What's your opinion on sportswriters?
The daily 'beat' writers that hang around a club day to day, interact with players all the time and have to write something every day, are fine.
Usually not controversial and are just giving their readers meaningful news/updates.
Columnists, on the other hand, tend to be pricks more often, usually with some negative spin about someone within the organization who's the root of all evil.
So, I do read the artcles, but still draw my own conclusions.

I have this philosophy where they are concerned, I don't allow myself to believe all their crappy comments about my team so I can't believe in any of the positive comments either. They all suck in one way or another but I particularly don't like the hometown writers. What kind of hometown writers don't write positive articles about their fricken team. Jesus. They are all assholes.

I suppose since I hectored you into starting the thread I have to contribute now. Oh the pressure.
I like sportswriters who have a unique voice or take on things, but I'm very particular. I get to hear a lot of sports radio in my driving daily, both local and national, and I get a lot of sportswriters in that mix. Most local guys kinda suck, they're usually fanboys who spend all their time either raving or bitching about whatever their favorite team just did. National guys, like Jim Rome or JT the Brick, are good for a while but they kind of get hung up on their own personality cult. Wears thin. I frigging HATE the NPR football guy Frank DeFord, that guy is a puffed up a bag of self-important wind as I ever heard. My favorites of the sportswriter/radio personalities seem to be the ex-ESPN glory days crowd, like Dan Patrick and Rich Eisen.
And yeah I know this was a sports writer question, but that's where most of them end up if they're any good. The only pure writer I ever liked for his own sake was a backpager at the Sporting News called the Fly or the Flea or something, used to do a gossip column with all these little innuendos and sly inside jokes. Probably wasn't even a real guy but I flipped to that page every month without fail.

Interesting times in this household: the 19 yr old is a diehard Jaguars fan, I dig the Broncos and the Bills are the local headliners. So I get to follow the fortunes of three teams at different phases of their existences: my team ready to lose tons of talent but grasping at one last chance to make good. They'll be hemorrhaging players this season but Peyton may be back, so the regular season will be interesting at least one more time. I do not think they have a shot at the Superbowl this year though. They simply don't have the depth any more, or won't after free agency. I see Welker gone, Julius Thomas gone, among others, and no guarantee Peyton makes it healthy all the way through. On the plus side they have Elway clearly calling the shots at this point and he is building a dynasty in the offices. That can only be good for the Broncos because that guy hates to lose.
Meanwhile, the Bills have suddenly become a team to watch during the off season. After a couple decades of conservative bland and mediocre teams while they refused to spend Ralph's money and waited for him to die, the Bills went out and got a deep pockets owner in Terry Pagiula, a dynamic passionate coach in Ryan, who immediately began to sign dynamic personalities in key positions. Rumor has Josh McCown and Sanchez as possible QB choices. It may not work to get them to the Superbowl, but it will be entertaining to watch and since that's who gets on tv here that's who I see. On the downside, they do not have a first round draft pick next year, but Ryan always prefers to raid the free agency market anyway.
Finally the Jaguars, it's easy to dismiss them as league laughingstocks, and they are...right now. But Here's what they have going for them: number three pick in the draft, a pretty good position to be in, and they are practically swimming in cap money that they are legally required to spend. In a year with so many good free agents like J Thomas and S'uh, they have potential to make a big leap forward into the talent pool. Besides, I'm old enough to remember the years when both the Patriots and the Seahawks were perennial laughingstocks.

I'm hoping Mark stays in Philly. (Don't throw stones at me, Eagles fans). I don't think we have a better alternative.

Hard to say. If he comes up here the naysayers will bitch that Ryan is trying to build Jets 2.0. But he has more talent than he was able to show with the Jets. I don't have any vested interest in the Bills, I just like to watch a good underdog story and if there's anybody in that position it's the Bills. Besides, can't really get away from them here.

This isn't the first time I've heard someone say that Mark could go up there. I can't help but wonder if he would be eager to join someone that he associates with the worst time in his life. We don't have a viable backup and under no circumstances do I want that handed to that Barkley kid. Nooooo.

True, but I'm not sure Ryan was the reason for him having a bad time as much as just the Jets fans. Downstate are assholes with regard to their sports players. Ryan was always a big Sanchez supporter and butted heads with the GM over player decisions. Remember Timmy Tebow? That was the GM all the way.

Anyway Philly could pick up a solid QB from free agency or the draft. They got a better shot at quality just because they're Philly. Location, location, location. .
