WEST MELBOURNE --

One week after Brevard County Deputy Barbara Pill's life met a tragic end, thousands from across Central Florida and beyond packed a West Melbourne church to remember and celebrate her life and her 30-year career in law enforcement.

Pill was killed in the line of duty March 6. She was 52.

Calvary Church was filled to capacity by Pill's family, friends, fellow deputies and thousands of law enforcement officers from agencies all over Brevard County and elsewhere. Joining them were Brevard County Sheriff Jack Parker, Gov. Rick Scott, Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, state Senate President Mike Haridopolos and mourners from as far south as Miami and as far north as New York.

As motorcycle by motorcycle and cruiser by cruiser rolled along the 9-mile procession route, hundreds of Space Coast citizens lined the streets, carrying flags and paying their own, personal tributes to the brave deputy who gave her life to keep her community safe.

Inmate Richard Franklin and Sgt. Ruben Thomas

News4Jax
LAKE CITY, Fla. -
A Department of Corrections officer was stabbed to death by an inmate Sunday night at a state prison near Lake City.

Ken Tucker, secretary of the Department of Corrections, told Channel 4 Sgt. Rueben Thomas was attacked by an inmate just before 10 p.m. Sunday at the Columbia Correctional Institute annex.

Tucker said Thomas was in one of the wings of a dorm checking on an inmate when a control room officer saw inmate Richard Franklin chase and then stab Thomas several times in the neck with a handmade weapon.

Thomas was taken to Shands-Lakeshore Hospital in Lake City, where he died.

"There will be lots of support for his family," Tucker said. "Chaplains were brought in to help the staff work through this. They lost more than a co-worker, they lost a friend."

Tucker said that a second officer, William Brewer, was trying to lock down inmates when Franklin swung something heavy in a sock, striking Brewer in the eye. Brewer was also taken to a hospital, where he was treated and released.

Franklin, 37, was serving a life sentence on several charges including murder and battery on a law enforcement officer. Tucker said he will be transferred to a maximum security prison and the incident will be investigated by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
WHY WASN'T HE IN A MAX PRISON ALREADY??

Thomas had a young daughter and was engaged to be married.

"A lot of people don't realize how dangerous their jobs are," Tucker said. "Every day they're running behind fences, dealing with inmates such as inmate Franklin who are in there for murder and robbery."

Associated Press

06 April 2012
Austin Texas
A police officer was shot and killed early Friday at a Walmart in Central Texas, and a suspect is in custody, police said.

Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo said the officer was shot in the neck and died at the scene.

The officer was responding to a call about a drunk man inside the store around 2:30 a.m., Acevedo said. The suspect attacked the officer as soon as he arrived at the store and the officer didn't have a chance to even pull out his own weapon.

“The suspect produced a semiautomatic pistol and shot the officer at point blank range,” Acevedo said.

The police chief declined to provide the officer's name, but said he has two daughters, aged 2 and 6 years.

“This was a routine call,” Acevedo said. “What makes our job deadly is that there is no routine call.”

Two Walmart employees tackled and held the suspect and locked down the store until another police officer arrived to arrest him. Acevedo praised their actions, saying they did all they were supposed to do. He said store video captured the entire incident.

If Walmart policy is the same as Walgreen's then these 2 employees will be reprimanded or fired instead receiving the commendations from managemant they deserve.

Lawyers for a Walgreen's pharmacist in Michigan who lost his job after using his own gun to thwart an armed robbery attempt last May released surveillance video Wednesday that documents the event in chilling detail.

Jeremy Hoven, who was hailed as a hero by gun rights activists after the incident, sued the retail giant in federal court for wrongful termination last month. Deerfield-based Walgreen Co. has denied the charge and is contesting the suit in U.S. District Court in Grand Rapids, MI.

RE: *IN THE LINE OF DUTY* OFFICER DOWN - Lady Cop - 04-06-2012

i don't really want to get into it in this thread, but having done loss prevention (before being certified LE) for walmart, K-mart, JC Penny's, Publix, Dillards, etc. i can tell you NO employee by policy can carry a weapon at work. it leaves the store open for huge liability.
the walmart employees in this Austin instance ^ probably should not have tackled an armed man, heroic or not, walmart would be liable if they were hurt or worse. they may well be reprimanded. the Police Chief may praise them, but i bet they are sanctioned by corporate.
walgreens and other retailers have the right to set that policy and the employees are well aware.
when you are on their clock, you are acting as their agent and make them liable.

5 OFFICERS SHOT, 1 DEAD

WMUR
GREENLAND, N.H. -- One officer was killed and four other officers were injured in a shooting in Greenland while serving a search warrant tonight.

One of those injured was Greenland Police Chief Michael Maloney.

Witnesses reported a heavy police presence on Post Road in the area of Breakfast Hill Road at about 6:30 p.m.

There have been no arrests, and the alleged gunman remains barricaded inside the home.

Post Road was closed south of Breakfast Hill Road after the shooting.

Police have told nearby residents to go into their homes and were telling people to avoid the area.

Portsmouth Regional Hospital was on high alert, and vehicles from several departments were arriving at the hospital. Gov. John Lynch was also on his way to the hospital.

Greenland is a small seacoast town of about 3,500 residents, just west of Portsmouth.

RE: *IN THE LINE OF DUTY* OFFICER DOWN - TxninME - 04-13-2012

My brother, who is now deceased, was a Portsmouth police officer, and knew several of these officers, including the chief. It breaks my heart when any police officer is killed, but especially this situation, under these circumstances. And it's close to home. Retiring in less than two weeks, after 26 years of protecting people like the asshole that killed him. My prayers go out to the chief's family and to the other injured officers in their recovery.

Police Chief Michael Maloney was shot and killed while serving a drug-related search warrant with officers from the Attorney General's Drug Task Force shortly after 6:00 p.m. A subject in the home opened fire with a rifle, killing Chief Maloney and wounding four other officers.

The subject barricaded in the house following the shooting. He and a female were found dead several hours later after a SWAT team forced entry into the home.

Chief Maloney has served in law enforcement for 26 years and served with the Greenland Police Department since 2000. He was eight days from retirement.

A man suspected of killing a New Hampshire police chief and wounding four other officers was found dead along with a female acquaintance early Friday, ending an overnight standoff that plunged a small town into fear and grief.

That chief is one of my customers brother in law. He was set to retire soon. I've been on post road many times and its not like the middle of the city but not farmland either. Each house has an acre or two or three.

RE: *IN THE LINE OF DUTY* OFFICER DOWN - Lady Cop - 04-13-2012

The town of 3,500 near the seacoast had just seven police officers including Chief Michael Maloney, 48, who was due to retire in eight days.
7 officers in town, 5 shot! Jesus. 2 released from hospital, 2 in ICU now.

you just don't expect this in a pretty little NH town. i watched it half the night on WMUR, blackout helicopters, SWAT, a robot, it looked like L.A. not N.H.

the shooter was a long-time volunteer fireman. becoming an EMT. got into steroids. and who knows what else. no ID on the female yet.

MODESTO, Calif. -- A sheriff's deputy and another man trying to serve an eviction notice at a Modesto apartment complex were shot dead Thursday morning by a man who holed up and began an 11-hour standoff, surrounded by a battalion of SWAT teams.

At 10 p.m., there were reports of a fire on the second floor of the two-story unit. Firefighters reportedly could not respond because of the danger.

About an hour earlier, a team of four officers, quickly followed by two more, rushed in on the apartment. Loud bangs from concussive devices could be heard from down the street. Officers used loud speakers to communicate with a man they called "Jimmy," asking him to "pick up the phone" and assuring him he would not be harmed.

No one came out.

Earlier in the afternoon, officers broke the windows of the apartment with bean bags, then shot tear gas into the unit.

The standoff began right after the shootings occurred about 11 a.m. Dozens of neighbors were evacuated to a nearby church.

About 6:30 p.m., the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department identified the deputy killed as Robert Paris, 53, a 16-year veteran of the force. The other victim's name was being withheld pending notification of his relatives.

A man who lives nearby the shooting site and did not give his name said the deputy and the man with him apparently were drilling through the lock on the apartment door in the 2100 block of Chrysler Drive when the suspect fired at them from inside.

My best friend is a former longtime coworker/friend of the female. She was in an on/off relationship with this scumbag and as recently as last month they had been "broken up". I have no evidence of course, but everyone I've heard from that knows her insist that this was most definitely a murder-suicide, and that she was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. Mutrie, however...he was a vile human being. I know the female's ID, but as it has not been publicly released, don't know that it is ok to post. Such a sad situation in the area I grew up!

RE: *IN THE LINE OF DUTY* OFFICER DOWN - Lady Cop - 04-14-2012

GREENLAND -- Chief Medical Examiner Thomas Andrew has concluded suspected cop-killer Cullen Mutrie killed his girlfriend before taking his own life.

BERWICK, Maine — Twenty-six-year-old Brittany Tibbetts was worried enough about boyfriend Cullen Mutrie's mental state in the weeks before Thursday's horrific shooting in Greenland, N.H., that she returned to her family's local farm and ended her relationship with him.

However, she returned to Mutrie's side just days before the shooting because she was concerned for his safety, Tibbetts' mother, Donna, said Friday.

"She was worried about his mental state. That's why she went back," Tibbetts said in an interview at the family's dairy farm off Blackberry Hill Road in Berwick. "That's why she went back."

It was a mistake, her mother said, that proved fatal.
the family is shocked by her death.

Tibbetts' cousin, Michael Tibbetts, said he did not know whether his cousin would kill herself over her boyfriend's actions but added it was a possibility. "(If) you're a witness to that, how are you going to live with that the rest of your life?" he said. "That's a hell of a thing to live with."

He said his cousin sent a text message to a friend Thursday night indicating "her life was ending."
