Jonathan Bun is in custody. with police dog bites instead of bullet holes. (see post #139)

i am waiting for a photo of Deputy Richard “Rick” Jerome Daly.

Authorities arrested a Riverdale teen wanted in the fatal shooting of a Clayton County sheriff’s deputy.

Jonathan Bun, 17, was taken into custody at dusk Wednesday following a massive search that included officers from several dozen jurisdictions, Clayton police spokeswoman Tina Daniel said. Surrounded by law enforcement, Bun was transported by ambulance to Southern Regional Hospital -- the same place where 55-year-old deputy Richard “Rick” Jerome Daly was pronounced dead just hours earlier.

Daly’s death marks the first time a Clayton County law enforcement officer was killed in the line of duty, Sheriff Kem Kimbrough told reporters early Thursday morning.

“We are devastated,” Kimbrough said. “For us to have never lost an officer before this was a phenomenal streak of good luck. And good luck, like everything else, has its time and its limits.”

Outside the hospital, Channel 2 Action News interviewed Joyce Daly, the slain officer's mother.

"He loved his job," Joyce Daly told the station. "He was a Christian, and that’s what is helping me get through all of this. He just wanted to help people."

Daly said she was still in shock over the loss of her son, the oldest of six children.

"He took care of them, he took care of us, he just did everything for us and for me and everything," she said.

Kimbrough said Daly was staunchly devoted to his family.

“Several times we had discussed assignments and opportunities he could’ve taken to advance his career,” he said. “But his first thought was always his family, and we admired him and respected him for that.”

And Daly’s enthusiasm for policing was an influence on his son, who is a Fayette County deputy.

Bun, however, has had a clouded past that authorities hope to sort out through juvenile records.

“There’s a lot of very sketchy information about him at this point,” Kimbrough said. “I’m sure that there will be a picture that develops of him in more detail as time goes on.”

The teen, wanted for an unrelated armed robbery, was pulled over by the 25-year law enforcement veteran around 3 p.m.

Deputies from the sheriff’s fugitive squad were looking to serve an arrest warrant on Bun and spotted him getting into a car near his home near Church Street, Kimbrough said.

From their unmarked car, the fugitive team members followed arrest protocol and called for a patrol car to make a traffic stop.

Daly was one of the deputies in that patrol car.

The three cars – the car Bun was riding in with an acquaintance, the unmarked car, and Daly’s patrol car – all stopped near the intersection of East Fayetteville and Walker roads, just west of Riverdale Road.

When Daly approached the passenger side of the car where Bun was seated, “Mr. Bun allegedly stepped out of the passenger’s side and began firing his weapon, striking Deputy Daly,” Kimbrough said.

Although Daly was wearing a ballistic vest, one bullet hit his shoulder and another, authorities believe the fatal blow, pierced his abdomen just below the body armor, severing Daly’s aorta, authorities said.

Bun allegedly ran from the car, disappearing into a nearby tree line as Daly’s fellow deputies fired at the fleeing teen.

Kimbrough said deputies quickly surrounded the large wooded area and an alert went out for law enforcement officials to look out for Bun.

Over the next several hours, law enforcement officers from local, state and federal agencies across the area poured into Clayton County to help establish a perimeter around the wooded area where Bun was hiding, Kimbrough said.

“Believe it or not, old-fashioned police work helped,” he said. “Once units arrived, they established a perimeter so he could not leave. And as more units arrived, they did a sweep of the area … all the tactical units walked through the woods and walked right to him.”

Bun sustained biting injuries to his head and neck from a police dog during the capture, authorities said.

“He was actively hiding and attempting to elude law enforcement,” Kimbrough said, citing how the teen was bitten.

But Bun’s injuries are not believed serious.
too damn bad. but his criminal career is over. here is the dirtbag:

RIP Hero. the girl survived.

Wyoming
A sheriff's deputy missing since he swam into a swollen eastern Wyoming river to help a struggling girl was hailed as a hero Friday, as the search continued and an official revealed the girl had jumped in the waterway because she was upset with her boyfriend.

Converse County Deputy Bryan Gross, 29, swam into the North Platte River in the town of Douglas to try to help the girl at about 5pm on Thursday, Undersheriff Don Schoenleber said.

Gross went into the high-flowing river from one side while several others swam in from the other, Schoenleber said.

Gross worked as a Douglas police officer for a few years before joining the sheriff's department recently.

Henning said Gross had worked at the police department as a drug officer, handling a trained dog. He added Gross had gotten married within the past month or so to a woman who worked as a receptionist for the city.

Douglas Mayor Bruce Jones said the situation is hitting his town hard.

'Anytime you go into the water like that, it's heroic,' Jones said. 'Of course to him, he's probably just doing his job.'

Searchers on Thursday continued to look for Gross until nightfall, Schoenleber said. Deputies used lights on area bridges to scan the river overnight to keep watch for Gross.

Schoenleber said 30 to 40 people, including some using boats and aircraft including a military helicopter, resumed the search at daybreak on Friday. He said searchers were walking the riverbank, with some using tracking dogs.

RIP Officer James Ryan McCandless ~ only 28 :(

KSFY

S.D.

Rapid City Police say the suspect involved in Tuesday's officer shooting in Rapid City, 22-year-old Daniel Tiger, has died.

Investigators are now trying to figure out what led to the shooting.

28-year-old officer James Ryan McCandless was killed in the shootout.

27-year-old officer Nick Armstrong is in critical condition at Rapid City Regional Hospital, and 39-year-old officer Tim Doyle is in stable condition.

From the police report, it looked like it was going to be a simple traffic stop for the three officers, but unfortunately it ended worse than anyone ever imagined.

The trio of Officers McCandless, Armstrong, and Doyle were approaching a group of four individuals at the intersection Anamosa and Greenbriar Street.

According to the police call this group of four was waiting for a bus but something felt out of the ordinary.

After a short conversation with the officers, one of the suspects pulled out a gun.

Witnesses say one of the officers was struck four or five times in the chest while the other officers took cover.

The suspect refused to surrender and continued to fire his gun wildly into the neighborhood.

"I heard a pop and a bullet came through the window, ricocheted off a chair and landed on the floor, so we came out and saw the officers down in the street." Said witness Karen Gilson.

A stray bullet also found it's way into a neighboring video store, two employees and several customers were inside but no one was hurt.

One of the officers returned fire and when the shooting stopped all three officers and the gunman had been shot.

The mayor of Rapid City says the focus now turns to the families and healing the community.

We had the opportunity to speak with officer McCandless' father James Senior over the phone.

He didn't want to say much only that, "James just loved being a police officer and loved every opportunity he was given."

Right now both McCandless' father and mother are on their way to Rapid City and unfortunately he leaves behind a fiance and had just purchased a new home.

RIP Officer Jeremy Henwood

San Diego August 7, 2011

The gunman who allegedly fatally wounded a police officer over the weekend, left a suicide note before going on a shooting spree, officials have said.

San Diego-based officer Jeremy Henwood was pulling away from traffic lights on Saturday when Dejon Marquee White's car pulled up alongside him and he unloaded his shotgun.

Following the unprovoked attack, police later cornered the armed 23-year-old and killed him. After searching his apartment, they found a two-page suicide note.
Sitting alone in his car the 36-year-old policeman was allegedly attacked by White, and died in hospital yesterday.

Investigators have said that they can determine no motive for the shooting of the police officer.

Mr Henwood, who leaves behind his parents, a brother and a sister, was also a captain in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve and had recently returned from a one-year deployment to Afghanistan.

'Jeremy is a dedicated public servant - he served his country in the military and he served this great city in the San Diego police department,' said police chief William Landsdowne, who led the tributes, yesterday.

'He also believed that he was a protector and he had a responsibility to help others. He was a great asset to the San Diego police department.

'I could tell you that this was a senseless killing - this was an assassination.'

TAMPA --

A stretch of 50th Street in Tampa is being renamed in honor of two fallen police officers.

David Curtis and Jeffrey Kocab were gunned down on June 29, 2010 during a traffic stop along 50th Street near East 21st Avenue.

Now that section will carry their names.

Residents and business owners along the busy corridor say it's a solemn and fitting tribute to the slain officers.

RIP Officer Robert Lasso

FREEMANSBURG, Pa. -- The shooting death of Officer Robert Lasso has sent shock-waves through the tiny borough of Freemansburg and beyond.

Now an accused cop-killer is in custody and officials are still working to piece together exactly what happened Thursday night.

Officer Lasso responded to a report of a verbal disturbance at the Washington street, Freemansburg home of George Hitcho Jr., 46.

Officer Lasso called for back up.

In court documents, Freemansburg Police Chief George Bruneio says when he responded, Lasso was in Hitcho's yard being attacked by two dogs.

Bruneio told investigators he ordered Lasso to shoot the dogs with a taser.

That's when Bruneio says he heard a loud pop, saw Lasso fall to the ground and saw Hitcho holding a shotgun.

Neighbors describe what happened next.

"I heard the shot," said neighbor Jose Casellas. "I heard an argument with somebody there."

"I heard our Chief say drop the gun," said neighbor Chris Spengler. "Then we saw our chief on the phone and we saw EMS coming and police were coming from everywhere and they were telling everybody get in the house."

Officer Robert Lasso was shot and killed while responding to a domestic disturbance call in the small town of Freemansburg on Thursday.

The suspect, 46-year-old George Hicho, Jr., was arraigned on one charge of criminal homicide on Friday and is being held without bail in the Northampton County Prison.

According to court documents, the police chief saw Hitcho's two dogs attacking Lasso, so Lasso pointed a stun gun at them. That's when, authorities say, Hitcho shot Lasso in the head with a shotgun.

FREEMANSBURG, Pa. - August 12, 2011 (WPVI) -- Family and community members were reflecting on their loss Friday, one day after Northampton County police officer was killed in the line of duty.

"I can't begin to say how devastated this family is on the loss of Robert," said father Donald Lasso, a borough councilman and the past chief of the local fire company. He was surrounded by family as they remembered the father of two small children, adding "He was with us such a short time, but changed so many lives."

"He lived for his kids. He loved them so much and now they're not going to have a daddy," said Officer Lasso's mother, Elsie Stem.

RIP Police Officer Evan Burns

PEMISCOT COUNTY, MO (KFVS) -
Authorities in Pemiscot County are investigating a deadly crash just outside of Caruthersville Tuesday morning that has killed an on-duty Caruthersville police officer.

According to Pemiscot County Sheriff Tommy Greenwell, Evan Burns, 28 of Caruthersville, was killed in the crash on Highway 84 about 2 miles northwest of town.

The sheriff says the crash was the ending to a chase involving an assault suspect from O'Fallon, Missouri.

In a release from the sheriff, around 12:30 Tuesday morning Pemiscot County deputies spotted a 2002 Cadillac Escalade SUV going south on I-55 just north of Hayti.

The sheriff's office verified this was the same stolen vehicle from O'Fallon. The suspect was wanted to assault first degree and auto theft.

Sheriff's deputies tried to pull the driver of the Escalade over but the driver did not stop.

The driver of the Escalade left the interstate and went on to Highway 84 going toward Caruthersville.

At this point 2 Caruthersville police officers, Evan Burns and Richard Altice, stopped in separate police cars to set up spike strips.

According to the sheriff the suspect hit Altice's car, injuring the officer, and then rammed his Escalade broadside into Burn's cruiser.

The sheriff says the impact of the crash killed Officer Burns.

Evan Burns had been with the Caruthersville Police Department for 2 years. He was unmarried but is survived by a 1-year-old son.

Officer Burns was also involved in a July incident when he was hit in the eye with a firework while on duty.

The suspect in the chase is now in custody and the sheriff says he expects murder and assault charges to be filed in Pemiscot County today.

EL CAJON, Calif. — Police say the body of a baby girl has been found near a Southern California home where a gunman wounded a police officer before the house burned.

El Cajon police Sgt. Mark Coit said Monday that the girl's body was found in the suspected gunman's truck near the burning home northeast of San Diego. The girl had been shot in the head.

Authorities are trying to determine if the body is that of the 1-year-old daughter of 32-year-old Kevin Collier.

Police suspect Collier shot Officer Jarred Slocum in the head Sunday evening after police responded to a report of a gunman. The 28-year-old officer is in critical but stable condition.

Coit says Collier texted family members Sunday to say he'd killed his daughter and his mother-in-law, who remains missing.

Police believe a body found in the burned house may be Collier's. A search continues.

Sat. morning, she's critical. young Officer, only on the job a year.
Sheriff Judd, who i admire, said it best regarding taking this chickenshit shooter alive: "We don't decide whether to use deadly force. The suspect decides whether we use deadly force.''

AUBURNDALE Florida

A police officer is in critical condition after she was shot in Auburndale Friday night.

Sheriff Grady Judd said law enforcement responded to a call about a domestic disturbance at a home in the Diamond Ridge subdivision shortly after 10 p.m.

A child had called to report that her parents were fighting, but a short while later, Judd said the child's mother called to tell police not to come to the home, because she had taken her daughter and was leaving.

However, Judd said police went to the home anyway to check on the situation.

Officer Stacy Booth was walking up to the house when Judd said the suspect, Michael Wayne Lester, fired a shotgun blast through the door.

Booth was shot in the abdomen and the arm. She made it to a nearby home, where she was able to radio for backup. Booth, 26, has been with the department since April 2010.

Deputies, officers and a SWAT team arrived at the scene and set up a perimeter around the house. The SWAT team fired tear gas into the home, then sent a robot inside the home and found Lester, who was unconscious.

Booth was airlifted to Lakeland Regional Medical Center. Police spokesman Chris Nelson said she is in critical but stable condition.

Lester was taken into custody and transported to a hospital for treatment related to exposure to the gas.

"He had one last chance to make a bad decision,'' Judd said of Lester. "But he made the right decision for his life and he is in custody. We don't decide whether to use deadly force. The suspect decides whether we use deadly force.''

A New Mexico state police officer has been fired after security cameras caught him having sex with a woman on the hood of a car.

The bizarre scene, which was witnessed by a nearby chihuahua, was filmed by a hidden camera set up by Santa Fe New Mexico police to catch vandalism at a nearby property.
Instead, it recorded uniformed officer Bert Lopez with an unidentified woman.

According to The Santa Fe New Mexican, Lopez has 30 days to appeal his dismissal.

Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office, Florida

End of Watch: Saturday, April 25, 2009 age 44
Deputy Burt Lopez and Deputy Skip York were shot and killed while attempting to arrest a domestic violence suspect.

The deputies were following up on a domestic assault report they had taken hours earlier, and located the suspect at a gun club in Crestview. The suspect was in the parking lot standing next to his truck. Deputy Lopez and Deputy York approached the suspect, had a brief conversation with him, and then informed him he was going to be arrested. As the deputies moved to handcuff the him, he became uncooperative and began to resist arrest. Deputy York fired his Taser (conducted energy device) and hit the suspect. The suspect dropped to the ground during the five-second jolt of electricity. When the Taser cycle ended, the suspect immediately drew a concealed handgun and opened fire. Deputy Lopez was able to radio for assistance while he and Deputy York engaged the suspect in a gun battle.

During the exchange of gunfire, Deputy Lopez was mortally wounded. The suspect then climbed in his truck to escape. Deputy York pulled the passenger-side door open and jumped inside in an effort to pull the suspect from the vehicle, but was shot and mortally wounded.

The suspect fled the scene and opened fire at deputies from the Walton County Sheriff's Department during a vehicle pursuit. The suspect's vehicle was rammed by deputies, causing it to flip over near the intersection of U.S. Highway 331 and U.S. 90 in DeFuniak Springs. The suspect exited the truck, and opened fire at the deputies, who returned fire, killing the suspect.

Deputies York and Lopez were airlifted to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola. They succumbed to their injuries later in the day.

Deputy Lopez had served with the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office for six years. He is survived by his wife and children and is buried in Heritage Gardens Cemetery, Niceville, Okaloosa County, Florida.

PENN ACRES, Del. - September 16, 2011 (WPVI) -- Authorities have identified the veteran New Castle County police officer who was killed in the line of duty.

Sgt. Joseph Szczerba, an 18-year veteran of the force, was stabbed to death while responding to a call in the Penn Acres Community near Wilmington early Friday.

It all began just before midnight on Thursday when officers responded to a 9-1-1 call for a disorderly subject in the area of Finny Road. While en route, officers received information that the subject was involved with a theft from a vehicle. The 44-year-old victim saw the theft taking place and confronted the suspect and assaulted him after a brief chase. The victim received minor injuries in the scuffle.

After the confrontation the suspect then fled toward E. Roosevelt Avenue. Police were notified of the man's whereabouts and several patrol officers responded to the area and set up a perimeter.

Sgt. Szczerba responded to the area and spotted a man who matched the suspect's description. He stopped his cruiser at the intersection of Fithian Drive and E. Roosevelt Avenue and approached the subject.

The subject took off down E. Roosevelt Avenue and a foot pursuit ensued. Sgt. Szczerba managed to catch up to the man, a struggle took place, during which Sgt. Szczerba was stabbed and fatally wounded.

Other officers were arriving on scene and they too attempted to take the subject into custody. The suspect continued to resist arrest, but was eventually subdued and handcuffed. However, before the struggle ended, three additional officers sustained minor injuries.
Several officers performed CPR on Sgt. Szczerba before medics arrived. The officer was rushed to Christiana Hospital and pronounced dead soon after.

Later in the morning, it was a somber sight as police escorted the officer's body to the medical examiner's office in Wilmington.

Authorities closed off the streets as the procession came off I-95 at Maryland Avenue. Fellow law enforcement lined up and saluted a man who served the force for nearly two decades.

Rest in Peace Deputy Paugh

By Associated Press, Sunday, October 23
ATLANTA — A National Guardsman who appeared to be drunk and firing gunshots at passing cars shot and killed a sheriff’s deputy, then committed suicide on a Georgia road, authorities said Sunday.

Evidence shows Spc. Christopher Michael Hodges, 26, fired 35 rounds from his M4 semiautomatic rifle, Richmond County Sheriff’s Capt. Scott Gay said. Hodges and Deputy James D. Paugh, 47, were found dead on the side of Bobby Jones Expressway after 1 a.m. Sunday.

Hodges served in the Tennessee National Guard but was on temporary duty at Fort Gordon in eastern Georgia for training, said Buz Yarnell, a spokesman for the military post. Yarnell said he was not aware of any problems with Hodges before the shooting and he would not say if Hodges had previously been deployed in combat.

Sheriff Ronnie Strength told The Augusta Chronicle that Paugh was off duty and on his way home when he saw a suspicious car on the side of the road. He was shot several times when he stopped to check on the car and apparently fired two shots from his service weapon before he was killed.

“He was just checking that car. He pulled over his motorcycle and didn’t even get to put the kickstand down before the suspect began firing on him,” the sheriff said.

An autopsy is scheduled for Monday in Atlanta. Yarnell declined to release more information on Hodges until the investigation is complete.

The sheriff’s department said Paugh had been with the department for 17 years and was an avid motorcycle rider and cook. Gay said Paugh would cook turkey for his fellow deputies during Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Authorities said Hodges had been having some sort of dispute with a female, though it does not appear Paugh knew about that. Gay said authorities took the woman into custody for questioning.

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Glendale police Officer Brad Jones was shot Friday night outside an apartment complex near 75th and Glendale avenues. The 27-year-old husband and father of two was rushed to St. Joseph's Hospital where he died shortly after midnight.

The shooting happened around 9 p.m. and immediately afterward a massive police presence blanketed the area around the apartment complex.

Ryan Heisler, 20, who was on probation for theft, was meeting with his probation officer and Jones. A physical struggle ensued and Jones was shot, according to Officer Tracey Breeden. Heisler then fled in Jones' police cruiser.

Glendale officers pursued the suspect to the 8100 block of West Glendale Avenue, where Heisler abandoned the police cruiser after getting in a single-vehicle collision. After a brief foot chase, Heisler reportedly pointed his weapon at the officers, who then shot the suspect.

Heisler was transported to Banner Good Samaritan Hospital where he remains in critical condition.

Jones was with the Glendale Police Department for four years.

"He had a passion for the work and helping people," the department said in a press release. "He will be deeply missed by every member of our department."

Gov. Jan Brewer released the following statement on Saturday:

"Like all Arizonans, I am shocked and saddened today by the loss of Glendale Police Officer Brad Jones, 26. Officer Jones was the victim of a shooting late Friday while working in the line of duty, and succumbed to his wounds early this morning.

"His death is yet another tragic reminder of the danger that members of state, local and federal law enforcement encounter daily in their noble mission to keep us safe. Ours is a debt of gratitude that cannot be repaid – most especially to Officer Jones, his wife and two young children.

"What we can do on a day as heavy-hearted as this is offer our thanks to all Arizonans who endure the sacrifices of service in our law enforcement, public safety and military professions. Please also join me in saying a prayer for Officer Jones, as well as his family and colleagues with the Glendale Police Department who are in mourning today.

"In honor of Glendale Police Officer Brad Jones, I have ordered that all flags be flown at half-staff until sunset today."

AP
Moore County, NC-- A Moore County deputy with more than 37 years in law enforcement was shot and killed Wednesday as he tried to arrest an Iraqi war veteran with an outstanding arrest warrant for not paying child support, Sheriff Lane Carter said.

Deputy Richard Rhyne, 58, spoke to the suspect before he was killed and was trying to arrest him when the shooting took place around noon outside an abandoned home near Vass.

"Our hearts are awful heavy. It's like losing a family member," Carter said.

Rhyne went to the home after deputies received a trespassing complaint. The deputy found 33-year-old Martin Poynter and his brother and had time to check their names before he was killed. Poynter then turned the same gun on himself and also died, the sheriff said.

The brother witnessed both shootings. Carter said he was not involved in the killing of his deputy and was not arrested.

Poynter didn't have a criminal record, but he was taken into custody for a mental evaluation after being involved in a domestic dispute following his return from military service in Iraq a few years ago, Carter said.

Rhyne started in law enforcement in Pinehurst in 1974 and served as police chief at Foxfire Village for 26 years beginning in 1981. He came to the Moore County Sheriff's Office in 2007, working at the courthouse and as a school resource officer as well as helping with patrol, Cater said.

"He was a wonderful man and a great police officer," the sheriff said. "Whenever you saw Rick, he was always personable and he loved everybody."

Rhyne was the first Moore County deputy ever to be killed in the line of duty.

It seems like more officers are killed east of the Mississippi. We don't say, "Thank you for your service" to them like we do to members of the military even though police officers serve their communities every day. Citizens don't track down their killers like we do when children are harmed, we just leave it up to the other officers. I wonder why that is...

Thank you for your service to your communities.
