There is no federal funding for elective abortions. Trump knows that, so do all of his competitors. Federal funding for abortions has been prohibited by the Hyde Amendment for 40 years. It's just religious/conservative-peddled spin when politicians and leaders mislead the public into believing otherwise.
It's amazing how many people swallow the bullshit whole, even though the federal law has been in place for so long and is accessible to all, and it's closely monitored and has not been violated.
The ultra conservative spin-masters know that the small percentage of Planned Parenthood business that comprises abortions is privately funded, not government funded.
For those spin-masters who bother to attempt rationalizing their misleading rhetoric, their claim is that if the government ceased to fund all of the great female and family health services Planned Parenthood provides, Planned Parenthood -- the largest provider of LEGAL PRIVATELY-FUNDED abortion services -- would cease to exist.
Some bullshittin' conservative leaders and politicians went so far as to claim that an edited sting video of Planned Parenthood reps discussing legal reimbursement for the cost of donating life-saving elective stem-cell tissue from aborted fetuses was actually for-profit killing of late term fetuses in order to harvest baby body parts (which is illegal by federal law). That's also been proven to be complete bullshit in state courts over and over since the allegations were made; Planed Parenthood has been cleared of the false allegations in every court; the sting video con artists, on the other hand, were indicted by a Grand Jury.
So, for me, Trump's recognition of the excellent non-abortion services Planed Parenthood provides puts him in front of his GOP competitors on that issue. However, his threat to stop making those excellent services available to millions of women and families across the country in order to force Planned Parenthood out of business just puts him at the top of the bottom of the barrel.
In reality, Trump's changed his position so many times depending on the audience and his personal goals, I wouldn't be surprised if his threat to defund Planned Parenthood was back-pedaled completely if he were elected President.
