great day today. straubs and their family and friends gathered at a restaurant near the courthouse at 9am to wait for news. we were told we'd only have about 10 minutes to get to court once the verdict came in. they live 20 minutes away so they waited last night until after 9pm when the jury was sequestered. when the call came about 10am i've never seen 15-20 people clear out of a restaurant so fast. as we got to the courthouse more kept coming. each of the victim families was limited to 5 seats in the courtroom but only 3 members of the clark family were there and they graciously offered 2 seats. john clark didn't attend and i suspect after yesterday couldn't have handled any morr bad news. the remaining 20 or so straub supporters were taken into an office that court staff hastily arramged for us to view proceedings on closed circuit. unfortunately the audio wouldn't work so we stuck for about 20 minutes trying to read body language or see a reaction. in the outer office behind were a dozen or so people who work in the building. we thought that det. kozak reacted positively but weren't sure. williams never moved but we had no idea if the verdicts had been read yet. we were feeling optimistic but not positive when one of those in the outer office, who are allowed cell phones in the building, yelled to us that the toledo blade website on his phone said GUILTY! we went crazy and so did all the strangers. everybody was bawling like babies. they led us to a conference room where they were to bring the straubs to meet with prosecutors, but before we got there we heard the elevator ding behind us and we all took off in that direction and met the straub family as they emerged. as soon as they saw us, and us them, uncontrolable tears came again as everybody hugged everybody and no one wanted to let go. we finally made our way to the conference room but none of us could stop crying. soon the detectives and prosecutors were heading through the door and the room erupted with applause for our new heroes. each of them were visibly emotional as well, with one veteran, battle-hardened prosecutor unable to speak until he collected himself. the straubs told me later that it meant a lot to them that he had become so invested emotionally. after being briefed on the legal realities of what had just transpired and what was yet to come. jeff straub told me, "i think maybe we'll go home and relax at the pool. haven't done that in a while." i think that was a great idea. rip lisa and johnny. we'll always love you lisa and your mom, dad and sister will never give up on seeking justice for you until everyone involved is held accountable.

p.s. someone asked in an earlier post if those of us mockers inside the courtrooms reporting back here had taken notes. are you fucking kidding me?!? i'm older than dirt's son. theres a weird kind of genetic alzheimers that goes with that. i have to check my driver's license to remember how old i am. so yes...i took notes. pages and pages of notes. have no idea where i left the notebook last, but i'm sure it will turn up eventually. chip off the ol' block.

Thank you so much for such a heart felt post...you had me crying as if
I had been there too. Just to know that the Straubs had a real
moment of happiness and relief after all this sadness and despair.
I hope Mr. Straub had a cocktail with his pool lounging, and that
Mrs. Straub joined him. They damn sure deserved one.
I appreciate all the information you have passed on through this
trial. (and YOL and of course your mom and all the others too).
You going out of your way for us is priceless and appreciated.

Thanks Mustang! Very moving post...I'm very comforted in knowing that Straub's have good friends like you.

Awesome reporting, Mustang. Got emotional reading it. What an ordeal. I wonder if it will play out any further. Perhaps the cops are right, and one day the others will slip up and get nailed by their dna. Or maybe our boy will roll right on over. Tough choice he has.

RE: Johnny S. Clarke & Lisa Straub- young Ohio couple murdered - Pico45 - 07-28-2012

Awesome reporting Mustang. I think that was me that asked if you took notes. Sorry man. Did not mean to make ya feel old. Great day for justice! HUGE win for the Lucas County Prosecutor's office. And I second to whoever asked if the Straub's knew what support they had on here! It just wasn't on here, I have talked several times to people back home. Everyday people of Lucas Cty and their communities have been invested emotionally in this case. Everyone wanted to see justice done with such heinous act. The community wanted this verdict-and more justice when everyone gets charged and convicted for what they did to these two kids!

Again Mockers, thanks so much! I think Johnny and Lisa would be very grateful for the support them and their families received here!

With that said, the sentencing phase should be interesting!

RE: Johnny S. Clarke & Lisa Straub- young Ohio couple murdered - soothsayer - 07-28-2012

Hmm. Would he wait for the inevitable appeal to play out before he started talking, if he were going to talk? Or would they try to convince him to do it by saying he wouldn't have to waste what's left of his youth behind bars, so he should talk sooner rather than later?

RE: Johnny S. Clarke & Lisa Straub- young Ohio couple murdered - Lady Cop - 07-28-2012

Toledo Blade Saturday

Ms. Straub's parents were in the courtroom when the verdicts were read by Judge Dean Mandros. Jeff and Mary Beth Straub maintained their composure while in the courtroom, but tears were shed by family members who gathered afterward in the hallway.

Members of the Clarke family also began crying as the verdicts were read. Clarke's mother, Maytee Vazquez-Clarke, was excluded from the courthouse by a July 17 court order and therefore was not present. His father, John P. Clarke, who testified during both trials, was not present when the jury returned the verdicts.

No family members of Williams appeared to be in the courtroom.

A gag order was issued early in the proceedings prohibiting participants from discussing the case. Jim Verbosky, a Straub family spokesman who fought back tears while hearing the verdicts, said he had comments about both Williams' and Cameo Pettaway's cases, but that the family would wait until the mitigation phase was over.

The verdict was handed down a day after Mr. Pettaway was acquitted of similar charges and was freed from custody.

Citing a lack of sufficient evidence, Lucas County Common Pleas Judge James Bates acquitted Mr. Pettaway of all charges. The decision followed 3 12 days of testimony but before the trial got to the jury deliberation stage.

When reached by phone, Mrs. Vazquez-Clarke, applauded Friday's guilty verdicts but had critical words for Judge Bates.

"Judge Bates failed us. He failed Johnny and Lisa," she said. "What he did [Thursday] is to let a killer out on the street."

Although much of the evidence was similar in both trials, Mrs. Vazquez-Clarke said she believed evidence that could not be introduced in Mr. Pettaway's trial might have made a difference. She referred to jail phone calls between Williams and Mr. Pettaway's brother, Stephen Pettaway, as an example.

"Why do you think the jury would find Samuel Williams guilty if they didn't have evidence beyond a reasonable doubt?" she asked.

Jeff Straub, father of the murdered Lisa Straub, 20, embraces his sister-in-law Karen Verbosky after guilty verdicts were announced against Samuel Williams, 24, in Lucas County Common Pleas Court.
Mrs. Vazquez-Clarke said she will continue to fight for justice for her oldest son and his girlfriend. The conviction of Williams, she said, does not bring her son back but helps in some ways.

"I'm glad this demon is going to fry because if they let him out, too, he will continue to hurt and kill people," she said. "It's just really sad the justice system failed us in Judge Bates' courtroom. They say, and I'm going to tell you right now, the world will be destroyed not by those who do evil but by those who watch them without doing anything about it."

The verdict in Williams' case followed three days of testimony from 27 witnesses, including one for the defense, and the inclusion of more than 130 exhibits.

During closing arguments Thursday, the prosecution and the defense asked the jurors to consider all of the evidence, especially DNA, although each side tried to show how it pointed in different directions.

A mixture of Williams' and Mr. Pettaway's DNA was present on a cigarette butt found inside the Straub home. Their DNA was not on the duct tape used to bind the victims, although male and female DNA was found on the tape.

The DNA evidence was presented at both trials.

Unique to Williams' trial was the testimony of Erik Yingling, who was incarcerated with Williams and testified that Williams admitted details of the crime to him.

Also presented at Williams' trial were conversations recorded from jail phone calls.

In one call, Williams said to Stephen Pettaway, "It was supposed to be you with me but l'il bro had to step up and take your spot." The conversation continued and Williams said, "He didn't do it right, but he did it good enough."

Jail records given to the jury showed that Stephen Pettaway was in custody at the Lucas County jail at the time of the January, 2011, slayings.

Mary Beth Straub was in the courtroom Friday when Samuel Williams was found guilty in the killing of her daughter, Lisa Straub, and Johnny Clarke.
Jurors will return Monday to hear additional testimony and determine whether the aggravating circumstance of the crime outweigh any mitigating factors of Williams' life.

Williams was charged with two death or aggravating specifications for each murder count -- that there were two or more victims and that the deaths occurred during the commission of a felony in which the defendant was the principal offender or the crime was premeditated.

While jurors found Williams guilty of the first specification involving multiple victims, they found him not guilty of the second specification.

Only one specification is needed to proceed to the second phase.

After hearing evidence presented by the defense and state, jurors will decide whether to recommend the death sentence. Ultimately, Judge Mandros will impose the sentence.

While Judge Mandros can accept the recommendation or give a life sentence, he could not sentence Williams to death unless the jury recommends it.

Tell me if I'm wrong, if Judge Bates would have dismissed the case instead, they would have been able to retry Cam if they were able to come up with more evidence showing his involvement (Sam snitching)? If so why didn't he dismiss it. I know that one cig butt is not a lot, but when you add the phone calls. He should have at least left that option.

@LC...Would it have been possible for Judge Bates to have ruled in such a way as to keep the door open for future prosecution? Just seems a little crazy to me that he was acquitted in a way that makes it almost impossible to prosecute. I am also curious as to why his step father is so adamant that he is innocent. Maybe they have just convinced themselves? Practically speaking, the cigarette butt proves he was there. He was never a guest in that home. SW did not take a half cigarette with him. I understand there was doubt because of the way the case was put together etc., BUT he was there!

The picture poor Lisa's mom had broken my heart. Worst pain in the world for a mother/father. I hope they find the rest of these scumbags and lock them right up with Williams. Eventhough, I think they should all die. May they find the others and have complete Justice.

That's what I'm saying. He was there. Sam didn't save a half of a smoke. Yes I believe the judge could have ruled that way. There is a cold case in Fulton County. The judge dismissed because of insufficient evidence. The pros. appealed it and tried him.
