I've had a few that I couldn't swallow too. The places that try to make them fancy or add some special ingredient usually screw them up.
1⁄4 vodka in a very big glass, tomato juice (or V8), a dash of Tabasco, a pinch of pepper, a celery stalk and a couple of green olives. I like salt on the rim, too.
That's how I make them at home and how they generally make them at airport bars. I'm having a couple for lunch later today at a pub I've never been to before. Pubs usually get them right.
