A sheriff's deputy missing since he swam into a swollen eastern Wyoming river to help a struggling girl was hailed as a hero Friday, as the search continued and an official revealed the girl had jumped in the waterway because she was upset with her boyfriend.
Converse County Deputy Bryan Gross, 29, swam into the North Platte River in the town of Douglas to try to help the girl at about 5pm on Thursday, Undersheriff Don Schoenleber said.
Gross went into the high-flowing river from one side while several others swam in from the other, Schoenleber said.
Gross worked as a Douglas police officer for a few years before joining the sheriff's department recently.
Henning said Gross had worked at the police department as a drug officer, handling a trained dog. He added Gross had gotten married within the past month or so to a woman who worked as a receptionist for the city.
Douglas Mayor Bruce Jones said the situation is hitting his town hard.
'Anytime you go into the water like that, it's heroic,' Jones said. 'Of course to him, he's probably just doing his job.'
Searchers on Thursday continued to look for Gross until nightfall, Schoenleber said. Deputies used lights on area bridges to scan the river overnight to keep watch for Gross.
Schoenleber said 30 to 40 people, including some using boats and aircraft including a military helicopter, resumed the search at daybreak on Friday. He said searchers were walking the riverbank, with some using tracking dogs.
