When the Red Sox opened their doors for business in a ballpark built on a muddy eight-acre parcel of land in a barren, nondescript section of Boston 100 years ago, they had no idea what their stadium would become.

They had nary a clue that a century later Fenway Park would have evolved into a national landmark, an emerald-coated jewel that has played host to the happiest dreams and many of the worst nightmares of the New England region’s most beloved and complicated franchise.

Some Marathoners slow, walk or sadly drop out under blazing sun

At Heartbreak Hill and beyond, the scorching heat has claimed experienced and novice runners alike in today’s Boston Marathon, where more than 22,000 braved the 80-degree temperatures for their own piece of the 26.2-mile course.

The National Weather Service had expected a high of 88 in Boston, though a breeze off the water stopped the mercury from ever rising past 77 at Logan Airport. Along the race route, however, it consistently reached the mid to upper 80s, forcing many runners to slow their pace, walk or simply opt out.

re: post 502 ^

wow

As many as 15 people remain hospitalized in critical condition today after record-setting heat baked the more than 22,000 who braved yesterday’s Boston Marathon. It appears all will recover, race officials said.

Temperatures rose to 87 degrees at one point in Boston yesterday, prompting a final count of 2,800 runners who sought treatment, including 2,181 along the marathon’s 26.2-mile race route, 400 at American Red Cross tents and 215 others at local hospitals, said Boston Athletic Association officials.

Most cases involved heat stroke. A number of case were for over-hydrating. Chris Troyanos, who directs the BAA medical operation said the most serious case he saw involved a man with a temperature of 108 degrees being treated at the finish area medical tent.

Come run Grandma's Marathon in Duluth, MN. Late June every year. With Lake Superior right beside you, you'll never suffer heat stroke!

One of my favorite players is retiring from the NFL, he played 13 seasons with my beloved Birds & the last 3 as a Bronco. I'm hoping that the Eagles give him a one day contract so that he may retire an Eagle.

I'll miss you B-Dawk, you were a shit ton of fun to watch in action 75

MS, have you ever heard of Chandler Jones? He's a defensive end from Syracuse and that's all I know. I don't follow college ball at all and I'm curious about him. I'm seeing his name a lot on the Eagles site & it appears he might be a prospect.

RE: YAY SPORTS FANS! - Midwest Spy - 04-25-2012

Duchess, I haven't been hearing much about defensive ends, unfortunately.

The Vikings are drafting 3rd tomorrow night, and while they have numerous needs, the one fairly strong point of their team is defensive line.

I'll try to look into that guy for you and see what the consensus is.

So, I don't really 'get into' the draft, but there is a guy who's a guest on our sportstalk radio station here, and he seems to know something about every prospect that exists.

His website is draftnasty.com. Here's an excerpt on your guy Jones. According to this guy Jones is projected to go in the 3rd round.

I'm definitely well rounded. 39

RE: YAY SPORTS FANS! - Duchess - 04-28-2012

Thank you, Jesus! I'm watching the press conference now, he's retiring an Eagle & his number will be retired as well. Happy day!

I know no one cares but me.

LATimes
Former USC and San Diego Chargers football star Junior Seau, 43, was found dead Wednesday of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head at his Oceanside home.

His girlfriend found him dead in his bed, according to law enforcement sources.

Oceanside police didn't immediately have any comment about what was happening at Seau's home but are expected to provide details soon.

Television footage showed police swarming around the home. The San Diego coroner's office could not confirm any information.

In 2010, Seau was involved in an accident in which his sport-utility vehicle went off a beachside cliff. The accident occurred after he was arrested in Oceanside on suspicion of domestic violence.

Seau also played for the Miami Dolphins and the New England Patriots.
