He was committed to a mental institution after telling the FBI that government voices in his head were pushing him to fight for ISIS, he had combat and weapons training in the military, he'd recently tried to choke his wife...
And, yet, he was not put on the No-Fly List. Under current law, that wouldn't have stopped him from possessing a gun (unless a doctor and court also ruled him incompetent), but would have at least prevented him from getting on a plane.
In this case though, he could have carried out the same soft-target mass shooting attack at any airport in the country by just walking in. Baggage claim and check-in areas are very loosely secured.
Anyway..........the press conference this morning was mostly a whole lot of "it's too early in the investigation to say", but the FBI investigator did confirm that Santiago is cooperating, LE has interviewed over 175 witnesses, no evidence of an in-flight altercation or other triggers has been uncovered thus far, and LE is still not sure why Santiago flew to Fort Lauderdale.
