wow...this is still unfolding, casualties unknown right now.

(CNN) -- A Navy jet crashed Friday into some apartments near Virginia Beach, Virginia, sending flames and thick black smoke into the air, a military spokesman and a witness said.

At least two people were hurt Friday, a hospital spokeswoman said.

The pilot and a person who was on the ground were being treated for injuries, but the nature and extent of those injuries were not immediately clear, the spokeswoman said.

Two apartment buildings were on fire, CNN affiliate WTKR reported, citing witnesses.

The jet was from Naval Air Station Oceana in Virginia Beach, the Federal Aviation Administration said.

The crew of the two-seater F/A-18 safely ejected, but their condition wasn't known, a Navy spokesman said.

The plane is from a training squadron, the Navy said.

I lived on Virginia beach for about 6 months. Many of those apartments are made out of those cheap bricks.Smiley_emoticons_razz

God that looks horrible. Sad.

Not knowing the casualty count at this time, what's your feeling about an air crew abandoning a plane over a populated area so that they can eject (and presumably, survive) versus manning the aircraft all the way to the ground in order to minimize civilian deaths while at the same time most likely writing their own death certificate?

*shrugs* They signed up for the job, they weren't forced into it. It's just more of the same bullshit that goes on daily across America. They should have went down with their plane, much in the same way the retarded ship's captain should have went down with his ship.

Agreed. Regardless of the 'why', I think a military pilot should stay with his aircraft, unless the risk of civilian deaths has been eliminated.

I've heard of the show but I've never watched it. Did they steal my adult diaper plot? hah

it seems heavy black smoke from jet fuel fire has impeded efforts of first responders to get into building(s). if there are no fatalities, it will be a Good Friday miracle IMO. Angel

They did say before they evacuated they emptied the gas tank so it would lesson the explosion...Va Beach is so populated they might not have had any choice if they knew it was going down quickly cause it's all heavily populated...

if they could control the aircraft it wouldn't have crashed.

your assumption that they could have aimed it is fucking retardfed.

I don't fly full size but I do fly fairly large scale RC aircraft, if you lose control of the craft because of a glitch in the control box, that plane is coming down where it does and there is not a fucking thing you can do about it.

Yeah, I don't think they should have gone down with the plane. They have an obligation to do everything they can to protect public safety as they're going down but that's way different than abandoning a slowly sinking ship. Their staying on board wouldn't have changed the crash--they'd just be dead.

Thankfully, no one was hurt that we know of so far.

It's not like Sullenberger's landing on the Hudson River and waiting while all the passengers were evacuated. Totally different circumstances.

Somehow adding two more deaths to a tragedy makes it all ok for some peeps I guess...yanno, the honorable thing to do and all.

I find myself oddly fascinated with this picture. It's like the trailer park nirvana, so bad it's actually...sorta cool.
