About 1,500 new police officers have graduated from New York City's Police Academy during a ceremony at Madison Square Garden.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly presided over the graduation ceremony Thursday for 1,519 new police officers.

'We're very proud,' one graduating officer told NBC4. 'There's nothing else to say but we're very proud as a family.'

The city says they will be assigned to Operation Impact, a program that pairs rookie officers with experienced supervisors and deploys them to targeted high-crime areas.

Wow. Cool pics, LC.

1.) Mostly white dudes, some with porn mustaches. I guess you have to have a clean criminal record to qualify.

2.) They should make those jackets out of stretch material and tailor them a little better. They are not very slimming.

3.) I think they are packing, I see a gun. It is a little strange to be armed during a graduation. Is that normal?

RE: "Let's Be Careful Out There" - Lady Cop - 12-23-2011

misdemeanors usually OK to apply to Academy. nothing involving moral turpitude.

that uniform is not what i was accustomed to, maybe it's a class A winter uniform. normally i would think it would have duty belt.

and once you are wearing that uniform, you better be armed, people out there want to kill your ass.

but...and i don't know about NY, you have not yet been state-certified at Academy graduation (there is a state exam), which is required to carry.

i was required to be armed even if i had only my Dept. baseball cap on. anything that indicates you're a cop makes you a target.

hard for me to tell ratio black to white officers there. i was looking for women officers in that crowd. lady_cop

my graduation was at Christmastime, and i wore Christmas socks with reindeers i thought nobody could see (until i walked up on stage). well my ass got cheerfully chewed. Oops

As much as people complain about the paramilitary thing, I think cops should wear combat clothing/tactical uniforms. It is much easier to move in and has more pockets than the usual button up shirt and slack pants. Clothing shouldn't hinder you when your life is on the line.

(couldn't find one with a cat, haha)

RE: "Let's Be Careful Out There" - Lady Cop - 12-23-2011

i bitched to my Sheriff all the time about wanting to wear cotton BDUs instead of regular hot polyester trousers! so much more practical! and better for a lot of reasons! like in a ground fight.

RE: "Let's Be Careful Out There" - Duchess - 12-23-2011

I admire those that are willing to do that. There's no way in hell I would ever risk my life for all the worthless bastards that are around. I wouldn't want anyone I cared about to do it either. It's just not worth it.

RE: "Let's Be Careful Out There" - d505 - 12-30-2011

I am thinking about joining the police academy because of the benefits.

RE: "Let's Be Careful Out There" - IMaDick - 12-30-2011

Cracker wants paramilitary dress for the cops and we had to stop carrying our PR's because the public thought it was to aggressive looking.

Just goes to show you that some people are fucked up.

Great thread, LC. I have a few cops in my family network and respect the job.

NYPD blues: Ex-cop's gripping portrait of the boredom, the fear and adrenalin rookie officers face on New York's mean streets

Antonio Bolfo was a police officer from 2006 to 2008, working in some of the most crime-ridden housing projects in the South Bronx. A born-and-bred New Yorker, Mr Bolfo's interest in law enforcement was sparked by the World Trade Center attacks, so he, like so many other officers, entered the police academy to find his purpose. But the more and more he fell in love with police work, the more and more he photographed it, capturing an intimate view of New York City's finest never seen before.

I bet you looked hot. Remember Angelina Jolie, a police officer, in her uniform in movie years ago when Densiel (sp?) Washington was bedridden? .. That takes nothing away from the fact that as a woman you make us all proud. I can only imagine how difficult the training was and I can see you hanging in there with all those men and earning their respect.

RE: "Let's Be Careful Out There" - LuciferLynn - 07-26-2012

One time in florida, our cars were broken in to. We called the police and they sent over a female officer. This was in august and hot as hells front porch. She was in full on uniforn and even had a kevlar vest on. She was obviously very uncomfortable. She said wearing a vest when leaving was not an option. I was under the impreasion that they only wore vests if there was a situation that needed them. LC, is that true for all states, or does it differ? Its not as if we lived in a bad neighborhood and all she was doing was coming to dust for prints and take a report. They caught the punks, by the way. Little bastards.

RE: "Let's Be Careful Out There" - Lady Cop - 07-26-2012

i don't know about all states. but it's part of the uniform, you never know when someone is going to take a shot at you. depends on Dept. policy too.
and yes they are damn hot and miserable, especially in florida!
and crush your boobs!

RE: "Let's Be Careful Out There" - LuciferLynn - 07-26-2012

I understand that, I suppose it doesn't matter what neighborhood you're going into. It just seemed so damn miserable for her.
