Major League Baseball Opening Day

One of my 5 favorite days of the year. A true harbinger of spring... This represents, to me at least, that summer is right around the corner (my favorite time of year).

I'm sure many of us that are older, have memories of a baseball game on the radio, being with our dads, granparents, etc.

Makes me think of the Chicago tune, "Old Days". Sorry, a little sentimental.

I coached Babe Ruth ball for a lot of years, It was always fun to see who the boys were trying to emulate in their style.

I have balls signed by all of my teams, I waited to see if any of them went on to greatness, while many of them were exceptional players, none went pro, a couple went from college ball into the minors for awhile.

Baseball is still my favorite sport.

Your Red Sox are loaded this year. A LOT of expectations. We'll see how the new guys do.

I'm with you on this one Dick. My son is a senior this year, and pitching for his high school team. Should be a fun time at the ballpark!

will you forgive me for bragging? this pic is my son at 16. 6'4" lefty throwing 90mph. he was scouted by almost every ML team in 11th grade, recruited by Miami Hurricanes, and on day after his HS graduation, drafted by a ML team. baseball was our whole life from little league on because it was clear even then he was very talented. fast as hell and heavy hitter too.
i was very proud of him, he chose college over the minors, he was only 18 and i wanted him in school. he paid for all his college by pitching.

Damn! A 6'4" lefty throwing 90mph?? He could have a job in the majors as a situational lefty until he's 40. Did he pitch for the Hurricanes? Any pro ball?

i don't want to go into detail about where and who, but i will say this. our hearts were ripped out when certain coaches overpitched him and tore up his left elbow. (not rotator cuff) several surgeries did not cure it. our hearts are still broken. but he has great memories of true glory days (Springsteen's song 'Glory Days' always makes me cry) and has moved on with his life. but it still hurts.

Sorry to hear that LC. How many years ago is this? It's funny, when I was a teen, no coaches really ever supervised how we warmed up, how many breaking balls we through, etc.

My elbow felt like it was toast by the time I was 16 or 17.

I will say this about the staff at my sons' HS, they have many, many exercises they do for their arms. They're on pitch counts, and they can only throw a handful of breaking balls. I really don't have any fear of him injuring himself.

RE: Major League Baseball Opening Day

One of my favorite days of the whole year. Use to ditch school, hop on the train, plunk down 50 cents for a bleacher seat and spend a wonderful day at Wrigley.

I'm afraid fenway is something I will probably never see, I do my best to stay west of the mississippi.

But I can see the draw of those historic ball fields.

Baseball is the only US sport I don't "get".

I like Gridiron, hockey and basketball but baseball?, nah.

I suppose it would be like me trying to explain cricket to an American.

Yesterday in the cricket world cup India knocked out Pakistan in the semi final, well over a billion people were watching it on TV but I bet no one in the US even knew it was taking place.

OP, I saw a brief highlight on 'SportCenter', but didn't know the result.

And, you're right, I have know idea how the scoring works in that game.

RE: Major League Baseball Opening Day

There are similarities between cricket and baseball, baseball is also similar to a British game called "rounders" which is mainly played by girls, but I do remember playing "softball" every now and then in high school.

I think cricket is similar to baseball in that its probably more fun to play than watch. I don't know what I would dread most, a roided up pitcher wanging a fastball at my head, or a 6'8" West Indian aiming a 90 mile per hour bouncer towards my face.

Some cricket test matches take FIVE DAYS!
