Robert Byrd was in the Klan wasn't he?

I'm familiar with his name but he's way before the time I started paying attention to politics, sorta irrelevant to me anyway given I was raised to know there is no defense in saying someone else did it first.

I had to refresh my memory about the old Byrd.  ')

Byrd joined the KKK in the 1940s and recruited for them in the 1950s before dropping out.  The Klan helped elevate politicians from both parties back then, more Democrats than Republicans.  They had a lot of members and klout, especially in the South (and in West Virginia, Byrd's state).

Byrd spewed some terrible racist bullshit back then, which he later acknowledged, apologized for, and said he deeply regretted.  He denounced the KKK and racism for the remainder of his 50+ years in Congress and got a A+ rating from the NAACP based on all the legislation he drafted and/or supported in promotion of civil rights.

Hillary Clinton worked to get Byrd's support in the 2008 presidential primaries, however Byrd ultimately endorsed Obama (though he noted it was a difficult decision as he admired both candidates).

Byrd's work in the House of Representative was praised both by Democrats and Republicans and he had friends from both sides of the aisle for years.

In my opinion, comparing cozying up to someone who helped pass civil rights for years after having been a racist in his youth to someone who has a present day endorsement from the KKK and other racist groups is a false partisan equivalency.

I think it was FOX's Tucker Carlson's Daily Caller site that started the comparison.  That's the same site which claimed last week that China had hacked Hillary Clinton's emails, an unsourced story which President Trump quickly tweeted without substantiation (forcing the FBI to make a public statement confirming there was no evidence anyone penetrated Clinton's email/server).

RE: THE TRUMP PRESIDENCY - Fry Guy - 09-09-2018

I think it is false equivalence too. Possibly for different reasons.

I have no idea what music, what art or what political party charles Manson, Ted Bundy or Jeffrey Dahmer found favour in and if i knew i would not be as dishonest or disingenuous to think their evil acts had ANYTHING to do with nor were to be ASSOCIATED with these people or acts.

IF it IS that everyone in the KKK aligns with the Republican party (they don't a KKK degenerate who i think held the same rank as Byrd, called Quigg, said they were backing Hillary) this does not mean that the Republican Party endorse or support them.

It may well mean that if there is a party that that seems fall over themselves to panderer exclusively to minorities and all but pathologises both white people and males, and another that seems not to favor amy race or minority status over anyone else nor base any policies around this, then a group that hates minorities is more likely, given the two alternatives to favour the latter party.

This has NOTHING to do with the Republican party playing to that base nor endorsing them.

Compare this to which party founded the Klan or in fact how many Democrats held slaves and hpw many Republicans did. The KKK is entirely founded by the Democrats. The reason Byrd was in it, is because he was a Democrats and an old school racist back in the times that ideology combined with the influence of the KKK got you places in the Democratic Party.

He was NOT a teen when he was in the party. He joined as a young man. He was born in 1917 and joined in 1942. How or why you diminish his age and thus his responsibility to teenage years is beyond me. He says he was only there a year and YET raised to his elevated rank, just doesn't gel, nor after having apparently stop paying dues and being disillusioned with the group, that he would be put forward into politics by the KKK Grandmaster.

He sounds like he is doing just what you did with his age and probably for the same reasons.

I would say there are definiately false equivalence.

Hope you enjoyed the mansplaining Smiley_emoticons_smile

RE: THE TRUMP PRESIDENCY - HairOfTheDog - 09-09-2018

Sorry FryGuy, but you're again positioning your reply to my post as a counter-point whilst not contradicting anything I actually said.

To me, 25-years-old is 'youth'.  That's subjective though, so if you don't see it as 'youth', fair enough.  Difference of opinion, not a factual contradiction.

As for the rest of your post, none of it applies to what I've posted. You won't find a single post from me claiming that the Republican party is nothing but racists, labeling Trump a racist, or anything of that nature.

I do believe that Trump's base has the lion's share of people who are prejudiced against 'others' because they are fearful and resentful that whites and Christians are becoming outnumbered by non-whites and non-Christians. And, I do believe that Trump (and Bannon, and Miller) exploits and perpetuates those fears/resentments for political gain rather than working to alleviate them.  That's my very firm opinion based on observation.

This is a fact:  there is a difference between someone from a religious southern state who was taught and believed that gays, and blacks, and unmarried women are less worthy than everyone else, but evolved to disown those beliefs as he/she became more educated, mature, and exposed to others........versus those who came from the same indoctrination but never evolved given the same opportunities.

Another fact:  Donald Trump and his views have been endorsed by the KKK, David Duke, and white nationalist groups.  You can confirm that fact easily with a quick Google search which will yield direct quotes in print, on video, at rallies, etc.  Modern day Democrats, on the other hand, are the enemies of such bigoted groups, which can also be confirmed with a quick search.

However, I never claimed and would not claim that all Republicans are racists and no Democrats are racists.  I don't think that's the case, so I wouldn't say it and I wouldn't post it.

P.S.  Stop yer mainsplainin' man!! Smiley_emoticons_smile

I bet that little fucker doesn't take out the trash or mow the lawn unless threatened with dire circumstances.

Well being that the rallies are always jam-packed and this rally was no exception (little bit bigger than the 750 that Obama managed). By any accounts i have heard, the crowds are enthusiastic and charged up by his "performance"

So no, i do not think he was having a hard time to fill spaces. Expescially give the crowd size was estimated at 15000. I may be wrong. But in this instance it seems a little doubrful

trump can't stop comparing himself to President Obama either.

Did you see that fool yesterday fist pumping the air while on hallowed ground? It looked like he thought he was at another one of his hootenanny klan rallies.

What Klan rallies? NONE of his rallies have been Klan rallies and someone supporting him or being a Conservative does not make them Klan members and it is not a serious charge so why do you keep repeating it?

She is trying to get your hardy domesticated ruminant animal or she is insane, maybe both.

RE: THE TRUMP PRESIDENCY - Maggot - 09-12-2018

I would think Jeremiah Wright would be a bigger and better racist than any clan member. He tends to "seize" and "destroy" any attempt at normalizing racial tensions.

I saw the fist pump as he approached 9 / 11 mourners like he was the headliner at a hootenanny or something.

I like folk music and moonshine, so I'd actually love to attend an authentic hootenanny someday.

No Trump rallies in my future though.  I'm not big on feigning adulation and swallowing bullshit, so I'd probably end up stealing PlaidShirtGuy's thunder in the meme universe.  ')

Let's be real here, FG. Those people are no more Conservative than I am a world class chef.  I intend to keep referring to them as klan rallies because that's exactly how I view them.

What the fuck is wrong with him? This is not normal behavior, not by any stretch of the imagination.

He gave himself high marks for his attention to PR after hurricane Maria. He called it an incredible unsung success and it was underappreciated. Jesus Christ.
