I don't think this can actually be the case but in so many of these stories it always seems like the bad person lives and the good people die.

driver of the second vehicle were also killed in the crash?

I saw that but then at the end of the story it said the driver had been arrested and that he has a criminal record which included driving offenses. I guess now I don't know. Smiley_emoticons_slash

Biggie's right, I stand corrected.

The wrong-way driver who caused the collision with officers in Des Moines died on the scene. I misread an earlier article; sorry about that. Here's more:

Snip:
Benjamin Edward Beary was supposed to be celebrating his 26th birthday Monday.

On Friday night, the Knoxville, Iowa, man told a friend he was going to a West Des Moines bar to watch March Madness.

A few hours later, he was driving his Ford Taurus the wrong way on Interstate 80 when he crashed head-on into a Des Moines police SUV carrying two officers and their prisoner. Beary's vehicle burst into flames, and he died in the collision. The State medical examiner's office used dental records to confirm his identity.

The occupants of the SUV he struck — officers Carlos Puente-Morales and Susan Farrell and their prisoner, Tosha Nicole Hyatt — were all killed.

Trooper Chad P. Dermyer, 37, was participating with about a dozen other troopers in a training exercise at a Richmond, Virgina Greyhound bus station when a brief encounter with gunman James Brown III of Aurora, Illinois quickly turned violent yesterday, police said.

Derymer was a married father of two, a former Marine, and is described as a warm and great person and officer. RIP.

Brown had a long and violent criminal record; too bad he wasn't locked up. His record includes arrests for domestic battery, aggravated battery of a pregnant person, intimidation, dealing heroin near a school or park, cocaine possession, eluding arrest.

Brown was also killed during the shoot out. Family members described him has someone who was always attracted to crime and who praised criminals who engaged in shootings with police. He reportedly hated police and authorities.

Two women also were shot and injured in the shootout; they are expected to survive.

Officer Steven M. Smith was married with two adult children. The 54-year-old was employed by the Columbus Division of Police for 27 years. His personnel file paints the picture of a highly trained officer with an exemplary record. During his career, he worked on the streets as a patrol officer, in the air with the helicopter unit, in the water as part of the dive team and, most recently, as a sniper with SWAT.

Smith was awarded a Blue Star and a Distinguished Service Medal in 2013 when he was shot in the line of duty while trying to apprehend a man who was suspected of killing his girlfriend and a 9-year-old.

On Sunday, Smith was fatally shot while SWAT was trying to arrest a man who'd recently assaulted his ex-wife, attempted to light her house on fire, and was acting erratically at his former workplace. RIP Officer Steven M. Smith.

^ Lincoln Rutledge, 44, is the man who shot and killed Officer Smith. When the SWAT team showed up to arrest him for the previous day's assault and attempted arson, Rutledge began shooting and engaged them in a stand-off that went on for hours. During the stand-off, Officer Smith was hit while in the turret of a SWAT armored vehicle, a shot described as "one in a million". Officer Smith died in the hospital a couple of days later. Rutledge has been denied bail.

RIP Kansas City, Kansas Detective Brad Lancaster, 39. Brad Lancaster was a U.S. Air Force veteran who had served two tours of duty overseas, including one in Kuwait. He had a wife and two daughters.

Lancaster was shot when he responded to a suspicious person call at the racetrack.

The piece of shit who shot fatally Lancaster near the Kansas Speedway fled in the officer's unmarked car, then hijacked a vehicle with two children inside before abandoning it in nearby Basehor, Kansas, leaving those kids unharmed.

Two police officers were shot at separate locations early this morning in Manchester.

There aren't a lot of details available yet, but both officers are reportedly expected to recover.

Local schools are closed and a helicopter and state police were conducting a massive manhunt for a white man with long hair in a trench coat up until a couple of hours ago. A suspect is now reportedly in custody. He is suspected to have robbed a gas station before shooting the officers.

This is good news: the two NH police officers who were shot this morning are both doing well.

Officer Ryan Hardy (left) was shot in the face and shoulder when he approached the shooter, whom he believed might have been involved in a gas station robbery the previous day. Officer O'Connor (right) was shot in the leg by the shooter when O'Connor tried to approach him about 30 minutes later. O'Connor was released from the hospital today.

I was so hoping he'd pull through, but 35-year-old Phoenix Police Officer David Glasser died today. He was shot in the line of duty on Wednesday.

Officer Glasser and five other officers responded to calls from a homeowner that his son was stealing his guns. When the police officers arrived on the scene, they were unaware that the 19-year-old was armed inside a car in the driveway.

The 19-year-old opened fire on the responding officers, hitting officer Glasser. Police returned fire and killed the assailant, Israel Santos-Banos.

Officer Glasser was married with two kids and was a twelve year veteran of the force. RIP.

Jefferson Parish deputy David F. Michel, Jr. was an officer in the Street Crimes Unit and was attempting to initiate a 'pedestrian stop.'

Michel joined JPSO in 2007, and in 2015, he was transferred to the Street Crimes Unit. Witness reported seeing the officer get shot multiple times by a pedestrian.

Jefferson Parish Coroner said at first glance, it appeared deputy Michel was shot three times in the back.

While no suspects have been arrested, several witnesses in the area have been questioned and one suspect was transported to University Medical Center out of a precaution.

Sheriff Fortunato explained that the role of officers in the Street Crimes Unit is to drive around high crime areas and make either pedestrian or vehicle 'stops.'

"The particular objective is to go into these high crime areas and pick and choose who they are going to stop and either alert 911 or take other actions," Fortunato said. "But at his time, we don't have the details about what prompted this stop." (HOTD: sounds like a very risky assignment.)

Officer Michel is described as a cheerful public servant who loved his job. RIP.

Thanks cannongal. Here's some more information about the officers who were murdered as they worked to protect the rights and safety of others. RIP.

Brent Thompson, 43, had recently gotten married. He was a father and grandfather. "We will definitely miss him, and we are also making sure that his family is taken care of," DART Chief Spiller added. Before joining DART, Thompson worked for almost five years at DynCorp International, a private security company based in McLean, Va. And from 2001 to 2004, Thompson was an instructor at the Texas-based Navarro Police Academy, from which he graduated in 1996.

The father of Officer Patrick Zamarripa, 32, told the Washington Post his son survived three tours in Iraq. “He comes (back) to the United States to protect people here, and they take his life.” A GoFundMe page was set up for the slain officer’s family. On it, the poster said that Zamarippa is the father of a 2-year-old girl, Lyncoln, with his wife, Kristy Villasenor.

Officer Michael Krol, 40, was a Michigan native who moved to Dallas in 2007. Krol's mother, Susan Ehlke, told local TV station WXYZ that her son was a very "caring person." “He was living a dream of being a police officer," she said. "(He) Just turned 40 in April. He knew the danger of the job but he never shied away from his duty as a police officer," she added. "He ... wanted to help people."

Sgt. Michael Smith, 55, was a husband and father to two teenage girls. Smith, who grew up near the Louisiana border in Port Arthur, served in the Army seven years before he joined the Dallas Police Department in 1989, police officials told KXAS-TV. Neighbors and members of his church describe Smith as a "salt of the earth" man.

Senior Cpl. Lorne Ahrens, 48, was once with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and grew up in Southern California. “Lorne was a big guy with an even bigger heart,” said sheriff’s Capt. Merrill Ladenheim. Ahrens had a 10-year-old daughter and 8-year-old son with his wife, who is a police detective, the Washington Post reported.

Three of the injured officers were in critical condition undergoing surgery yesterday. I haven't seen an update as to their conditions yet.

It's obscene to me that men fight in Iraq or someplace similar and make it out alive only to come home and be killed.

It's terrible.

And, in this case, they were killed by a piece of shit who'd served in Afghanistan. He had issues and was discharged, but was not mandated to seek help. http://www.cnbc.com/2016/07/09/dallas-sniper-micah-xavier-johnson-was-a-loner-sent-home-from-afghanistan-by-army.html

Anyway, with an average of about 10,000 annually by guns alone, the number of murders in America exceeds the number of fatalities in many wars.

RE: *IN THE LINE OF DUTY* OFFICER DOWN - HairOfTheDog - 07-10-2016

The mass execution of police officers would be terrible no matter where it took place. But, it's particularly frustrating that it happened in Dallas.

By all accounts, the Dallas PD has been one of the leading forces in the country when it comes to partnering with community members, promoting de-escalation policies and training, etc... The Dallas protest march that night had been peaceful, with protesters and police officers working together before and during the event.

[Image: gettyimages-545531520.jpg?quality=85&str...225&crop=1]
Chief David Brown's ^ public statements have been difficult to watch, at times. He's very professional, but his emotions and heartache are not far from the surface.

Chief Brown's partner was killed on-duty back in the 80s. His brother was killed by drug dealers in the 90s. Six years ago, shortly after he became Chief, his teenage son was high on drugs and alcohol when he shot and killed a police officer on Father's Day. Police fatally shot his son 12 times. Now Chief Brown has lost four of his officers.

It's encouraging to see the people of Dallas, including the protesters, rallying around the police department and expressing their love and support.

RE: *IN THE LINE OF DUTY* OFFICER DOWN - HairOfTheDog - 07-10-2016

Aside from the officers from the Dallas Police Department, four Dallas Area Rapid Transit officers were shot by the sniper. One of them, Brent Thompson, was killed.

Three other DART officers were wounded in the attack. The agency has now identified the injured officers as Officer Omar Cannon, 44, who joined the department in July 2009; Officer Misty McBride, 32, who joined DART in March 2010; and Officer Jesus Retana, 39, who joined DART in April 2006.

Fortunately, today's update indicates that all three of the wounded DART officers are expected to recover.
