If we incarcerated sexual predators for life (or killed them outright) we wouldn't be reading about Mickey and she would be getting ready to finish her last year of college.
This story makes me sick. Lavergne was in prison for 10 years on a sex crime, beat up his wife and lost all parental rights. WTF was he doing out on the streets? Obviously he wasn't on a supervised parole. Do we as a society really think that sexual offenders can be put away for a period of time and NOT commit more sex crimes once they are let out?
Let the low level drug offenders out of our prisons and use the space for sex offenders. Better yet, introduce the death penalty in egregious sexual crimes. One appeal and then execution.

He was in prison from 2000-2008 (dunno the exact months) for the sexual assault. He got out two years early for good behavior. Pate would have been around the time of the assault he was prosecuted for. He was about 21 when entered prison and he's been out for four years. Plenty of free time to commit more crimes.
Someone on Tiger Droppings mentioned (before today) Pate and BL being a suspect back then. That's a good board to read because of all the locals who ae turning out to be right. Adam4LSU (the one with the SIL who was seeing BL) said more murders will be pinned on BL. We shall see. I think this is going to turn into a major serial killer case.

LAFAYETTE -- Acadiana-area law enforcement investigators have at least
five open cases of women found dead since 1994, but they don't think
any of them are related to the serial killings in Baton Rouge and
Lafayette.
DNA evidence has attributed the deaths of four women -- three in Baton
Rouge -- to the same killer.
Monday's revelation that the same person killed 23-year-old Trineishia
Dené Colomb of Lafayette has expanded the scope of the investigation
to Acadiana.
Colomb was found beaten to death on Nov. 24 in Scott.
A man said he saw a white truck -- similar in description to the truck
seen in the Baton Rouge killings -- parked behind Colomb's abandoned
car near Grand Coteau.
DNA evidence taken from the body matched the other serial killings,
Lt. Craig Stansbury said.
In the past 12 years, dozens of women have been killed in the Baton
Rouge area, their slayings still unsolved. Baton Rouge authorities
have said some of those cases may be related, though any connection
with the confirmed serial killer cases can't be made without a DNA
match.
The first three serial killer victims were linked by DNA this summer,
setting Baton Rouge residents on edge and leading to the creation of a
task force that is still trying to solve the crimes.
Gina Wilson Green, 41, was found strangled in her home Sept. 24, 2001.
Charlotte Murray Pace, 22, was found stabbed to death in her home May
31. Pam Kinamore, 44, was abducted from her home July 12. Her throat
was cut and her body dumped at the Whiskey Bay exit off Interstate 10.
All had been sexually assaulted.
Colomb's slaying also seems to have much in common with a killing in
Baton Rouge that has not been tied to the serial killer.
East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Lt. Darrell O'Neal said
investigators are aware of the similarities between Colomb's slaying
and Christine Moore's disappearance and killing in May.
"At this time there has been no evidentiary connection" between the
two crimes, he said.
Moore, an LSU graduate student, was last seen on May 23.
Her abandoned car was found days later and her skeletal remains were
found June 16. Her body had been left in a wooded area next to a River
Road church near the East Baton Rouge and Iberville parish lines.
East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner Dr. Louis Cataldie said Moore appears
to have died from a blow to the head.
The autopsy found a "line fracture" of the skull. Cataldie said that
force could have come from being hit with a blunt object or a fist, or
from being slammed against a wall.
The finding does not rule out the possibility of other injuries that
would not be detectable by examining her bones, he said. Lafayette
Parish Sheriff's spokesman Craig Stansbury said Thursday that his
department has used DNA evidence to eliminate one case from the serial
killer file.
In January 2001, 29-year-old Cennea Guidry was found dead in a ditch
near her suburban Lafayette home. She'd been beaten to death. The case
remains open.
A sample of DNA evidence from the scene did not match DNA evidence
from the serial killings, Stansbury said.

In addition to being indicted for the murder of Mickey Shunick, a grand jury indicted Brandon Lavergne for the 1999 murder of 35-year-old Lisa Pate.
Pate’s went missing in June of 1999 and her remains were found in October 1999 under some boards behind a house near Church Point. Forensics expert Mary Manheim had to help identify the skeletal remains of Pate.
Investigators suspected foul play, but no arrest was ever made in the case.
According to family members, Pate’s remains were located on Brandon Scott Lavergne’s property.

Brandon Lavergne altered his driver license so his sex offender status did not show when he bought a second white Chevrolet truck.
Lafayette Police say his truck, that was seen near in the same area as Mickey Shunick the night she disappeared, was found burned in Texas. They say he then bought a second similar truck. Judice tells TV-10 he changed his driver license so it did not indicate he was a sex offender when he purchased that truck.
Sex offenders must present ID when they buy vehicles so that a notation appears when law enforcement run a license plate check.

This has been revealed by police, who are not clarifying the exact number or whether or not any of the IDs belonged to some of the missing women throughout Louisiana and other states. This is an absolutely disturbing revelation that indicates a possibility that this man is a serial predator. Some of the most notorious serial killers in history were known to keep shrines and souvenirs related to their victims.

shitstorm, I know this may sound far fetched but, could BL have had an affair with Lisa Pate, the baby she had was only a few weeks old when she died, what struck me odd was why did the family keep the 2 boys and then the new baby goes up for adoption? I think that is very odd for a family to do this especially since they think she was murdered, they could not determine the exact cause of death, is there a possibility it's Brandon's child and that's why the family didn't want it. I wonder where the child is now?

Night Owl, I don't have any idea. I was shocked when I read the baby girl was put up for adoption. Looks like the baby girl had a different father or Lisa Pate's family was absent. Don't know who raised the sons or anything else, really. Maybe more will come to light as this goes forward.

When there is a victim of violent crime here it makes the national news. That is not the case because it is so common in contrast there. Also, we don't have access to guns. So if there is a gun crime, even a gun shot into a house, it makes the national news. I know that sounds weird to a country where everyone owns a gun, but in contrast, no one owns a gun here. Except of course for police, farmers, underworld mob type criminals.

“We’re looking into all of our unresolved cases and we’re looking into other areas as well,” Cpt. Kip Judice, Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office, explained. “Anytime you have a person who you believe to be responsible for multiple deaths, you’re going to review all cold cases. So what we’ve done is established a course of time to determine any missing person cases or homicides that have similarities.”

“We are confident about Lavergne’s connection to these two cases,” Cpt. Judice, noted. “At this point in time, I am unaware of any other cases that we have such strong evidence.”
Judice noted that Lafayette Parish has roughly two dozen unresolved missing person cases that date back to roughly 1997.
“As much as we’re looking at cases he could have possibly been involved with, we’re also looking to clear him from cases as well,” Cpt. Judice, explained.
Any case that happened between 2000-2008 could not be connected to Lavergne because he was incarcerated for oral sexual battery. He was convicted for typing up, blindfolding and sexually assaulting an 18-year-old woman from Evangeline Parish back in 1999.
“Everyone initially thought that he would be connected to the Jeff Davis murders, but he was incarcerated at the time, so there’s no possible way he could have been connected to those cases,” Cpt. Judice, said. “Also, he worked off shore, so we need to account for that time and find those cases that fit that timeline.”
For now, investigators are not ruling out any possible matches. Lavergne’s past conviction as well as the two homicides for which he’s been indicted, have striking difference.
“I think these are two distinct cases,” Cpt. Judice, said. “I don’t know what his motive is in the two cases we know about.
“We are pretty confident we know how he accomplished Mickey’s homicide,” he continued. “The information is limited in the Pate case. Yes, we have a clue, but we don’t expect an offender to commit the same crime the same way. For example, Pate wasn’t riding a bike, but Mickey was. The girl in Evangeline Parish was an associate of his, so he knew her, but we don’t think that he knew Mickey or Pate. We have a lot to look at.”

Aussie, if you look up serial killers, you'll find they're all over the world. In Peru or Chile, they let one go who killed over 20 people and they have no idea where he is.
There is a LOT of propaganda that gets printed about the US, especially in the commonwealth countries. I've read it myself. If you believed the BBC, you'd think our streets are filled with homeless people, every other person is bankrupt over medical bills, and people are getting shot all over the country. That's just bullshit. Most of the violent crime is urban and among the the lowlifes, welfare recipients and minorities. In places where local govt has tried to make guns and self defense illegal (places run by progressives), violent crime is worse. Criminals ALWAYS have weapons so disarming the law abiding just makes the law abiding easier targets.

Shitstorm, I was thinking that was the case. Like that the statistics were the same per capita or maybe even worse in some nations. We have perpetrators here in Australia like in the US of course. When you hear of 'raids' on child porn rings, they are all walks of life here in Oz too. Given that you have a much larger population maybe it seems like the incidence are higher.
A current affairs programme here in Australia, very popular and the vast amounts of Australians watch it called 'Q and A' (question and answer). They discussed the US on Monday night talking about an 'underclass' that we don't have here. This 'underclass' brought with it many other social problems. Well that is what they were saying anyway.
I have never visited the US, it is definately on my 'to do list'. So I am trying to understand the US psyche of violent crime based on my distant perceptions and what I observe.
I watched a documentary on the last 9 years of John Lennon's life. I was pleased to see how during that time in the US, in his life, how friendly and kind the US citizens where to him. They really embraced him and loved him. I thought, 'that's the US, I know'. Then of course, it ended with him the victim of a violent gun crime which was devastating. His experience of the US, how much he loved it, how much they loved him, and how he did not want to leave. In fact, fought to stay. How he could totally be himself and be embraced and not judged. Then he gets killed by a fat creepy stalker.

New Court Records Reveal What DA's Office Believes Happened in Shunick, Pate Murders

A new document was filed into court today in the case of the State of Louisiana versus Brandon Scott Lavergne. Assistant District Attorney Keith Stutes filed a "Disclosure, Production, Notice to Defendant, and Request for State's Discovery". In it, he outlines what information is available to the defendant's attorneys, but the document also gives clues as to how the murder's of Mickey Shunick and Lisa Pate were investigated by police.
*Intent to seek death penalty:
The document clearly states prosecutors plan on seeking the death penalty for the murders of Pate and Shunick. Explaining why the death penalty is wanted, the filing claims that the murders were committed "in an especially heinous, atrocious, or cruel manner" and that Lavergne has "knowingly killed two or more persons" in separate incidents.
*At trial:
The state wants to have photographs of the victims, not larger than 8 x 10, introduced into evidence and displayed during the entire trial. The claim is that the victims, through photos, are entitled to be present at the trial.
*The DA's Office outlines what they think happened:
The court record filed by the DA's office claims the following information is fact: On or about July 3, 1999, Lavergne met Lisa Pate in Lafayette Parish. It is alleged Pate was persuaded or forced to another location, where she was forced, for her release, to "engage in non-consensual acts, and/or inflicted physical injury, and/or sexual abuse upon Lisa Pate." The document says Lavergne killed Pate and moved the evidence, including the body, "with the intent to distort the results of the criminal investigation."
The court record filed by the DA's office also claims the following information is fact: On or about May 19, 2012, Lavergne forcibly seized Mickey Shunick and carried her to another place where he refused to release her. It is alleged Lavergne "forced her to engage in non-consensual acts, and inflicted physical injury and/or sexual abuse". The document says Lavergne killed Mickey and moved evidence of the murder, including her body and belongings, "to locations with the intent to distort the results of the criminal investigation." Lavergne is also accused of obstruction of justice and the continued tampering of the body of Mickey Shunick. The state also adds that anyone knowing where Mickey's body may be could be charged with Accessories After the Fact.
In the filing, the state claims after Lavergne murdered Mickey, he moved his truck to an out-of-state location, where he intentionally destroyed it. The document alleges Lavergne did so to destroy evidence and distort the results of any criminal investigation. The truck was found May 31, 2012, and that's when Lavergne is accused of providing a false vehicle theft report and a fraudulent claim with State Farm Insurance. The state says Lavergne purchased an identical truck on June 4, 2012 in Lafayette, and in the process, altered his ID to hide the "sex offender" label on his license. Lavergne is also accused of contacting an official at the DMV, offering $500 to get an ID without the "sex offender" label.
*Evidence from the State:
Stutes outlines in the document what he is, and is not, required to turn over. Examples of items he says he doesn't have to give include names and address of witnesses or victims or anything that is public record.
Stutes will provide the initial reports, arrest warrants, search warrants, and the crime scene report. He'll also give the transcription of a voluntary statement Lavergne allegedly gave to a deputy in July after he was read his rights.
Stutes does, in this document, list off statements he has from Lavergne that were given to different people/entities. Included in the list are statements Lavergne allegedly made while in jail to different people, at Oschner's Hospital, to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office, at Opelousas General, to the San Jacinto Sheriff's Office, to State Farm Insurance, and to family members. Other agencies or people listed as having given statements, are only listed as acronyms. The state says they aren't required to tell the defense what was told to them, only that the statements exist.
The state also lists all the search warrants they executed, including homes in Church Point, Crowley, Lafayette, Duson, and Lawtell. They've served search warrants for Lavergne's financial records, for vehicles belonging to Lavergne and others, medical records, a Church Point dumpster, and OnStar information. There are also two warrants to install tracking devices. One was from the 15th JDC in Lafayette; the other warrant was for the 2009 Silverado, belonging to Lavergne, from the 25th JDC in Plaquemines Parish.
The state also says they'll allow the defense to inspect/copy evidence that belonged to the defendant that they plan on using in trial. They'll also turn over results of any physical/mental examinations or scientific tests done in connection with this case.
Stutes does inform the defense he will be bringing up other crimes Lavergne committed, including his guilty plea of Aggravated Oral Sexual Battery in Evangeline Parish in 1999. The document claims the offense was similar, if not identical, to the Pate and Shunick cases, but without murder.
*Evidence the state requests:
The state requests the following from the defense:
1) any documents or tangible objects that they plan to use in the trial
2) reports of examinations and tests
3) mental condition, if the information is to be used in the trial
4) an alibi, if the defense plans on offering up one. It should include date, time, and names/addresses of witnesses.

This is going to be a big case. Lavergne is rumored to have had the drivers licenses of several women. He will turn to out be a serial killer. He's also an arsonist.
