THE TRUMP PRESIDENCY
[Image: 171030081513-manafort-gates-split-large-169.jpg]

Paul Manafort and Rick Gates were placed on house arrest following their arraignments on Monday because the judge agreed they were both flight risks based on the following information presented by prosecutors.

* Manafort currently has three US passports, each under a different number. He has submitted 10 passport applications in roughly as many years, prosecutors said.

* This year, Manafort traveled to Mexico, China and Ecuador with a phone and email account registered under a fake name. (The name was not disclosed in the filings.)

* Over the past year, Manafort traveled to Dubai, Cancun, Panama City, Havana, Shanghai, Madrid, Tokyo and Grand Cayman Island.

* Both Manafort and Gates were frequent travelers to Cyprus. “Extensive travel of this nature further evidences a risk of flight,” the prosecutor’s filing said.

* Manafort wrote on loan applications and other financial documents that his assets were worth between $19 million in April 2012 and $136 million in May 2016.

* In some months, like while he served as Trump’s national campaign chairman in August 2016, Manafort’s assessment of his total worth fluctuated. In August 2016 he said his assets were worth $28 million, then wrote he had $63 million in assets on a different application.

* Gates “frequently changed banks and opened and closed bank accounts,” prosecutors said. In all, Gates opened 55 accounts with 13 financial institutions, the prosecutors’ court filing said. Some of his bank accounts were in England and Cyprus, where he held more than $10 million from 2010 to 2013.

Manafort’s and Gates’ attorneys have asked the judge to release them from house arrest. Currently, Manafort and Gates’ house arrest conditions mean they can only leave their homes to meet with lawyers or appear in court, or for medical and religious reasons, and they must check in with authorities daily.

Their next court appearance is scheduled for tomorrow afternoon.

They're walking definitions of flight risk; I don't think the judge will release them from house arrest.

They face sentences of more than 10 years if convicted on all charges. Both say they’re not guilty.

Kevin Spacey on Trump:
“Foreign films contain two things Donald Trump hates the most: foreigners and reading.” Warming to his theme, the actor said he could never “vote for a candidate who wasn’t in favour of separation of man and face,” in a reference to Trump’s chin. He added: “Donald Trump would probably love it here, because there are so many casinos to bankrupt.” Donald Trump is a disease"
Dustin Hoffman on Trump:
The Oscar-winning star gave us a rather empathetic point of view of Trump and his supporters and suggested checking out the book “Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis” by J.D Vance in order to understand that perspective.

That's true and he's not the first person I've seen recommend that book if one wants a better understanding of trump supporters. trump supporters in general have common denominators.

Yes, it's called the Constitution. Trump is reminding the Senators and Representatives of that pesky piece of paper that limits their ability to "govern"

And so it goes on. In the News today:

Donald Trump did not bow when he met Japan's emperor on Monday, opting to lower his head slightly instead.

Bowing to international leaders has been a contentious issue for US presidents in the past.

In Japan, bowing is an important sign of respect and following local customs helps strengthen diplomatic relations.

Hello. Is there anybody out there? Anybody who gives a fuck or two?

Brett J. Talley, President Trump’s nominee to be a federal judge in Alabama, has never tried a case, was unanimously rated “not qualified” by the American Bar Assn.’s judicial rating committee, has practiced law for only three years and, as a blogger last year, displayed a degree of partisanship unusual for a judicial nominee, denouncing “Hillary Rotten Clinton” and pledging support for the National Rifle Assn. On Thursday, the Senate Judiciary Committee, on a party-line vote, approved him for a lifetime appointment to the federal bench.

Some conservatives discount the ABA’s rating. “The ABA is a liberal interest group. They have a long history of giving lower ratings to Republican nominees,” said Carrie Severino, counsel for the Judicial Crisis Network, which supports Trump’s nominees. She said past liberal nominees have been rated as qualified even if they had little or no courtroom experience.

That would never happen. hah

Carrie Severino is a Conservative and can often be found on Fox. *snorts* Like I'd pay credence to what she had to say. Fox News contributor AND Christian Conservative. Ahahaha

I would sooner trust a random Mexican or Black before I'd trust a white Christian Conservative.

I'm here. I see what Trump is doing with his federal judge nominees. Four of them are "not qualified" according to the ABA. They've approved the majority of Trump's nominees, but four "unqualifieds" among so few nominees is unprecedented.

Let's hope Talley, a paranormal 'ghost hunter' and horror story writer, does not get confirmed. Yeah, he's got a law degree and important sounding legal title in Alabama, but the man has zero trial experience. I wouldn't support a Democratic or Independent nominee with those qualifications and I don't support this Republican one.

Too bad for me and others who give a shit about who's sitting behind the bench that White House Counsel Donald McGahn announced the administration would no longer give the ABA's Standing Committee special access to nominees. Trump wants young white males in those positions, regardless of qualifications, it sure seems.

Hey, guess who Talley's wife and partner in paranormal ghost-hunting is? She's Ann Donaldson, the chief of staff to the White House Counsel Donald McGahn. Seriously.

Talk about filling the swamp. Maybe Talley's failure to disclose his family connections will stop him from getting the lifetime appointment. But, I kinda doubt it.

Rep. Steve Cohen of Tennessee on Wednesday became the third Democrat this year to introduce articles of impeachment against Donald Trump, saying the president's 'illegal conduct' including obstruction of justice is grounds for removal.

'We're calling upon the House to begin impeachment hearings immediately,' Cohen, whose district includes much of Memphis, told reporters as he unveiled five articles accusing Trump.

The measure has five other co-sponsors, and Cohen said about a dozen others are close to signing on.

The impeachable allegations include:
--Obstructing justice during the firing of FBI Director Comey
--Violation of Constitution's Emoluments clause, says Trump is profiting off presidency
--Undermining the judiciary via the pardon of Sheriff Joe Arpaio

Under the rules of Congress, a majority vote in the 435-member House of Representatives is required to impeach a president. Republicans control the chamber with a 46-seat advantage, so the chance of a vote or hearings on the matter is virtually zero for now.

Democratic House minority leader Nancy Pelosi has been resisting the effort. I think Pelosi is on the right side of this one.
