Orlando Sentinel

A young Orlando mother was arrested Wednesday after she repeatedly choked her hospitalized 11-month-old daughter, police said.

Alexis Keanna Felton, 21, is facing six counts of attempted homicide and is being held without bond at the Orange County Jail.

The baby girl was hospitalized for unknown reasons when her mother was caught on video repeatedly grabbing her by the throat, according to Orlando police records.

Felton was seen on video moving the wires that were connected to the child, who was in a crib. Felton looked around, then reached down and choked her daughter. The child can be heard choking, gasping for breath and trying to cry, the report states.

The video showed the girl's legs kicking and straightening in an attempt to get away. When Felton released her grip, the baby began to cry.

Felton choked her daughter five times, each time causing the baby to kick and make choking sounds.

During the sixth attempt the baby lost consciousness.

"The child can again be heard choking and gasping for breath. However, this time the screams [and] gasping sound muffled as if the child's mouth was covered," the report states.

"The child is again seen kicking its legs and this time the child can be seen using its left hand to grab Alexis' left [hand] in attempt to remove the hand from its throat."

Eventually the little girl's body went limp. The medical machines she was connected to began to beep and alerted the nurses.

When the medical staff rushed into the room, Felton told them, "She's having another episode."

Police and workers from the Department of Children and Families responded the hospital. Felton initially denied hurting the child, but later admitted to police that she choked her baby. She told police she was sorry, reports show.

DCF has received one prior complaint involving the child, but the case was cleared, said spokeswoman Carrie Hoeppner.

The girl has been hospitalized repeatedly during her short life for reasons that were not made public.

"These are serious allegations and we are reviewing all of the options," Hoeppner said. "We are considering termination of parental rights."

An emergency custody hearing is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday. Felton was on suicide watch at the jail Thursday afternoon and it's unlikely she will attend if she is still in protective custody.

The baby remains hospitalize and is in protective custody.

Graphic details in this story may be disturbing to readers.

OSAGE COUNTY, Okla. -- More charges and even another arrest could happen in a child torture case.

The Osage County Sheriff's Office is calling it one of the worst cases they have seen.

Laura Thomas, 47, is facing child abuse charges and her husband, 58 year-old Aubrey Stuart Thomas, is facing charges for enabling the abuse.

Laura Thomas is still in custody in the Osage County Jail; her husband Aubrey Thomas is out on bond.

Investigators say the abuse occurred at their home in Sperry.

"It's a terrible thing that something like that can happen not just in a neighborhood like this but anywhere," said neighbor Jim Spears.

"I can't imagine people doing such horrid things," said neighbor Paula Byfield.

"It is - if not the most - probably one of the most heinous crimes we've had in our county," said Undersheriff LouAnn Brown with the Osage County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators say the Thomas' four adopted children, two boys and two girls, were abused for as long as nine years. The children are between 13 and 15 years old.

"Food was an issue, and punishment, was they were only allowed a certain amount of food, the kids have talked about that and if they overstepped that limit then there was punishment," Brown said.

Court documents detail the children were allegedly paddled regularly, forced to eat horse manure, forced to perform sex acts, fed bar soap and cayenne pepper and forced to vomit food and eat it off the floor.

"It's hard because we have families of our own and for people to be able to adopt children and then abuse them like these children have been abused, it's just wrong," Brown said.

According to court documents, the couple had two other foster children who were removed from the home in 2003 by the Department of Human Services after signs of abuse were discovered.

DHS released a statement from their communications director, Sheree Powell, regarding this current investigation.

The horrendous acts of abuse this couple is accused of committing against these children are sickening. Our primary concern is for the well-being of these children and getting them the care and treatment they need.

We are rigorously reviewing this case to find any mistakes made by our agency and others during the years of involvement with this family. We are asking the same questions of our staff about this case that everyone wants to know. If it is determined that employees of this agency did not protect these children as required, we will take appropriate personnel action.

This is absolutely intolerable. It is our mission to protect children and we will take whatever corrective action is needed to ensure this does not happen in the future.

The couple has at least three older biological children. Investigators say one is around 18 years old and still lives in the home.

Those at the home declined to comment.

All four children are in protective custody tonight.

Heather Lerch lived in this Akron-area house with three men; it is believed they were running a meth lab out of it

Tragic details are emerging in the death of a 17-month old boy who was found unresponsive in his crib last month at a suspected meth house.

Police have named the death of Patrick Nicholas Lerch as suspicious.

The toddler was found unresponsive in his crib last month with bruises covering his face; he later died.

His mother, 20-year-old Heather Lerch, has been described as flighty and fickle, caring for her son one day, hating him the next, and putting priorities on her looks rather than her maternal responsibilities.

‘She just really didn’t know how to act in a relationship. Patrick was not a priority,’ Patrick’s paternal grandmother Betty Caskey told the Akron Beacon Journal.

Heather Lerch had moved in with a friend, Kimberly Clark, and her husband – a relative of Lerch's mother – after they took pity on her.

Lerch and Patrick had been living for several months before that at Harvest Home, a homeless shelter specifically for mothers and their children in Akron.

A week before Christmas, Ms Clark said Lerch started bringing a new boyfriend, Randy Legg, to her Barberton home.

‘The whole time they were (at home), they completely ignored that baby,’ Ms Clark told the Journal.

"I fed him, took care of him, and put him in his pajamas for the night.’

That’s when Lerch started spending the night at a house on St. Leger Avenue in the Goodyear Heights neighborhood of Akron.

There was something sinister happening in the middle-class home in the quiet neighborhood, Ms Clark said.

She noted that one morning, Lerch brought Patrick back to her house with a black eye and bad diaper rash.

She also said that ‘his little voice was hoarse.’

When the Barberton police investigated, Lerch said Patrick had simply fallen while at play; no police report was filed.

Leading up to Valentine’s Day, Lerch announced she was going to stay at the St. Leger house – Ms Clark said if she wanted to live there, Lerch was no longer welcome in her home.

She alerted child protective services on February 13 that little Patrick was going to live at the suspected drug house.

According to the Summit County Medical Examiner, Patrick had ‘apparent bruising’ on his face. Lerch said he merely ‘ran and fell often.’

Heather Lerch was arrested on multiple felony charges related to the meth lab, including child endangering and illegal assembly of chemicals.

Three men, Ronald Legg, 22, Randy Legg, 19, and Allen Kostra, 24, were arrested on the same charges.

No one has been charged in connection with Patrick’s death.

So many people don't view their children as the gift they are. This is very sad.

News 9 Oklahoma - Tulsa police have arrested two women for first degree murder after the body of an 19-month-old child was found inside a vehicle during a traffic stop.

Mica Shoate, 22, and Jazmin Williams were booked on a first degree murder complaint in connection to the death of Zemontay Green.

An officer spotted the two women driving very slowly on Lewis Avenue Sunday night. The officer saw the boy lying in the back seat and gave him CPR, but it was too late. The women told police they were headed to the hospital.

The medical examiner's office found the child had been dead for eight to 10 hours.

"Multiple broken ribs, deep, severe contusions, bruising throughout the body, had bruising on the face, both sides of the head, what they call brain bleeds, extensive injuries," said Sergeant Brandon Wycoff, Tulsa Police Department Child Crisis.

"This child was beaten pretty severely."

Police say the women gave them a statement, but the statements were disproven based on cell phone records, witness statements and items of evidence found during search warrants.

The women say they don't know how the baby received his injuries.

Police say the boy's parents live in Arkansas. The two women say he had been staying in Tulsa with them since he was one month old.

"The biological family lives out of state, in Arkansas, both mom and dad's side. These two women have the baby staying with them in an agreed upon location. Mom agreed to let the women watch him. We're trying to verify the timeline if she was coming back to get him," Wycoff said.

Their Facebook pages say they are in a relationship with each other, but makes no mention of raising a little boy and there are no photos.

Police say Zemontay has two siblings living in Tulsa. One is in DHS custody and the other is living with a grandparent

They say DHS had a custody hearing scheduled for this Wednesday, but they were not sure which of the children it was for.

Christopher Scott Ryon, 27 has been charged with aggravated manslaughter of his child in Winter Haven, Florida. He allegedly punched daughter Riley (right) because she wouldn't stop crying. The baby was discovered face down and not breathing on the floor by her mother Kristine Bardell when she returned to the family's apartment complex on her lunch break.
When informed of his daughter's horrific injuries, Ryon initially told police that he may have dropped her on the bed from a height of three inches.
Throughout the interview, he referred to the baby girl as 'it', according to the report.
He later told detectives that he had punched his daughter in the head because she would not stop crying and the noise had stopped him from sleeping.

DAD AND STEP-MOM STARVE 11 YEAR OLD TO DEATH

TEXAS- Jonathan Ramsey, an 11 year old living with Dad Aaron Ramsey and Step Mom Elizabeth Ramsey, died from starvation sometime in August 2011. After Edward Ramsey, Aaron Ramsey's father, made several attempts to communicate with his Grandson he finally called police.

Once the police investigated, Aaron Ramsey confessed to keeping Jonathan locked in his room on "military rations." The fathers reason: Sometime in early 2011, Jonathan punched his wife's pregnant belly causing her to miscarrying triplets. Police have not confirmed if the wife was pregnant.

Aaron and Elizabeth Ramsey are on a 500,000 bond and charged with felony injury to a child.

Jonathan Ramsey is the product of a divorce. His mother, Judy Swanson lives in New Mexico with Ramsey's biological brother, step father and some half siblings. Swanson had not communicated to Johnathan for a while and had no seen Jonathan in more than a year.

She lost touch with son after Aaron Ramsey cut off communication. She didn't contact police but claims she filed court papers.

UPDATE: Police found the boys lifeless body in a sleeping bag in an abandon storm shelter.

I am wondering if this boy was ever in school?

Also according to a news source/blog, Elizabeth Ramseys parents lived across the street and the Ramsey;s had a roomate. No one else has been charged at this time; Texas law requires adults to report child abuse.

RE: Rampant Abuse and Murders of Children - koko - 04-09-2012

My god, the poor kid.

Not that their reasoning/excuse could possibly justify what they did to jonathan, but i have a very hard time believing a punch from that little boy would cause her to miscarry. From the mugshot, bitch looks like she has PLENTY of insulation. I don't buy that story for a second. I can't help but think they just pulled it out of their ass.

Also...im curious why the mother had custody of the biological brother...but not jonathan. Not familiar with how custody during a divorce is decided down there, but it seems odd to me.

RE: Rampant Abuse and Murders of Children - Jezreel - 04-09-2012

Although she is being charged with child endangerment, I don't think this is so cut and dry. There are so many arguments with both pros and cons on co-sleeping. I know a lot of people who do it as some state it can help prevent SIDS.

A mother is facing up to 20 years in jail after her newborn baby died while sleeping in her bed -- the second time she has lost a child in a nearly identical way.
Vanessa Clark was found guilty of child endangerment after prosecutors said she should have learned from her first son's death.
In July 2010 her two month old son Tristan was found dead after sleeping in his parents bed.

Clark, 33, believed her son had died from SIDS, the so called sudden infant death syndrome or cot death.
But she was charged with his death after it was discovered her first son Christian had died in near identical circumstances a year previously.

Clark had said the one month's old death was due to SIDS while sleeping in the same bed as her and husband Mark Clark.
A court in Angelina County, Texas, was told after the death of her first son Clark was warned about the dangers of co-sleeping.
Infants can be suffocated by their parents or by pillows or the folds in bedding.

Prosecutor Dale Summa told the jury Clark, who had posed smiling and happy in a bizarre police mugshot, should have been alert to the dangers.
Summa said the Clarks deliberately placed their son Tristam in danger by taking him into their bed.
She said they had been warned by Child Protection Service workers about the dangers following the death of their first child at her home in Lufkin, Texas.
Summa said by ignoring the advice of officials they had reached the legal threshold of child endangerment in Texas law.
'It may not be illegal to sleep with your child, but it is illegal to put your child in imminent danger,' said Summa.

Summa said the 2009 death of Clarks' son, Christian, was a key fact in determining the recklessness of Clark in relation to Tristan's death in 2010.
Defence lawyer John Reeves has insisted Tristan died from SIDS.
He argued that it wasn't illegal for babies to sleep in their parents bed but the jury found Clark guilty of child endangerment.
'Every ounce of her went into preserving life,' said Reeves.
Clark trembled and wept as the jury delivered the verdict at the Angelina County Courthouse in Texas Wednesday.
She will be sentenced within the next six weeks.
As many as 7,000 babies a year die from SIDS in the US – the biggest single killer of newborns.

ROCKFORD ILL.— A man who ironed a shirt while it was on the back of an 18-month-old girl pleaded guilty Wednesday to aggravated battery to a child and was sentenced to 12 years in prison.

Elliott Moore, 43, of Rockford was sentenced by Judge Rosemary Collins, Winnebago County State’s Attorney Joe Bruscato announced today.

On Feb. 5, 2010, Rockford police officers were sent to Rockford Memorial Hospital to take a report of aggravated battery to a child. Officers learned that the child had a large, open burn mark in the middle of the back.

The child’s mother reported Moore was her live-in care provider 46 who watched her children while she was at school. The mother said on Feb. 4, 2010, she returned home and found Moore standing in the parking lot holding a bag of his clothes, stating he had to go to work. She said he was very agitated and that she knew he did not need to be at work for quite some time.

That evening, the mother indicated her daughter was up all night crying. When she changed the child’s clothing, she noticed a large, open burn on her back, Bruscato said.

During an interview with detectives, Moore said he was watching the child and a sibling and was having difficulty ironing because the child was on his lap. He said that he placed one of his work shirts on the child’s back and ironed. The defendant said the child woke up crying, and he saw that he had burned her back. He said he then put cold water on her back and put the child in a sleeper.
