Utah

This is such a sad case.

A veteran Utah police officer who was shot to death Sunday was working overtime to pay for his cancer treatments when he encountered a fugitive who went missing from a drug rehab center for parolees, officials said.

Unified police officer Douglas Scott Barney, 44, had been on the force 18 years when police say he encountered Cory Lee Henderson, 31, Sunday morning in a residential area near a church in the suburb of Holladay, about 8 miles southeast of downtown Salt Lake City.

Authorities say the incident began with a car crash involving Henderson and a woman in a BMW. Henderson and the woman walked away from the wreck. Barney found Henderson nearby and the officer was shot in the head. Barney died hours later at a hospital.

Other officers responded and exchanged gunfire with Henderson, who died at the scene (good riddance, asshole). Police said they were still searching for the woman who was with Henderson at the time of the crash.

Officer Jon Richey, 51, was shot once by a bullet that went through both legs. His condition was upgraded Monday to fair after he had emergency surgery.

Barney, a married father of three teenagers, had volunteered to work overtime Sunday to help pay for his medical treatments after surviving bladder cancer. RIP.

Ohio

An Ohio woman called Danville police dispatch late Sunday night and reported her ex-boyfriend as a threat — to her and to cops.

"Yes, I'm in danger," the woman told the 911 operator during the 11:20 p.m. call. "But the cops in Danville are in danger, too. My ex-boyfriend's out in camo looking to kill a cop."

Less than half an hour later, deputies found the body of Officer Thomas Cottrell (pictured, left) behind the police station in the Danville Municipal Building.

Officer Cottrell, 34, was an auxiliary officer in Danville, who mainly worked on the weekends. He was hired by the police department a few months ago. He had three daughters and was engaged to a local school nurse. RIP.

The 911 caller's ex-boyfriend, Herschel Ray Jones III (pictured, right) has a long rap sheet. He was captured shortly after the discovery of Cottrell's body, running from a home. Piece of shit Jones was taken into custody following a short foot chase and murder charges are pending.

The 13-year veteran of the Seaside Police Department was shot and killed in downtown Seaside Friday night, according to Seaside police. Sgt. Jason Goodding, a married father of two school-age daughters. Goodding, 39, graduated from Sherwood High School and Portland State University. RIP.

"He will be sorely missed," said Clatsop County Sheriff Tom Bergin, who added that Goodding was also his neighbor. "He is the kind of guy everyone would have wanted to be their neighbor, their friend and their coworker."

[Image: ferry-phillip-clatsop-county-jail.jpg?w=300&h=200]
^ Phillip Ferry, 55, shot and killed Goodding when Goodding tried to serve a warrant on Ferry (a career criminal with 45 arrests on his record). The incident took place outside the Pig 'N Pancake.

Goodding's partner was injured in the incident. He shot Ferry three times after Ferry shot Goodding. Ferry died on the way to the hospital.

MARYLAND

RIP Senior Deputy Mark Logsdon, left, and Senior Deputy Pat Dailey

Jeremy Evans told reporters that his mother alerted authorities and left the crowded Panera restaurant where the first shooting occurred before a deputy arrived. She had been shot in the neck in 1998, 10 years after divorcing the shooter David Evans - 68, and always believed that her ex was the one who did it.

Jeremy and his mother had been estranged from the shooter for decades when she began seeing him in the area. David Evans was described as an alcoholic vagrant with warrants out for his arrest.

Dailey was the officer who first approached Evans inside a Panera just before noon. When he approached Evans to engage him, Evans pulled a gun and shot Dailey before he could react. Fortunately, none of the restaurant's patrons were hurt.

Dailey, a former Marine, is survived by his girlfriend, two children and his mother. Dailey also served with the Joppa-Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company. He received a Stay of Life award in 2003 for rescuing a driver pinned inside a burning car on Christmas Eve.

Logsdon was the second deputy to respond to the scene, and he was also shot by Evans, who had fled to a car in the parking lot of a senior living apartment center, authorities said. Logsdon was able to return fire before other deputies shot and killed Evans.

Logsdon, who previously served with the U.S. Army, is survived by his wife, three children and his parents. He was honored with a Valor commendation in 2006 for getting a suicidal man to put down a shotgun.

It is believed that Evans shot the deputies because he didn't want to go to jail. Evans had warrants out for his arrest in Harford County and Orange County, Florida, where he was accused of assaulting a police officer.

COLORADO -- 3 OFFICERS SHOT

^ Corporal Nate Carrigan, a 12-year-veteran deputy, was killed while serving a high-risk eviction notice yesterday in Bailey, Colorado. RIP.

^ Martin Wirth, 58, was being evicted from his property in Bailey when the shooting occurred, the Park County Sheriff’s Office says. Wirth was shot dead during the exchange.

Wirth had been vocal about his distrust and hatred of government, banks, and police for years. He was well-know to LE.

From the deck outside of his house, Wirth reportedly shot at deputies who'd come to serve a high-risk eviction notice The deputies followed him into the house where Wirth picked off three of the five with a rifle. (HOTD: I do not understand why the officers followed him inside like that, being that they knew his mindset.)

Along with Corporal Carrigan, Patrol Deputy Kolby Martin, an 11-year-veteran, was shot . He suffered life threatening injuries and is being treated at a local hospital. A third deputy, Captain Mark Hancock, suffered non-life-threatening wounds.

Wirth had killed a man before. When he was 37, he shot a 24-year-old during a drunken argument over a chess match. The jury acquitted Wirth because he claimed the younger man had lunged for his revolver.

Wirth, who had at one time run for the Colorado legislature, had been in a foreclosure battle for several years and protested against the government during Occupy Denver.

VIRGINIA -- OFFICER DOWN; FIRST DAY ON THE JOB

[Image: 31A35FB700000578-0-image-a-43_1456640508622.jpg]
Prince William County Police Officer Ashley Guindon ^ was shot while responding to a domestic disturbance call. She died from her injuries. RIP.

Officer Guindon looked a little like Lynda Carter from Wonder Woman, to me. She was 29. She was sworn in on Friday and started her first shift on Saturday.

Allegedly the suspect, a military serviceman, 'murdered his wife and then ambushed the officers with a rifle as they approached the scene', according to the Officer Down Memorial Page. Two other officers were wounded.

Corey Stewart, chairman of the Prince William County Board of Supervisors, confirmed there was a child in the house during the incident who was not harmed.

RE: *IN THE LINE OF DUTY* OFFICER DOWN - Duchess - 02-28-2016

This is a very sad story. It was all over my morning news. On the police FB page they had just wished her well on her first day as a police officer and it was pretty much followed by word of her death :(

RE: *IN THE LINE OF DUTY* OFFICER DOWN - Love Child - 02-28-2016

This is very sad indeed.

RE: *IN THE LINE OF DUTY* OFFICER DOWN - HairOfTheDog - 02-28-2016

It's extremely sad.

Domestic disturbance scenes are the most dangerous for police officers; I think Lady Cop posted about that sometime back.

The man who shot rookie Ashley Guindon was an army sergeant assigned to the Pentagon. Piece of shit.

[Image: article-3467706-31A78BC500000578-549_636x382.jpg]
^ Ronald Hamilton, 32, (left) is being held without bond accused of shooting dead his wife and 29-year-old Officer Ashley Guindon.

According to an affidavit, Hamilton's wife Crystal, 29, called police begging for help at 5.30pm. By the time Guindon arrived with her field officer Jesse Hempen, 31, and 10-year police veteran David McKeown, 33, Crystal was dead. Hamilton opened fire on the officers.

On Sunday, police chief Stephen Hudson paid tribute to Guindon's work and gave a poignant account of the passion she showed when she interviewed for the job.

Maryland

[Image: 322B444E00000578-0-Jacai_Colson_28_was_k...760873.jpg]
^ Jacai Colson, 28, was shot dead yesterday in a very weird incident.

A gunman began shooting at the PGPD District 3 police station at 7600 Barlowe Road in Landover, Maryland around 4.30pm Sunday.

After officers inside responded, Colson, a four year undercover narcotics officer, was struck (by police cross-fire) and later died at Prince George's Hospital Center. RIP.

Police said there was no immediately apparent motive for the shooting, but they believe the shooter was trying to commit suicide-by-cop while his brothers filmed it going down. Police have the suspects in custody, along with their cell phone videos of the shooting.

[Image: ford-brothers1.jpg?quality=65&strip=all&strip=all]
The family of the suspect Ford brothers ^ say that the shooter, Michael Ford, who was wounded in the attack, has schizophrenia. Ah, brotherly love...

You can pick your nose, but you can't pick your brothers, trust me.

RE: *IN THE LINE OF DUTY* OFFICER DOWN - Love Child - 03-15-2016

Do CHP get included in this thread?
Nathan Taylor (35)
struck by a vehicle while investigating an accident.

He has 3 children and a wife and will be missed by the community who had positive things to say about him. In one story just a couple of weeks ago he had picked up a back country skiier whose trip did not go so well and gave him a ride down the road. The guy wanted to thank him next time he was in town and found out about his passing.
Sad story.

RE: *IN THE LINE OF DUTY* OFFICER DOWN - HairOfTheDog - 03-16-2016

It is another sad story and it definitely fits in this thread, Love Child.

I see he was hit by a female driving a Nissan Pathfinder when she sped up and switched lanes as she approached a collision on I80 on Sunday.

Officer ^ Nathan Taylor died in the line of duty in Rocklin, CA. Beautiful family.

He was with the CHP for 6 years and reportedly got more letters from grateful citizens whom he'd assisted than anyone else.

Sounds like he was a great person and a great public servant.

RIP Nathan Taylor.

RE: *IN THE LINE OF DUTY* OFFICER DOWN - HairOfTheDog - 03-20-2016

UPDATE to post #411: Officer Colson was not shot in crossfire, as originally reported. He was intentionally shot by a fellow officer who mistook him for one of the suspects -- no more or less sad, just setting the record straight.

RE: *IN THE LINE OF DUTY* OFFICER DOWN - HairOfTheDog - 03-20-2016

South Carolina

Officer Allen Lee Jacobs, 28 (above left), was fatally shot when Greenville cops tried to arrest the suspect at a house in the Nicholtown Community on Friday afternoon.

The Greenville officers had been trying to speak with the suspect, 17-year-old Deontea Perry Marckey (above right), when the suspect fled. Jacobs rounded a corner and was hit by multiple gunshots and passed away at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Jacobs was a decorated Iraq war veteran, a father of two and his wife is pregnant, with the third child due in July, the department said in a somber remembrance. He'd been with the department for nearly four years. RIP.

The suspect, identified by police as 17-year-old Deontea Perry Mackey, reportedly called his mother moments before he shot himself to death after he was surrounded by cops. (Initially police said Jacobs was serving a warrant when he was shot, but they walked that back. Jacobs was wearing a body cam, but police say it may not have been turned on or it may have been broken when he was shot.)

Jacobs, the first cop killed in the line of duty in Greenville since 1996, was also struck by a car during a 2014 incident. Darell Johnson ran into Jacobs, breaking the officer's leg, after the cops told him to turn down the music in his car, according to Greenville Online.

RE: *IN THE LINE OF DUTY* OFFICER DOWN - Duchess - 03-20-2016

RIP.

Sorry for all those who cared about him. The thug should have killed himself first.

I think I asked this before but I can't remember if I did or if I simply wondered it to myself. Are the spouses and kids of leo's taken care of financially when one is killed on the job?

RE: *IN THE LINE OF DUTY* OFFICER DOWN - HairOfTheDog - 03-20-2016

In addition to funeral services, pension, and Social Security payments, the surviving spouses and children of officers killed in the line of duty get financial compensation from a number of local, state, and federal sources under the Public Safety Officers' Benefits (PSOB) Program.

In the case of Officer Jacobs, he was also a U.S. military veteran so his survivors will qualify for VA Survivors' benefits. If he was a member of the NRA as well, the NRA will contribute an additional $35k to the $335k paid by PSOB.

In South Carolina, the fallen officer's spouse is exempt from property tax and funding for his/her children is also available.

Here's a breakdown of the various sources of assistance awarded: https://www.odmp.org/benefits/state/south-carolina

RE: *IN THE LINE OF DUTY* OFFICER DOWN - Duchess - 03-20-2016

Thank you!

It's a horror losing someone you love without the added grief of wondering how you're going to survive financially so I'm glad for the family that finances won't be an issue.

RE: *IN THE LINE OF DUTY* OFFICER DOWN - HairOfTheDog - 03-29-2016

Des Moines, Iowa

Two Des Moines police officers have died in the line of duty following a crash along Interstate 80 early Saturday morning. Both had graduated from the police academy in October 2015. A female prisoner being transported from Council Bluffs by the officers and the driver of the second vehicle were also killed in the crash. RIP.

Officer Farrell worked for Polk County Sheriff's Office for years before joining the Des Moines Police Department.

Puente-Morales was an officer in Ottumwa before working for Des Moines police. He was a member of the Iowa National Guard.

A department spokesperson said that both officers were "very well respected and committed to community service" and the fiery crash was perhaps the worst he's seen.

The officers were driving eastbound on the interstate when the vehicle they were traveling in was struck head on by a vehicle traveling the wrong way on the interstate. The 25-year-old male driver has been arrested; he has a criminal record which includes several driving offenses.
