Greenland police chief was shot saving injured officer
NEWMARKET — Greenland Police Chief Michael Maloney was remembered Sunday night for his heroic effort to save fellow officers on the night he was gunned down by Cullen Mutrie.

At a community prayer service to honor Maloney and the four other officers shot outside Mutrie's Greenland home Thursday, Newmarket Police Chief Kevin Cyr said Maloney “ran through gunfire and dragged wounded officers to safety with no concern for his own well-being.”

He paid the ultimate sacrifice, Cyr said, “and I have lost a friend.”

More than 250 people, including about 70 police officers from a dozen local police departments and their families, filled Newmarket Community Church to remember the 48-year-old Maloney, who suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the head.

Newmarket Detective Scott Kukesh, 33, and Rochester Detective Jeremiah Murphy, 34, remain hospitalized with bullet wounds to their chests.

From his hospital bed, Kukesh wrote a letter that Cyr read at the vigil.

In the letter, Kukesh thanked the community for its overwhelming support, the Newmarket officers who have voluntarily stood outside his hospital room since the night of the shooting, and especially Maloney.

“He should be recognized publicly as a hero who ultimately sacrificed his life to save mine and probably other officers on this fateful day,” Kukesh wrote in his letter.

Kukesh continued, “With the constant presence of an officer and friend outside my door, we continue to be reminded of what a special group of people we are lucky to have in our lives.”

Kukesh's prognosis is good. The bullet hit him above his vest, but missed nearly all his vital organs, Cyr said.

Murphy also continues to improve and is now off a breathing tube, he said.

During the prayer service, the Rev. Joshua Gray lit five candles to honor the officers, which also included Dover Detective Gregory Turner, 32, and University of New Hampshire Detective Eric Kulberg, 31. Turner suffered a gunshot wound to the shoulder while Kulberg was shot in the arm. Both were treated and released from the hospital.

Maloney and the officers were shot by Mutrie when they showed up to serve a search warrant in a drug case. Mutrie later shot and killed his estranged girlfriend, Brittany Tibbetts, 26, and then turned the gun on himself inside his home.

When there are funerals of this nature does the massive response to them bring the families any consolation?

RIP Officer Kevin Ambrose

A veteran Springfield police officer brutally gunned down yesterday in the line of duty by an enraged Rikers Island prison guard during a domestic violence call loved his job so much he put off retirement.

Officer Kevin Ambrose “paid the ultimate sacrifice,” Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno said yesterday just hours after the triple-shooting in the city.

Police say Ambrose, a married father of two, was shot and killed by Shawn Bryan, 35, of Hempstead, N.Y.

Bryan came to Springfield to see his 1-year-old daughter, who lives with her mother, Charlene Mitchell, 29, in the Lawton Arms apartment complex in Springfield’s 16 Acres, city police Commissioner William Fitchet said.

Early yesterday Mitchell received a restraining order against Bryan, Fitchet said.

The six-page stay-away order stipulated that Bryan could remove his personal belongings from Mitchell’s home, but he had to surrender his firearm.

Mitchell asked police to accompany her while Bryan collected his belongings.

Ambrose arrived at the complex at 1 p.m. in a one-man patrol car, Fitchet said, and escorted the couple to Mitchell’s third-floor apartment.

Once there, Bryan shoved Mitchell inside, slipped in behind her and shut the door on Ambrose, police said. Bryan then shot at Ambrose through the door, then opened the door and shot Ambrose two more times, leaving the proud new grandfather mortally wounded.

“It was one (shot) after another, bam, bam, bam,” said neighbor Desiree Romero, who lives below Mitchell, and was home listening to music when the shots rang out.

“I opened my doors and there was a lady crying, telling me to call the police,” she said. It was Mitchell’s aunt, who told Romero she had been in the hallway with Ambrose when he was shot.

Meanwhile, police said, Bryan went back into the apartment and shot Mitchell, then fled to his car and shot himself in the chest.

Bryan was dead when officers found him. Ambrose was pronounced dead at Bay State Medical Center, and Mitchell was fighting for her life last night.

The gruesome triple shooting has devastated the city, where the friendly Ambrose, 55, spent more than three decades as a public servant.

Ambrose came on the force as a police cadet in the mid-1970s, and his brother, Martin Ambrose, is a sergeant in the narcotics division.

“He was an officer that everyone loved and looked up to,” Springfield police Sgt. John Delaney said. “A few weeks ago, he told me he opted not to retire, because he loved his job.”

RIP Trooper Aaron Beesley

a Hero
MOUNT OLYMPUS, Utah – A 13-year veteran of the Utah Highway Patrol died Saturday during a rescue on Mount Olympus.

UHP and Unified Police were conducting a search and rescue operation for two teenagers on the Mount Olympus Trail on Saturday afternoon.

UHP Trooper Aaron Beesley, 34, was among the air units conducting that search. Crews were able to bring the teens down, leaving Beesley waiting at the top until they returned.

Crews didn’t see Beelsey when they returned to pick him up. They then located him at the bottom of a 60-foot cliff on his back and unresponsive.

It took rescue crews about 45 minutes to reach Beesley, where he was pronounced dead.

Officials aren’t sure how Beesley fell off the cliff, but suspect that his pack fell down a minor drop and when he went to grab it, he somehow fell off the side of the mountain.

Beesley, a 13-year veteran, had previously worked in Davis, Weber and Box Elder Counties and had most recently been working as the tactical flight officer in helicopters.

“The trooper died while engaged in a heroic effort to save two individuals,” said UPD Sheriff James Winder.

Beesley, a resident of Box Elder County, leaves behind a wife, a 7-year-old and 5-year-old twin boys.

RIP Officer Christopher Reeves

MILLVILLE, N.J. - July 8, 2012 (WPVI) -- A southern New Jersey police officer has died after his cruiser and another vehicle collided early Sunday.

Cumberland County Prosecutor Jennifer Webb-McRae says Millville police officer Christopher Reeves was on duty when the crash occurred around 2:15 a.m.

It happened at the intersection of 3rd and Broad Streets just after 2:00am Sunday Morning.

Webb-McRae declined further comment on the accident, including whether Reeves was responding to a call at the time of the crash, saying only that it was under investigation by her office and the state police.

However, Jim Ryan, a spokesman for the State Policemen's Benevolent Association, said Sunday afternoon that Reeves' patrol car was struck by a driver who was fleeing police. Ryan said another officer in the car with Reeves was critically injured in the accident, but further details were not immediately available.

Witnesses say police were chasing a black SUV down 3rd Street. They say this police cruiser was hit broadside on the driver's side when it came out of Broad Street trying to cut off the SUV.

Officer Christopher Reeves was killed instantly.

"All of a sudden I heard a boom like lightning," said Rebecca. "I just knew somebody died."

A witness captured much of the incident on video, including the driver of the SUV being wheeled into an ambulance. He says other officers pummeled the suspect.

"The cop that was chasing, he broke the window, he sliced his arm up, and he started beating up the kid that was in the car," said Marc Yatzowitz.

Officials say Reeves was a 1991 Millville Senior High School graduate who served in the Marine Corps before joining the Millville force eight years ago. He also had served with the Millville Fire Department.

Reeves' survivors include his wife, Susan, who also is a Millville police officer, and their 2-year-old son.

MILLVILLE, N.J. - July 9, 2012 (WPVI) -- Citizens of Millville and its police department are still reeling after the early morning crash yesterday that killed 8-year veteran Christopher Reeves.

Reeves was killed just after 2:00 a.m. Sunday morning when he and police trainee Jonathan Seidel joined the pursuit of a vehicle that hit another cruiser during an attempted stop.

As Reeves turned left onto 3rd Street from Broad, police say a vehicle driven by Timothy Seidel of Commercial Township plowed into the driver's side of the cruiser.

The crash killed Reeves and seriously injured the other officer and the suspect.

Both trainee Jonathan Seidel and suspect Timothy Seidel, no relation, are being treated at Cooper University Hospital.

Action News has learned Timothy Seidel had applied to become a Millville police officer, but was being rejected because of residency issues.

Colleagues and the community are in shock over the popular officer's death.

His friends called him Superman because he shared the same name as the late movie actor who played that role.

"He was just a great person. He would actually light up people. He would make them laugh, a great person," Captain Matt Rabbai of the Millville Police Department said.

Reeves was the father of a young son, Alex, who turned 2 on Friday and was married to another Millville police officer, Sue Reeves.

"I feel sorry for his wife, she's a good person. I know Sue. They had a child, the child's going to grow up without his dad. Nobody wants that," resident Elvis Colon said.

Patrol officer Nelson Ferrer says he and Chris Reeves were close friends.

"To me he was like a brother and this is breaking me real bad. To be here today is hard, really, really hard. I woke up this morning, I didn't want to be here this morning but I figure I have to do it for Chris," Ferrer said.

"He wasn't just quick to arrest you or anything like that. He was a nice guy. He would go out of his way to try to help you," resident Shane Lattanci said.

A memorial has been set up at the crash scene in honor of what many are calling a funny, kind, model officer.

The PBA set up a fund for Reeves' son. Donations can be sent to Officer Christopher Reeves Fund at P.O. Box 1142, Millville, NJ 08332.

The funeral service for Officer Reeves has been scheduled for Friday.

The memorial is from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Lakeside Middle School in Millville.

Burial at Mount Pleasant Cemetery will follow.

Timothy Seidel, meanwhile, is charged with two counts of aggravated manslaughter, vehicular homicide, and related offenses.

Bail has been set at $500,000.

WCYB
LEE COUNTY, Va.

Investigators are calling it a senseless act; a missing K-9 officer with the Lee County, Virginia Sheriff's Office was found dead. News 5 has been following the story for a couple of days and learned now their main focus is to find who's responsible for killing the black German shepherd.

The dog went missing earlier this week from the back of his handler's patrol car at a county park. The Sheriff's Office says the dog's partner did leave his car unlocked, but he was only gone for three to five minutes. That's a mistake that's not uncommon.

Investigators are asking two questions: how did the county's K-9 Chase get out of his handler's patrol car, and who did it?

One thing is for sure, it was a bold and brazen move. "At first you would consider it a theft, but at this point we've got on our hands a death," said Lieutenant Fred Rouse with the Lee County Sheriff's Office.

Lieutenant Rouse says Chase was found dead in a ditch off of Route 606 by someone driving by. "Things were collected at the scene, we're going to be looking for some trace evidence. Hopefully that will provide some clues or direction in who may be responsible," Rouse said.

As of right now investigators have pinpointed several people that could be responsible for Chase's death. Investigators actually believe the dog's body had been moved. On Monday, just hours after the dog disappeared, animal control officers spotted the body of a well-kept German shepherd at a dump site. But at the time, they didn't know the Sheriff's Office K-9 was missing. "[Moving the dog] is adding to our case. If this was an accident why are you going to the extent to try and cover your tracks," said Lieutenant Rouse.

The dog will be sent for a necropsy to find the cause of death. In the meantime, there is a huge void at the Sheriff's Office since Chase was a sworn Deputy Sheriff and their main focus is to find his killer. "Because it's just senseless, it really is senseless," added Lieutenant Rouse.

News 5 learned the Sheriff's Office will present to prosecutors the case as if the suspect killed a police officer in the line of duty, which is a capital offense.

Once charges are filed, it's up to the Commonwealth Attorney to make a final decision.
