Personally, smoked duck screams 'Holiday', to me.

RE: HOLIDAY HORS D'OEUVRES - Cracker - 10-19-2011

These aren't fancy, but are fine if it isn't dress up (and Duchess can make them, haha). If it is dressy, go with Tiki's rich people food.

I love cheese balls. I just do. They go good with wine when you get the munchies. haha (If you want fancy, get a goat cheese log and roll in it chopped fresh parsley and dill)

2 (8 ounce) packages cream cheese, softened
1 (1 ounce) package ranch dressing mix
2 12 cups shredded Cheddar cheese
1 12 cups chopped pecans
In a medium size bowl, mash cream cheese. Mix dressing mix and Cheddar cheese into the cream cheese. Shape the mixture into a ball. Roll the ball in the chopped nuts. Refrigerate covered until ready to serve. Serve with nice crackers, or Nabisco Sociables.

Everybody loves the spinach dip recipe on the back of the Knorr Spring Vegetable Soup Mix box. Serve in a sourdough bread bowl or with crudite.

This is a good crudite dip I took to a shower. Chicks love it: http://www.countryliving.com/recipefinder/cucumber-crudite-dip-3397

Bowl of Kalamata olives.

Carmelized Onion and Gruyere Tart: this is the basic recipe w/pics http://www.digginfood.com/2009/11/caramelized-onion-and-gruyere-tart/

Smoked salmon platter.

Baked brie with honey or warmed apricot jam on top (after you bake it) served with sliced apples. (I don't like the rind, so I cut the top off.)

Chicken salad (white meat chicken, mayo, pineapple tidbits, halved grapes, pecans, minced celery) with mini croissant.

I would think of more, but I'm getting hungry. Just make sure you have salty, savory, and sweet and you should be good. Some people will want enough for a meal so they don't have to make dinner when they are drunk. haha

Try a variation with Cashews, a bit of curry and water chestnuts.

Yummy!

(Note to user: This one would be banned from your son's school.)

I'm ashamed to buy curry because I know you are supposed to mix your own. Not like the rednecks would know any better, so I should just do it.

RE: HOLIDAY HORS D'OEUVRES - sally - 10-19-2011

I'm not a picky eater but I hate curry, there is just something about it that my taste buds don't agree with, I'd almost rather eat liver. And when the Thai and Malay people mix it with coconut milk, that's just absolutely disgusting.

It's either short-term loss of long-term memory or she hated each and every damned one of them! Smiley_emoticons_stumm

Put away the shame Cracker. When I am making authentic Indian dishes, I make my own spice mixtures, but I also keep a jar of "curry powder" on hand to add a twist of flavor to things like chicken salad or deviled eggs.

I make a curry mayo as a dip for steamed artichokes that is really yummy.

hah She should just go to Honey Baked Ham. That's about the only ham I like (besides good ol' country ham, hate effen city ham).

Don't get the fake store honey glazed ham, NOT the same.

Did you guys know that TGI Fridays sells hors d'oeuvres (boxed) at the supermarket? What a stroke of luck discovering THAT was!

There are stuffed potato skins, mozzarella sticks, jalapeno poppers, mushroom things.

Look...if I had your abilities I would be delighted to make these things myself but I don't and you can't teach this old dog new tricks...in the kitchen anyway.

Duchess, Please don't go there. A least go to a wholesale club like Sam's or Costco and get something better than what is sold in the supermarket under the TGIF brand.

Or better yet just put out some great cheeses, a nice olive combo, some cured meats, dried fruits (figs, apricots), marinated peppers and/or mushrooms or other veggies along with some nice French bread thinly sliced. And/or buy some prepared hummus, and serve with some lemon wedges, chopped tomato and read onions along with some pita breads cut into quarters.

hah I know how bad that kind of food is for people. I was just looking for a reaction. I wouldn't serve my guests something out of a box from the frozen food section.

RE: HOLIDAY HORS D'OEUVRES - Harvest Moon - 11-30-2011

Whew! That was very scarey!

RE: HOLIDAY HORS D'OEUVRES - Cracker - 11-30-2011

Don't forget the fudge, Duchess, with walnuts and without. I get pissy if I go for Christmas cocktails somewhere and the fuckers don't put out some fudge.

Veggies and dip (I like dill dip and homemade hummus, you use the blender and canned chick peas, so no big deal to make) are first because I am still pretending to eat healthily. Me and the fatties are heading straight for the crudite.

Then I have a few drinks, and I go looking for the savory/salty. Nuts are okay, but cheese balls, sandwich fixings, and Old Fashioned Chex Mix are better (make it yourself, don't be an asshole and buy the bag, NOT THE SAME). Nothing fussy, please, I need to get some food in me before I start pouring it in.

At this point I think I am hilarious! I am laughing and making crude comments and making up shit as I go along. I start looking for the fudge now. I have the munchies and I don't care if the fatties see me eating some fudge. I know those bitches have a batch waiting at home for them. I don't like cookies. Chocolate dipped pretzels and fake white candy bark ARE NOT FUDGE, so let's not even pretend. I don't want to hold a plate anymore and work a fork to eat the fucking cake. Either have pound cake cut into bite-sized pieces (you better make the lemon glaze or I think you are a jerk for putting out dry pound cake when I'm buzzed) or some nice, small pieces of heavenly fudge. Not big pieces or some fake bitch will ask if I want to split one. I don't. Some fresh fruits goes nicely with the sweet. Pineapple, strawberries, and orange wedges. Then I can pretend it is early breakfast and sleep in tomorrow.

Then some coffee, please. Not the flavored creamers, those are gross. Your fancy friends will swoon, but I guarantee there is a person in the group who wants the little cardboard container of whipping cream or the fake non-dairy creamer (either one is okay).

I am thanking you now and leaving. YES, I'm okay to drive or I wouldn't risk it. I'm not a fucking lush.

Christmas with Cracker is over. You can go hump now. Clean up in the morning, just get the big chunks before you go to bed. Start the dishwasher and then start shedding some clothes...

A stoner called the fire department and said, "Come quick my house is on fire!" The Fireman asked "How do we get there?" The stoner says "DUH, the big red truck!"

I bet you throw a good party, Maggot. The men go outside to "see something in the workshop" and the woman have a minute to bitch about your skid marks. Then you all come back in smiling and eat everything the cows left for you. Yes, I bet you throw a fine party with good music.

I don't like home parties that look like hotel parties. I already have to attend work parties with the assholes at work. I want hors d'oeuvres that substitute for a meal so I don't have to stop at Waffle House on the way home...

RE: HOLIDAY HORS D'OEUVRES - Maggot - 11-30-2011

WoW!........I bet you know people that would e-mail the fire department during a fire...........

I know someone that had a fire on Christmas Eve and lost everything. People gave them condolences for years after that. I saw them a year or so after it happened and someone mentioned the fire again. The lady leaned over to me and said, "I hated that fucking house. No closet space." hahahaha I would have lied my fucking ass off about those poofed presents. "Yes, honey, I did buy you exactly what you asked for this year. So sorry you don't get to open it."

People will do what they must do in any given situation. I can see that from the moon.
