I'm going to enjoy Thanksgiving so much more now that I have visual proof that ducks shit in the cranberries.

I don't know. They do have hedge hogs which I thought was kinda neat. I snuck one home in my jacket pocket.

This fucking cranberry thread gives me nightmares every year. At first it was because I felt guilty not making my own cranberry sauce, so I associated it with negative feelings. Then I started hating it because I realized I would likely never enjoy the beautiful harvest in person, so negative feelings of envy would automatically be added and set in quickly. Now, my hate revolves around something that trumps all those other items, and to be honest, it's enough to make me never dwell in this type of thread again. In a way it's liberating because I am free of concerns that are actually cranberry related. I am referring to the unbelievably, tormentingly boring posts by QueenBee. I almost punched my monitor after reading about her fucking craisins.

Cape Cod Times

"If (the harvest) comes in according to predictions, it would be our second biggest harvest on record," said Hilary Sandler, a cranberry specialist at the UMass Cranberry Station in East Wareham.

Experts are projecting the crop will reach about 2.1 million in Massachusetts , Sandler said. The United States as a whole is predicted to get a 7.5-million barrel harvest, which would be the country's second largest recorded harvest.

A barrel, or 100 pounds of cranberries, costs an average of $20 to $25 for growers to produce, Sandler said.

hah i have to laugh,
my son and his buddy wanted some extra cash, so they hired on for the day dry-picking cranberries. the bog owner's machine had broken down, and he needed the bog picked.
so my son made like a Pilgrim today the old-fashioned way. he is downstairs now moaning about everything that hurts! hahahaha
i think it was a good historical experience. he doesn't. next i am sending him out for some wild turkeys.

they used this antique scoop, just like the Pilgrims.

I too, take pleasure in my kids having to do things the old fashioned way...
you know, like dial a pay phone, get up to change the channel, pop
popcorn on top of the stove etc.
I wish TO GOD we had a broken down cranberry machine and a cranberry
bog that needed picking near here. I make them go.
Id even go stand nearby and
holler that they missed one, while taking pictures.
You are missed...RIP Lady Cop

A few things about cranberries.............

I believe I am now a copy/pasty, like those girls in Mass. with those little pasty things they stick on their tits...........Hell it could be cranberries ? I would lick them off at any rate. Yes......cranberries are much like tits.

Selection
Good, ripe cranberries will bounce, which is why they are nicknamed “bounceberries.” They should be shiny and plump and range in color from bright light red to dark red. Shriveled berries or those with brown spots should be avoided. Cranberries do not ripen after harvest..

Storage
Store fresh cranberries in a tightly-sealed plastic bag in the refrigerator. As with all berries, if one starts getting soft and decaying, the others will quickly soften and decay also. Be sure to sort out the soft ones if you plan to store them for more than a few days. Fresh cranberries may last up to 2 months in the refrigerator. Cooked cranberries can last up to a month in a covered container in the refrigerator. Washed cranberries may be frozen for up to 1 year in airtight bags.

Preparation
Cranberries are often too tart to be eaten raw. Most cranberries need be cooked before they are eaten. No matter what preparation method you choose, cook cranberries only until they pop because overcooking gives them a bitter taste.

Since cranberries are almost 90% water, do not thaw frozen cranberries before cooking them. Thawing, will cause the fruit to breakdown, resulting in soft cranberries.

Cranberries may be baked with a sweetener to make a topping or sauce, or they can added to baked goods, such as muffins. They are also good chopped with oranges to make a relish.

VARIETIES
There are four major varieties of cranberries: European, American, Mountain, and Highbush.

American
This variety is the most common in the United States. The U.S. Department of Agriculture uses this variety as the standard for fresh cranberries and cranberries used for juice. This variety is bright red.

European
This variety is smaller than the American and is eaten less often than other varieties. It is primarily ornamental.

Mountain
This variety is approximately ¼ to ½ inch in diameter and is bright red to dark red. It is occasionally found in markets.

Highbush
This variety is primarily used for jellies, jams, and sauces. It is also used as an ornamental fruit.

Whole berry cranberry sauce is so easy to make and so much better than the stuff in a can. I have been making it for years and my extended family thinks it is something really special, so I get to make it for Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners. That is my big major contribution, but all I really do is follow the directions on the back of the Ocean Spray Cranberry bag and add a little bit of zest from a fresh orange. It is so simple that it is pitiful that my friends and family are so impressed.

I love the look of freshly made cranberry sauce in a glass or crystal bowl.

CHICAGO (AP) — Nicholas Mackara isn't about to drive over to his parents' house for Thanksgiving to sit down to a dish of some fancy homemade cranberry sauce that Martha Stewart might serve. He's so determined that his cranberry sauce come from a can that he assigns himself the job of bringing it.

It's a thing of beauty on his holiday table, a log-shaped gelatinous roll with ridges that signal to purists like himself that no one is trying to put an imposter on the menu.

"I think the ridges are the most important part," said the 21-year-old resident of Clementon, N.J. "Then you know it definitely came from a can and our mom didn't make her own (cranberry) sauce and put it in a cylinder shape before we got there."

Cranberry bogs are the shit.

Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.
