The basic cause of the appearance that history repeats itself is the cavalier assumption that we are immune to making the same mistakes our predecessors did. Or suffering the same fate. We are treading the path that leads to catastrophic loss of power, prestige and unification. As it has countless times before.

The "appearance" of history repeating itself could be taken many ways, picking and choosing which part of history that has repeated itself may be a higher goal than I or you could "assume" .
