FREEMANSBURG, Pa. -- The shooting death of Officer Robert Lasso has sent shock-waves through the tiny borough of Freemansburg and beyond.

Now an accused cop-killer is in custody and officials are still working to piece together exactly what happened Thursday night.

Officer Lasso responded to a report of a verbal disturbance at the Washington street, Freemansburg home of George Hitcho Jr., 46.

Officer Lasso called for back up.

In court documents, Freemansburg Police Chief George Bruneio says when he responded, Lasso was in Hitcho's yard being attacked by two dogs.

Bruneio told investigators he ordered Lasso to shoot the dogs with a taser.

That's when Bruneio says he heard a loud pop, saw Lasso fall to the ground and saw Hitcho holding a shotgun.

Neighbors describe what happened next.

"I heard the shot," said neighbor Jose Casellas. "I heard an argument with somebody there."

"I heard our Chief say drop the gun," said neighbor Chris Spengler. "Then we saw our chief on the phone and we saw EMS coming and police were coming from everywhere and they were telling everybody get in the house."

Officer Robert Lasso was shot and killed while responding to a domestic disturbance call in the small town of Freemansburg on Thursday.

The suspect, 46-year-old George Hicho, Jr., was arraigned on one charge of criminal homicide on Friday and is being held without bail in the Northampton County Prison.

According to court documents, the police chief saw Hitcho's two dogs attacking Lasso, so Lasso pointed a stun gun at them. That's when, authorities say, Hitcho shot Lasso in the head with a shotgun.

FREEMANSBURG, Pa. - August 12, 2011 (WPVI) -- Family and community members were reflecting on their loss Friday, one day after Northampton County police officer was killed in the line of duty.

"I can't begin to say how devastated this family is on the loss of Robert," said father Donald Lasso, a borough councilman and the past chief of the local fire company. He was surrounded by family as they remembered the father of two small children, adding "He was with us such a short time, but changed so many lives."

"He lived for his kids. He loved them so much and now they're not going to have a daddy," said Officer Lasso's mother, Elsie Stem.
