GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Glendale police Officer Brad Jones was shot Friday night outside an apartment complex near 75th and Glendale avenues. The 27-year-old husband and father of two was rushed to St. Joseph's Hospital where he died shortly after midnight.

The shooting happened around 9 p.m. and immediately afterward a massive police presence blanketed the area around the apartment complex.

Ryan Heisler, 20, who was on probation for theft, was meeting with his probation officer and Jones. A physical struggle ensued and Jones was shot, according to Officer Tracey Breeden. Heisler then fled in Jones' police cruiser.

Glendale officers pursued the suspect to the 8100 block of West Glendale Avenue, where Heisler abandoned the police cruiser after getting in a single-vehicle collision. After a brief foot chase, Heisler reportedly pointed his weapon at the officers, who then shot the suspect.

Heisler was transported to Banner Good Samaritan Hospital where he remains in critical condition.

Jones was with the Glendale Police Department for four years.

"He had a passion for the work and helping people," the department said in a press release. "He will be deeply missed by every member of our department."

Gov. Jan Brewer released the following statement on Saturday:

"Like all Arizonans, I am shocked and saddened today by the loss of Glendale Police Officer Brad Jones, 26. Officer Jones was the victim of a shooting late Friday while working in the line of duty, and succumbed to his wounds early this morning.

"His death is yet another tragic reminder of the danger that members of state, local and federal law enforcement encounter daily in their noble mission to keep us safe. Ours is a debt of gratitude that cannot be repaid – most especially to Officer Jones, his wife and two young children.

"What we can do on a day as heavy-hearted as this is offer our thanks to all Arizonans who endure the sacrifices of service in our law enforcement, public safety and military professions. Please also join me in saying a prayer for Officer Jones, as well as his family and colleagues with the Glendale Police Department who are in mourning today.

"In honor of Glendale Police Officer Brad Jones, I have ordered that all flags be flown at half-staff until sunset today."
