COURTS Retired police officer goes on trial in shooting


More than two years after shots were fired at a Toledo woman by the father of a murder victim, the police lieutenant charged with aiding in the scheme went on trial Monday in Lucas County Common Pleas Court.

Frank Ramirez, 60, of the 5900 block of Tetherwood Drive, is charged with attempted murder, felonious assault, obstructing justice, tampering with evidence, and discharge of a firearm over a highway for allegedly helping John Clarke and Maytee Vazquez-Clarke in their foiled attempt to kill Tiffany Williams.

Brian Deckert, a senior assistant attorney general and special prosecutor assigned to the case, told the jury in his opening statement that Mr. Ramirez helped the Clarkes “hunt” Ms. Williams and others the Clarkes believed were responsible for the murder of their son, Johnny Clarke, in 2011. The younger Clarke and his girlfriend, Lisa Straub, were bound and asphyxiated in Ms. Straub’s parents’ Springfield Township home in what was believed to be a home invasion.

On Dec. 26, 2014, Mr. Deckert said, Mr. Ramirez arranged to have Ms. Williams go to a location on Colburn Avenue in South Toledo and told the Clarkes when and where they could find her. The Clarkes went to the location and John Clarke fired two shots, he said, though neither struck her.

“Frank Ramirez was supposed to enforce the laws of the city of Toledo,” Mr. Deckert said. “He not only broke the law. He actively hampered an investigation, destroyed evidence, and concealed it. These are not the actions of an innocent man.”

John Clarke, 46 of the 400 block of Danberry Street, entered an Alford plea — not admitting guilt — and was found guilty May 23 by Judge Gene Zmuda of felonious assault and a one-year firearm specification. His wife, 45, entered an Alford plea to retaliation and was found guilty.

The Clarkes have not yet been sentenced but agreed to testify at Mr. Ramirez’s trial as part of their plea agreements.

Defense attorney Jon Richardson told jurors that Mr. Ramirez was one of many people the Clarkes recruited to help them in a crusade they dubbed “Justice for Johnny.” While Samuel Williams was convicted of their son’s murder in 2012, a co-defendant was acquitted and the Clarkes were convinced others were involved, Mr. Richardson said.

“Here’s the guy whose friendship they drained for their own purposes, to help them accomplish Justice for Johnny, but now that they’re busted,” Mr. Richardson said, adding both took plea bargains in exchange for their testimony against Mr. Ramirez.

“The man who helped with Justice for Johnny is now the only man on trial,” he said.

Mr. Richardson said the Clarkes were willing to pay any price to continue their crusade to find their son’s killer, and he asserted they did not want to kill Tiffany Williams, but wanted her alive so she could come to court and reveal what she knows about the night of the murder.

I don't believe that. Tiffany had already been to court and told what she knew about the night of the murders. They wanted her dead and Maytee spent years telling her that.

Sweet reading the prosecutor use Maytee's own words. Hehehe.

Slaying victim’s parents recount depths of grief


John Clarke and Maytee Vazquez-Clarke described the despair and desperation they felt — and continue to feel — after their son, Johnny, was murdered and one of two men charged in his death was acquitted.

The couple took the witness stand Thursday in Lucas County Common Pleas Court in the trial of now-retired Toledo police Lt. Frank Ramirez, who is accused helping the Clarkes in their purported scheme to kill a woman they believed was involved in their son’s murder.

“After this happened to my son, I lived in the basement for say three years. I didn’t go out in society,” Clarke said. “I never talked to a psychiatrist or received any help for what I saw.”

My God, look at the size of the nose on that woman.

...and look at John, still not taking responsibility for his fucked up-ness. No one stopped him from getting some mental health help, that's on him and him alone. Do you think his wife suggested he could use someone to talk to? Doubtful, she's too wrapped up in her own self to care about how her husband is doing and according to those around them she berated him daily for not saving their thug son.

I still have no fucks to give about those people. You didn't see Lisa's parents running around doing and saying the kinds of things John and Maytee did, that's because the Straub's have class & dignity, the Clarke's have none, they are nothing more than common white trash who don't conduct themselves in a responsible way. Fuck 'em.

Well, aside from Big John's allegation that Tiffany and her mom robbed Ramirez's house the night before John took a shot at Tiffany, nothing really surprising in his version of events/testimony.

1. The Clarkes were only trying to scare Tiffany, not hurt/kill her.
2. Tiffany is the real criminal.
3. The Clarkes were only trying to get Justice for Johnny in the court system.
4. Frank Ramirez was just a concerned and compassionate cop trying to help the grieving couple.
5. It's not the Clarkes' fault they had to conspire with Ramirez to shoot at Tiffany; they were grief-stricken and the justice system let them down.

No personal responsibility taken and no remorse expressed so far -- typical Clarkes.

Maytee locked herself in the basement for three years, she says. That, to me, is an admission that she neglected her two younger sons when they needed her most so she could obsess and issue threats on Facebook.

How many times did people here at Mock and elsewhere sincerely recommend that the Clarkes seek counseling/help, only to be told to fuck off? Hundreds, I bet.

On the night John Clarke fired a shot at Tiffany Williams on Colburn Street, Toledo police Lt. Frank Ramirez was on the phone with a dispatcher trying to find out what had happened to his friend’s mother, who also lived on Colburn.

The elderly woman, as it would turn out, died of natural causes at her home the same night.

Closing arguments in the Frank Ramirez trial took place today. Jury deliberation is expected to begin tomorrow.

John and Maytee Clarke are scheduled to be sentenced tomorrow morning. I'm very curious to learn how much time each of them receives behind bars.

As part of a plea agreement, Clarke, 46, was found guilty of felonious assault for firing at Ms. Williams, while Vazquez-Clarke, 45, was found guilty of retaliation. Both are to be sentenced at 11 a.m. today 9/7/16 by Judge Zmuda.
