When a police dog is shot & killed, is it treated the same as if an officer was shot & killed in terms of charges?

An X-ray of Falco by the coroner’s office showed a single gunshot wound in the face, with the bullet lodged in the abdominal cavity, Dr. Patrick said

Chief Kral declined to comment on the number of gunshots. He said he also could not recall another line-of-duty K-9 death.

Had Marshall survived, he could have faced a third-degree felony for killing a police dog.

Falco did not wear a bulletproof vest at the time of the shooting. Dogs overheat if they constantly wear vests, and in this case it would not have prevented his death, the chief said.

Police responding to an emergency situation are also often unable to properly equip the vest on a K-9 in time, he said.

It's very sad. Falco's handler must be gutted :(

Falco............Crying-into-tissueCrying-into-tissue

I almost feel worse about a police dog getting shot than a human officer. An officer chooses his career. Police dogs are sort of chosen based on their natural abilities/characteristics and then trained to do what they do. And maybe they enjoy it to the sense that any dog enjoys certain activities but they don't have the ability to make that conscious decision--"I might get shot in the face one day doing this stuff...fuck this shit".

RIP, Falco.

NEVADA

Carson City sheriff's deputy ^ Carl Howell was killed early Saturday Morning while responding to a domestic violence call. RIP.

He was a 9 year veteran of the Carson City Sheriff's office. He leaves behind a wife and four small children.

A procession of about ten Carson City Sheriff's cars brought the fallen Deputy from the hospital to the Washoe County Medical Examiner's Office in Reno Saturday morning. One Deputy in the processional told us that he was "a father, a friend, and a good cop."

At 2:18 a.m. yesterday the Carson City Sheriff's Office responded to that call in the 4100 Block of Montez Drive in East Carson City. When officers arrived they found a female with injuries.

Howell went to make contact with the shooter, since identified as 31 year old Jonathan Pope, who appeared to be armed with a firearm. The two exchanged gunfire and both men were struck. Officer Howell was taken to the hospital, Carson-Tahoe Health where he succumbed to his injuries. Pope was pronounced dead on the scene.

Three children between the ages of 8 and 13 were taken out of the home and away from the scene.

As you recall Toledo Ohio had a police dog murdered last week unrelated to this case here.... This is a white trash neighborhood in Toledo having a "memorial to mooch money" to bury a young male shot last week in an alley. The police have been working hard on this case and posted a warrant for the arrest of a suspect they think murdered him and his friend. Look at how these assholes treat the police and dog! and look at the comments for this video. It makes me SICK!

LOUISIANA

RIP Louisiana State Trooper, ^ Steven Vincent. Vincent leaves behind a wife and a 9-year-old son. Vincent also has two brothers -- Keith Vincent is the Chief of Police in Iowa and Terrell Vincent a fellow state trooper.

Officer Vincent stopped to help an apparently stranded motorist yesterday. The motorist shot him in the head.

At a press conference today, Col. Mike Edmonson introduced the good Samaritan who he said wrestled the sawed-off shotgun away from the man accused of shooting the trooper.

"This is a hero," Edmonson said of Robert LeDoux of Iowa. He was the first of four people who stopped to help. LeDoux grabbed the shooter, Kevin Daigle, and "moved him off our trooper," Edmonson said. LeDoux then used Vincent's radio to let police know an officer was down and ask for help. LeDoux did not speak at the news conference. Edmonson shook hands with him and then hugged him.

POS ^ Kevin Daigle (54) wandered into the road and over to Officer Vincent after shooting the trooper.

Dash cam video/audio captured the incident. "You could hear him (Daigle) breathing, telling him, 'You're lucky. You're lucky - you're going to die soon.' That's the words that came out of his mouth," Edmonson said.

Daigle is in the hospital being treated for minor scrapes. He's been charged with first degree murder.

TEXAS

Shannon J. Miles (left) was arrested and charged with yesterday's killing of Darren Goforth (right), 47, a 10-year veteran of the force. RIP Deputy Goforth.

Goforth leaves behind a wife and two children.

The deputy had gone to the Chevron gas station in Cypress, a middle-class to upper middle-class suburban area of Harris County that is unincorporated and located northwest of Houston, after responding to a routine car accident earlier Friday. While he was pumping gas, he was shot multiple times from behind.

Prosecutors on Saturday charged 30-year-old Miles with capital murder.

Sheriff Ron Hickman said the motive for the killing had not been determined but investigators would look at whether Miles, who is black, was motivated by anger over recent killings elsewhere of black men by police that have spawned the "Black Lives Matter" protest movement.

"I think that's something that we have to keep an eye on," Hickman said. "The general climate of that kind of rhetoric can be influential on people to do things like this. We're still searching to find out if that's actually a motive."

There isn't any evidence as to motive yet, though Sheriff Hickman indicates that what he considers anti-police rhetoric by BLM will be investigated as a possibility.

The suspect appeared in court today and new details were revealed.

Deputy Goforth had responded to an accident scene, after which he went to pump gas nearby and then went inside the gas station store.

When he came out, the suspect, Miles, got out of a red truck and shot him from behind. There is reportedly surveillance video and an eye-witness account (though Miles' mom claims he was shopping with her at the time and that he's a good righteous man.)

At today's arraignment, the prosecutor told the court that Miles continued shooting after the deputy was down; 15 times in total.

Miles was denied bond. Texas Governor Greg Abbott has ordered flags lowered to half-staff in honor of Deputy Goforth.

I believe the suspect, Miles, will be sentenced to death if convicted. If one believe in the death penalty, and the state of Texas surely does, Miles is a prime candidate for sure.

A resume posted online suggests that suspected cop-killer Miles ^ attended Prairie View A&M University, the school where Sandra Bland was arrested following a traffic stop and alleged assault on a police officer in July.

[Image: 150721165002-sandra-bland-sister-tapper-...ge-169.jpg]
^ Sandra Bland had expressed fear of the police when she was arrested and three days later she reportedly killed herself in her cell. The Black Lives Matter movement made her an integral figure in its movement; they doubt the suicide story.

It's not known if Bland's death and the shooting of Deputy Goforth are related, but I'm sure that possible connection is being investigated.

ILLINOIS OFFICER DOWN / MANHUNT UNDERWAY

An urgent manhunt is being conducted across northern Illinois for three men suspected of killing Fox Lake police Lt. Charles Joseph Gliniewicz. RIP.

While detectives have told the public to report suspicious activity, those suspects have only been identified as two white men and one black man, making it difficult to know exactly who to look out for.

He was walking toward three men Tuesday morning, radioing dispatch that he was responding to "suspicious activity," then dispatch lost contact with him. The officer sent as backup found Gliniewicz on the ground near a marsh area. He died at the scene and his gun was found nearby.

The shooting touched off an aggressive manhunt. A half-dozen helicopters took off and snipers staked out on rooftops, while SWAT teams in tactical gear scoured 2 square miles, looking for the three suspects.

"We had over 400 police officers out here yesterday. We had over 45 canine units and numerous aircraft," Covelli said, adding that officers would now conduct "saturation patrols" in a wider area. Several school districts in the search area canceled Wednesday classes.

The 52 year-old served as an adviser, mentoring aspiring police officers in the city's Explorer program. "He meant something to this community," one of his trainees Zachary Point said. "He made it a better place; you felt comfortable."

Murders are rare in Fox Lake and according to state police, there haven't been any reported in several years. The community will hold a vigil for their fallen lieutenant Wednesday night at 6 p.m.

It's discouraging that the three suspects haven't been identified and caught after five days. But, I understand that the foliage near the murder scene is intensive and the manhunt has been massive.

The FBI is reportedly heavily involved and helping local authorities analyze surveillance videos of the local streets and intersections, along with at least one from a resident's home security system.

Also, it's been confirmed that police found Lt. Gliniewicz's weapon during a subsequent search of the area on Thursday (he was shot and killed on Tuesday). It's not known (or not been released?) whether it was the murder weapon.

Wednesday night a vigil was held. His wife and sons (pictured above) spoke about the man they loved; he was close to retirement after more than 30 years of duty. Tear-jerking. Lt. Gliniewicz's family has a lot of support from the local community, police officers and people across the country.

I hope the fuckers who killed him are found very soon.

RE: *IN THE LINE OF DUTY* OFFICER DOWN - HairOfTheDog - 09-16-2015

[Image: Fox-Lake-police-appoints-new-leadership-...killed.jpg]

The investigation into Lt. Gliniewicz's death has taken a strange and surprising direction.

The three guys in the surveillance video who met the vague description of the suspects he claimed (via radio) to be pursuing before his death have been identified. They have been cleared.

The coroner has said that police are holding information that he needs before he can make a formal ruling as to the manner of death. The coroner says he can't rule out suicide and he can't rule out accident and he can't rule in homicide.

It seems there's evidence and/or suspicion that Gliniewicz may have committed suicide and staged it to appear as being killed in the line of duty. Or, possibly, he accidentally shot himself that night.

All possibilities are being investigated and the case remains open, with a greatly reduced task force dedicated to it.

The family has not yet been interviewed and are being given time to grieve. They will be questioned soon, according to the Chief of the Major Crimes Task Force.
