $1.3 billion in border security funding..........a deal which was  agreed to by all Republicans, all Democrats, and all Independents in Congress.  Yet another government shutdown would therefore be avoided.

But...........Trump again welched on his agreement after right-wing talking heads Ann Coulter, Rush Limbaugh, Laura Ingraham and the House Freedom Caucus expressed their outrage at the news; they were aghast that the President wasn't doing whatever necessary to get funding for The Wall before the Dems take over the House in early January.

And, of course, Trump and McConnell are blaming the Democrats for the shutdown, despite Trump's previous insistence that he owned it and wouldn't blame the Dems, and despite the fact that the $5 billion demand couldn't even get 50 votes in the Republican-majority Senate.

Senator Rand Paul, who supports Trump's troop withdrawal, is among those who voted 'no' on the $5 billion -- he will not support that funding when the government is now trillions of dollars in debt.

Where things stand now:

Senate leader McConnell refuses to further try to negotiate with Trump or take another vote on the Senate floor until Trump tells him exactly what he will accept.  McConnell passed the buck to Senate Democratic Minority Leader Schumer to negotiate with Trump.

From the Senate podium, Schumer reminded Trump that he repeatedly told the American people he owned the government shutdown on live television. Schumer confirmed that Congress will not be giving Trump the $5 billion he demands.

So, the government is shut down and thousands of federal workers and government payment recipients will not get paid unless/until the government is re-opened.

The art of the deal.............

Jesus Christ.

...and it took him two friggin' days to comprehend General Mattis resignation letter. After 2 days of media coverage he finally understood exactly what that letter meant and in a hissy told Mattis he was fired via Twitter.

If it was me I would be outta there at 75 tops. It's not worth it. A person only has one life. But like i said it's an easy job.

Secretary of Defense Mattis did not resign because he wants to go fishing or anything like that Mags. He told us himself why he resigned and the resignation letter is posted upthread.

Mattis resigned because his views on how to treat allies, malign actors, and strategic competitors in a manner that best ensures national security/defense do no align with Trump's views/words/actions.  He resigned on principle.

And, Secretary of Defense for the United States of America is definitely not 'an easy job'.  Overseeing and representing millions of troops and military civilians around the world, managing the relationships with military allies and partners, and developing domestic and international/allied strategies to ensure the national security of the U.S. and the west is far from an easy task (by any objective measure).

Mattis is 4 years younger than Trump, by the way.

See kids, this is the Trump wall, saved the Republic during a difficult time and was a marvel of engineering. Believe it or not it was controversial at the time. Anyone need to use the restroom because after this we hopping on the photon sled, next stop the Great Wall of Taiwan!

Well, those changes you foresee would really put a damper on the ride Biggie.

Unsurprisingly, President Trump, who aides said has been seething about news coverage of Defense Secretary Jim Mattis’s resignation letter, abruptly announced Sunday that he was removing Mattis two months before his planned departure.

Trump is installing Patrick Shanahan as acting defense secretary.

[Image: 220px-Patrick_M._Shanahan_official_portrait.jpg]

Shanahan, a former Boeing executive who has been Mattis’s deputy at the Pentagon, will assume the top job on an acting capacity beginning Jan. 1, Trump said.

The president made the decision hastily in reaction to negative news coverage, according to senior administration officials, one of whom said Trump was eager to retaliate against Mattis and show up the widely respected former general.

Unlike Mattis, Shanahan has not served in the military and has little foreign policy or government experience.

Trump plans to conduct a wide-ranging search for a permanent replacement and is interested in candidates from outside the administration, one official said.

As Duchess said, it took him two days to finally understand Mattis' resignation letter. Someone probably had to make a pop up book for him.

Well Rootilda, being that i:

1) am not an alcoholic
2) do not own a camper truck
3) do not spend all my time online
4) do not spend all my time online arguing politics;

What and how does this relate to me?

You and your fantasies. Did you imagine this guy sexually excited too or just dead? Is it just me you imagine in a state of sexual arousal?

You want to share more of your torrid fantasies? Go ahead. I see you have moved from sexual arousal to death. I imagine necrophilia will be the crossover between the two.

The morphing and report card of the The Wall campaign promise:

1. The Wall will be constructed of concrete slabs and Mexico is gonna pay for it, believe me!
Grade:  F

2.  The Wall will stop drugs from coming into the country (most drugs come over the border with smugglers who cross legally, and the newly depicted fence would allow small drug packages to easily be passed through the slats).
Grade:  D-

4.  The Wall will drastically reduce the number of illegal border crossings.
Grade:  TBD (depends on how many overweight people try to cross illegally).

--Greased up prisoners, children, and Chinese bar patrons have often squeezed through much narrower slats, no problem.

--According to detailed mathematical analysis of Trump's Twitter fence: All and all..............it's just another schtick, not a wall.

Washington Post? That is not the Washington Post that is owned by Jeff Bezos the:
pro-illegal immigration,
Globalism not Nationalism,
Amazon owning,
getting rich from employing many people for low wages and bad conditions therefore a beneficiary of the sweat of illegal immigrants at Amazon;

Washington Post, is it?

You would not be pretending to use them as an unbiased source would you?

Sure you are!

So how ARE Mexico going to pay for the wall and will it be upfront, over time or in installments?

What? You don't know? What did Trump mean at the time? Not sure of that either? Well how the fuck could someone make fact based claims on this, much less grade it? Now on its face, is this honest or dishonest? Biased or non-biased? Is Washington Post credible or Fake News?

Is there ANY point to the next paragraph that some greased up prisoners could possibly slide through the space in the slates? What is it? The barrier won't stop the most determined? Is that really a thing? NO ONE thought a wall would and so no one thinks this will either. No that is not the point. Anyone that needs this explained to is willfully ignorant. A wall CAN be breached, dug under, gone around, flown over, and so on. Well know this.

It will also reduce the number of Central American women getting raped at or near the border, make gun and drug running harder, and take away the ease in which people can cross the border unreasonably.

It is like saying "A concrete wall? Ha! What if they go there with dynamite? Got you good there!"

So this D- is probably a C+ unless you are all for the horrors that come with easy border crossings.

Not to say it will be perfect but if we are arguing over the wall could be better then i agree, Chuck should allocate $26 billion and you'll have a better wall.

I guess the question is why choose such a ridiculously ideologicallt biased article to try to make a point

PS Look up "80% of Central American women" in Google

From the Washington Examiner:

Snip:

From President Trump’s favorite program, FOX & FRIENDS, co-hosts Ainsley Earhardt, Brian Kilmeade, and Steve Doocy....

“People who voted for him and want the wall, went to the polls to vote for that wall, they want to know how he’s going to do this and they want to know why he seems to be softening his stance this morning,” asked Earhardt.

Well, the president did address the wall in a set of tweets, and it was essentially yet more backing down on his signature campaign promise. “[W]e are not building a Concrete Wall, we are building artistically designed steel slats, so that you can easily see through it.”

Don’t you feel better now?

The “wall” is now “steel slats.” The White House last month proudly sent out photos of said steel slats, calling it a wall. I guess those awe-inspiring wall prototypes we saw photographed in San Diego back in March were simply placed in some dump, right next to Trump’s regard for his supporters.

Those walls were nearly indestructible. We know now that they were scrapped in favor of steel slats that look like something you might let your children play safely behind. But the southern border isn’t in a Minnesota suburb.

Trump said on camera last week that he would be “proud” to partially shut down the federal government if he can’t secure $5 billion from Congress for his border wall. He set himself up for failure and with the Dec. 21 deadline to pass a new spending bill approaching, he’s accepting defeat.

Trump blew it, and now he’s not even pretending that he wants to do what he told his supporters he would. If it’s any consolation, at least they all have a new chant for his rallies: “BUILD THE STEEL SLATS!”

Trump’s concession and rhetorical turnaround come after the Hill Democrats used their leverage on the business-first leadership of the GOP — and among Trump’s Hill outreach deputies — to repeatedly block construction of his favored concrete walls.

The comments by ardent Trump supporters below the article must be very concerning to Trump and company.

And, from FOX NEWS:

As the budget standoff has played out, Trump has adjusted the way he refers to his long-promised wall, which was the centerpiece of his 2016 campaign.

"The Democrats, are saying loud and clear that they do not want to build a Concrete Wall - but we are not building a Concrete Wall, we are building artistically designed steel slats, so that you can easily see through it," he tweeted Tuesday.

During a bill signing Friday, Trump went further, saying he didn't care what people called it: "One way or the other we're going to get a wall, we're going to get a barrier, we're going to get anything you want to name it. You can name it anything you want."

He later praised the House for "approving strong border security and the money necessary to take care of the barrier, wall or steel slats," adding, "Whatever you want to call it, it's all the same."

That was a far cry from the campaign, when Trump promised to build a "big, beautiful wall" made of concrete, rebar and steel across the length of the southern border. Back then, he lashed out at the suggestion that what he was proposing had anything in common with mere fencing.

Not to mention the increased cost of steel thanks to the tariffs. Maybe we'll buy the steel from China.
