Police Officer
Michael Crain
Riverside Police Department, California
End of Watch: Thursday, February 7, 2013

[Image: police-officer-michael-crain_zps46510c86.jpg][Image: 3334_zps315ac174.jpg]

Police Officer Michael Crain was shot and killed when he and his partner were ambushed as they were stopped at a red light at the intersection of Magnolia Avenue and Arlington Avenue at about 1:30 am. A subject opened fire on their patrol car, fatally wounding Officer Crain and severely wounding his partner.

The officers were ambushed by an ex-Los Angeles Police Department officer who had been fired in 2008. Several days earlier the subject had murdered the daughter, and her fiance, of an LAPD captain who had been involved in the personnel review that led to his firing. The subject then posted an online manifesto admitting to the murders and stated he would seek revenge on other officials involved with his personnel review and dismissal from the department.

Shortly before Officer Crain and his partner were shot, the subject shot and wounded an LAPD officer in Corona who was on a protective detail as a result of the threats made by the subject.

On Tuesday, February 12th, 2013, the subject was located in San Bernardino County by game wardens with the California Department of Fish and Game. After a shootout the subject fled to a nearby cabin and became engaged in a prolonged shootout with members of the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department. Detective Jeremiah MacKay was fatally wounded and another was seriously wounded.

The cabin that the subject fled into became engulfed in flames. When the flames were extinguished a body believed to be that of the subject's was recovered.

Officer Crain was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and had served with the Riverside Police Department for 11 years. He is survived by his wife, son, and daughter

Detective
Jeremiah MacKay
San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department, California
End of Watch: Tuesday, February 12, 2013

Detective Jeremiah MacKay was shot and killed as he and other deputies attempted to apprehend the suspected wanted for murdering Police Officer Michael Crain, of the Riverside Police Department, five days earlier.

After murdering Officer Crain, the subject fled to the Big Bear area of San Bernardino County where he remained at large for several days. On February 12th, the subject broke into a cabin and tied the occupants up before stealing their truck. The victims were able to free themselves and called 911 to report the incident.

A short time later game wardens with the California Department of Fish and Game spotted the truck near the intersection of Glass Road and Highway 38. After a vehicle-to-vehicle shootout the subject fled into the woods and barricaded himself inside a cabin, which was immediately surrounded by law enforcement officers as the SWAT team responded to the area. Hundreds of rounds were exchanged during a prolonged shootout in which Detective MacKay and another deputy were both wounded. Both deputies were flown to Loma Linda University Hospital where Detective MacKay succumbed to his wounds.

The cabin that the subject fled into became engulfed. When the fire was extinguished a body believed to be that of the subject was recovered.

Detective Mackay had served with the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department for 15 years and was assigned to the Yucaipa Station. He is survived by his wife and child.

This is reportedly the first on-the-job killing of a Charlotte County (Florida) officer in 35 years.

May he rest in peace.

Sergeant Mike Wilson was shot and killed while responding to a domestic disturbance call at an apartment complex on Veterans Boulevard in Port Charlotte.

The subject who shot him was found dead a short time later.

Sergeant Wilson had served with the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office for 20 years. He is survived by his wife and three children.

Trooper Paul Butterfield of the Hart post was shot in Mason County on Monday night. Butterfield, who became a trooper in 1999, was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

The suspects have been caught (and, if guilty, will fry - I hope).

RIP Trooper Butterfield.

Story:
Butterfield stopped a vehicle at 6:20 p.m. in Sherman Township and a few minutes later a motorist called 911 to report that a trooper had been shot in the head.

Police later found a vehicle based on information Butterfield had called in before he was shot, and police located two suspects at a gas station in Wellston around 8:30 p.m.

According to WWMT, police exchanged gunfire and one suspect was shot in the leg. A man and woman were taken into custody.

Sherman Township is about 80 miles north of Grand Rapids.

"This senseless incident is a grim reminder that our brave public safety officers put their lives on the line every day when they go to work protecting Michiganders," Michigan gov. Rick Snyder said in a statement. "They are heroes."

RIP Officer Gale Stauffer, Tupelo, Mississippi

Stauffer was a married combat veteran of the Louisiana Army National Guard, and he had served with the Tupelo Mississippi Police Department for eight years. He was shot and killed while responding to a bank robbery in process.

His partner was shot and wounded; police report that he's getting better, slowly, and his condition has been upgraded from critical to serious.

There's was a $152,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the bank robber(s). Police were unsure whether there was one or more suspects involved.

After reviewing bank surveillance video from the robbery of a BancorpSouth bank in Tupelo, authorities were looking for a thin, possibly African-American man with a light complexion, standing between 5-feet-9 and 6-feet tall, according to the Mississippi Department of Public Safety.

Today, police shot and killed a suspect at the Phoenix airport. They believe he is Stauffer's killer (confirmation underway).

All of Toledo is mourning. James Dickman age 31 left behind a wife, 3 yr. old daughter and a 1 month old baby boy. The other firefighter was single.

RE: *IN THE LINE OF DUTY* OFFICER DOWN - RaisingAPrince - 02-03-2014

This has hit Toledo hard. I did read that Stephen Machcinski's family is giving all donations they receive to James Dickman's family. What a great family.

The funeral procession for James Dickman was Thursday and ran from Toledo to Sandusky. (about 60 miles) Every overpass on the 60 mile drive looked like this....

RE: *IN THE LINE OF DUTY* OFFICER DOWN - HairOfTheDog - 02-05-2014

I did read it, OTD.

It's very sad and maddening that the two firefighters lost their lives at the hands of a smarmy building owner.

RIP Robert German, 31 -- Windemere, Florida

A five-year veteran with the Windermere Police Department in Florida, German had just returned to the force after being on "light-duty status" following surgery for an injury he suffered several months ago, Windermere Police Chief David Ogden said.

"All he wanted to do is be a cop," the chief said. "Officer German was a good cop. He was one of the finest police officers that we had in this agency."

German called for support after witnessing reported teen runaways Brandon Goode-18 and Alexandria Hollinghurst -17 (pictured below). The runaways were walking along a street early Saturday. But when backup arrived, German was found lying on the ground, suffering from a gunshot wound -- at which point the responding officers heard two gun shots and found the two teens dead nearby. Officer German was rushed to an Orlando hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Alaskan Troopers shot in the line of duty -- RIP

Patrick Scott Johnson, 45 and Gabriel Rich, 26.

The troopers were shot 7 times from behind by the 19-year-old son (Nathaniel Kangas) of a resistant disorderly man (Arvin Kangas) who had recently pointed a gun at the village safety officer whilst driving around without a license.

Johnson and Rich had flown 130 miles to the village of Tanana (pop 238) to execute the arrest warrant and were struggling with Arvin Kangas when the shooting went down. The village safety officer (Mark Haglin) was with them at the scene and managed to get help without being shot.

[Image: article-2618404-1D88B0B200000578-7_634x365.jpg]
The crime scene

Johnson was a husband and father of three daughters who had worked as a supervisor of a Fairbanks-area narcotics team. He was a veteran trooper who joined the force in 1993. He spent his career in Fairbanks and worked a variety of roles, including patrol trooper, field training officer and as a canine officer, instructor and canine unit supervisor.

Rich was engaged to the mother of his 1-year-old son. He first worked as a patrolman with the North Pole Police Department southeast of Fairbanks before deciding to join the troopers in 2011. With the troopers, he spent most of his career on patrol.

Johnson and Rich had been featured on National Geographic's "Alaskan State Troopers".

The younger Kangas is charged with two counts of first degree murder and one count of assault -- he continues to say he's sorry. He's being held on $2 million bail.

The older Kangas is charged with assault.

Note: Village public safety officers are unarmed, but a bill passed by lawmakers this year would allow for the arming of the officers, who serve as first responders in rural communities that can be located hours or days, depending on the weather, from the nearest state trooper. Seems wise.

A 48-year-old Brentwood, New Hampshire police officer was shot and killed while responding to a domestic call on Monday afternoon.

Officer Steve Arkell responded to a domestic dispute call at 46 Mill Pond Road at 4 p.m. and was fatally shot as he entered the home, Attorney General Joseph Foster said at a press conference held Monday night. A second officer arrived and entered the home but was driven out by gunfire.

A short time later, the house was engulfed in flames. The shooter, Michael Nolan, 47, is believed to have died in the fire or the explosion that followed. The fire has since been extinguished and neighbors were allowed to return to their homes.

RAW VIDEO: House explodes at scene of officer-involved shooting

Brentwood Police Chief Wayne Robinson said Arkell was a part-time officer for about 15 years. He was married and had two daughters in their teens.

"Tonight, I join all Granite Staters in mourning the loss of Brentwood Police Officer Steve Arkell, who died tonight doing his job, protecting this community," said Gov. Maggie Hassan, who lives just a few miles away in neighboring Exeter. "When an officer is killed in the line of duty, it strikes at the very fabric of our society, and I know all Granite Staters join with me tonight in sorrow for the loss of Officer Arkell."

Associate Attorney General Jane Young said additional information will likely be released at a press conference at 1 p.m. on Tuesday.

"State police, the fire marshal, ATF and the FBI will remain here tonight and work on the scene," she said. "This has been a difficult few hours for the Brentwood Police Department and we can't imagine how it's been for the family."

Hassan directed flags to half-staff on Monday night in honor of Arkell.

"It is now the responsibility of all Granite Staters to honor Officer Arkell's sacrifice by coming together and doing everything we can to support those he has left behind," she said. "My thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones, as well as everyone in Brentwood and the surrounding communities affected by this horrific tragedy."

U.S. Sen. Kelly Ayotte, a former New Hampshire Attorney General, issued a statement calling Arkell's death "a senseless and shocking tragedy."

Losing a police officer in the line of duty, she said, "leaves a hole in our hearts that can never be filled, and I pray that Officer Arkell's family, friends and fellow officers will find strength in the difficult days ahead."

U.S. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen said she was "saddened" to learn of Arkell's passing. "Thoughts are with his family & the entire Brentwood community," she said.

U.S. Rep. Carol Shea-Porter said Arkell and his family "are in my prayers tonight."
