Manhunt Under Way for Sex Offender After N.C. Police Chief's Daughter Found Dead

September 20, 2010

Associated Press

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A North Carolina police chief pleaded Monday for fellow law-enforcement officers nationwide to help find a man accused of killing the chief's daughter, whose body was found in a self-storage unit.

Concord Police Chief Merl Hamilton urged officers across the country to keep a lookout for the man accused of killing his 23-year-old daughter, Valerie. Her body was found over the weekend in Charlotte, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said.

"I want to ask my law enforcement brothers and sisters across the country to help me with this," Hamilton said during an interview on ABC's "Good Morning America." "They took my daughter, guys. Play it right, play it by the rules, but y'all get out there and find this guy for me and when it comes back my way I'll pay you back."

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police offered no new developments early Monday in the search for Harvey. The former Niagara Falls, N.Y., resident was convicted of rape in that state. His North Carolina criminal record includes failing to register as a sex offender and felony breaking-and-entering.

Police said Sunday they believed Harvey was still in the Charlotte area. Harvey was driving a white 1996 Chevrolet Blazer with North Carolina tag ZXE-1756, investigators said.

Multiple media outlets reported that investigators went through Hamilton's apartment and the neighborhood around Thomas Street Tavern several times during the three-day search for the young woman. Detectives interviewed guests at an east Charlotte hotel Saturday evening and Harvey's home in northern Mecklenburg County was searched Saturday, but he wasn't home.

Police would not say what evidence led them to Harvey or to Hamilton's body, which they found at the Mini-Storage Center in the 4500 block of Monroe Road.

Harvey was raised in Niagara Falls and his mother and sister said they believed he was innocent in the slaying, WKBW-TV in Buffalo, N.Y., reported.

Police believe Harvey is the man last seen on surveillance tape leaving a restaurant last week with Valerie Hamilton.

Police won't say how Harvey and the victim knew each other or how the victim died.

one minute ago reports say FBI got this guy in Niagara Falls.

i'd like to know more of the story.

edit to add:
Hamilton's body was found Saturday night in a storage unit in southeast Charlotte, and police obtained a murder warrant for Harvey, who is on probation and has a lengthy criminal record.

Hamilton was seen on video surveillance leaving the Thomas Street Tavern in Plaza Midwood with a man early Wednesday morning. She had not been seen or heard from since leaving the restaurant.

Police have not said what evidence led them to Harvey or to Hamilton's body, which they found at the Mini-Storage Center in the 4500 block of Monroe Road.

Harvey already is awaiting trial on several other charges, including breaking into a motor vehicle in Gaston County and drug and firearm possession in Mecklenburg.

Meanwhile, Valerie Hamilton's family and friends were left to cope with the death.

Robin Varner told "Good Morning America" that she and the victim's other friends are stunned. "We don't understand how anyone could do this to someone so sweet and so kind."

Merl Hamilton told ABC-TV, “She was a good kid. She was a wonderful kid. She lived her life to take care of children. That’s all she wanted to do.

"She was the perfect daughter, and I miss her, and I need justice for her."

have to wait for toxicology.

(CNN) -- Saying they found evidence of drug use, police alleged Tuesday that a registered sex offender failed to get medical attention for the daughter of a North Carolina police chief and concealed her death.

The announcement from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department on Tuesday afternoon was the latest twist in the investigation into the death of Valerie Hamilton, 23.

On Wednesday, Hamilton voluntarily left the Thomas Street Tavern in Charlotte with Michael Neal Harvey, 34, according to the statement.

"Homicide detectives interviewed many witnesses that observed Ms. Hamilton in the presence of the suspect. Homicide detectives found evidence of drug usage," police said. "Witnesses indicate although alive, she appeared to need immediate medical attention. The suspect did not seek professional medical attention for Ms. Hamilton after being prompted by several independent witnesses to do so."

Harvey, who was arrested Monday in Niagara Falls, New York, waived extradition Tuesday and said the case was not a murder. He said Hamilton died of an overdose in her sleep.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – An autopsy has determined the 23-year-old daughter of a North Carolina police chief died from a combination of heroin and cocaine.

Authorities looked for Valerie Hamilton for several days in September after she disappeared from a Charlotte tavern. They found her body in a nearby storage unit.

She was the daughter of Merl Hamilton, police chief of the Charlotte-area city of Concord.

Michael Harvey, a 35-year-old man police say was with Valerie Hamilton the night she was last seen, has been charged with murder.

The Mecklenburg County Medical Examiner released results of Hamilton's autopsy Friday. Pathologists determined the amount of cocaine and heroin found in her body was lethal and noted a needle mark on her right arm.
