CONCORD, N.H. — The disappearance of an 11-year-old girl from her house just a mile from the Canadian border has rattled nerves in her small town as crews today searched the Connecticut River.

Celina Cass was last seen in her house in tiny Stewartstown Monday night around 9 p.m., and was gone the next morning, authorities said. Police have said there’s no indication she ran away or that someone took her, and there are no signs of a struggle.

"Honestly, we don’t know where else we can look," said Lt. Douglas Gralenski, a state Fish and Game official whose agency is assisting state police in searching the river. "There’s so much that’s unknown."

State and federal law enforcement officials scoured a half-mile perimeter around the family home on Tuesday, and family, friends and neighbors held a vigil for her near the house that night.

Her stepfather, Wendell Noyes, described Celina as a quiet girl who would not have left the home on her own. He declined to comment further, adding "I’m not really at liberty to say anything."

Shannon Towles, who owns Towles Mini-Mart on Route 3, said Celina’s disappearance has shaken the town of 800.

"It’s creepy," she said. "Things like this don’t happen here. I know that’s kind of a tired phrase. I’m an overprotective mom as it is. Now it’s going to be way worse."

Towles, whose daughter is best friends with Celina’s 13-year-old sister, said Celina is not the type to hitchhike or run away. "She’s just a little girl and she’s a nice little girl."

Gralenski said Wednesday that a small boat with an officer and fishing guide was searching the river about a quarter of a mile from her home. He said the river was lowered Tuesday to help with the search. The river runs between New Hampshire and Vermont, where state police also have helped with the search.

"It’s not a deep river. You’d be hard-pressed to find six to eight feet in most of it in that area," he said. "When we had it drawn down, it was exceptionally low." That allowed the U.S. Border Patrol to search by helicopter and some officers to search the river by kayak before severe thunderstorms passed through Tuesday afternoon.

At the peak of the search Tuesday, Gralenski said there were at least three dozen officers, New England K-9 handlers, and a search and rescue group assisting by water, air, and land, including ATV trails in the woods.

"We found no evidence that she had been in that area and of course, we have no evidence she is lost as opposed to missing, either," he said.

The area is densely wooded and there’s little to no cell phone reception.

In addition to the river search Wednesday, some officers were searching areas where some of the dog teams showed some interest, Gralenski said.

Towles said in addition to her stepfather and sister, Celina lives with her mother, Louisa Noyes, who works part-time at a consignment shop in Colebrook. Her father is very ill and is hospitalized, she said.

Towles said her daughter asked her if she thought Celina was still alive.

"How do I answer that question? And do I want to? I don’t want to think about it, but I pray every second that she is," Towles said.

A helicopter and search dogs combed areas of Stewartstown in extreme northern New Hampshire Tuesday for an 11-year-old who was missing when her family went to wake her in the morning.

Celina Cass, a lanky 11-year-old with a girlish smile, was last seen at 9 p.m. Monday in her bedroom on her computer, said her stepfather, Wendell Noyes.

She was gone the next morning. New Hampshire State Police said they don't know whether foul play is involved, and there was no evidence of a struggle at her home.

"Obviously, we're looking at every possibility," said state police Lt. Sheldon Belanger. "But it's really up in the air right now. It's kind of bizarre."

Belanger said dozens of people, several search dogs and a U.S. Border Patrol helicopter were looking for Cass Tuesday evening. They are focusing on Stewartstown, a town of 964 people wedged between Pittsburg to the north and Colebrook to the south.

Authorities said they have taken some evidence from the family home to try to track her down.

Also, police have talked to family, friends and many of the residents of Stewartstown, said state police Lt. Todd Landry. Reverse 911 calls have been made to people living in a 75-mile radius of her home, he said.

As of Tuesday evening, no responses had panned out, he said.

Cass is 5-foot, 5-inches and weighs 95 pounds. She has hazel eyes and waist-length brown hair. She was last seen wearing a pink shirt, pink pullover, blue shorts and shoes.

Landry said Cass gave no indication to her family members she was leaving.

"It was unlikely for her to make unannounced departures from her home," Landry said. The home is on Route 3 in the village of Stewartstown; nearby stores would have been closed by 9 p.m., Landry said.

He said Cass gets along with her family and had no medical issues that would prompt her to leave.

"She never goes out of the house," Noyes said in a brief telephone conversation. He said Monday night was normal, and Cass was gone when he went into her room Tuesday morning.

Noyes couldn't think of anyone she would run away with, or anyone who would abduct her.

Her stepfather's message to Cass: "Get your butt home."

The answer is in the story, in her bedroom on her computer. 11 year olds should not have private access to a computer or to the internet.

She is either in the hands of a predator, or she ran away with someone of similar age.

or she's hiding in the barn.

WCAX Vermont

A mystery in our region-- an 11-year-old girl is missing.

Celina Cass vanished from her home near the Vermont border in West Stewartstown, N.H.

On Tuesday night, the community gathered at a vigil. More than 50 people-- friends, family, and teachers-- hold candles and hope that the missing girl will be found safe.

"She's 11 years old. She's never left the home before without her mom and her sister," Rachel Edgerton said.

Edgerton and her family joined the search for 11-year-old Celina Cass, who disappeared from her home on Washington Street. She was last seen Monday at 9 p.m.

"Last we heard, she was on the computer when her mother went to bed," Edgerton said.

When Celina's mom went to wake her up Tuesday morning, Celina was gone. Police say there were no signs of struggle and Celina does not have a history of running away.

She is 5' 5" and weighs 95 pounds. She has hazel eyes and long brown hair. Celina was wearing a pink shirt and pullover, and blue shorts and shoes.

N.H. State Police, N.H. Fish and Game, U.S. Border Patrol, and local police combed the area.

"A great deal of time has gone by so basically from this standpoint, we are doing everything we can to search areas of high probability or even low probability," said Lt. Douglas Gralenski of the N.H. Fish and Game Department.

Friends, family and neighbors handed out photos and posters of the missing girl, hoping someone has seen her.

"We got posters and brought them to the stores. While we were walking, we thought we'd look through here since no one has been through here yet," said Edgerton, pointing to an area off Route 3.

Celina's Facebook page includes the quote "You can't stand to live with your family, but you can't stand to live without them."

Anyone with information about the girl's disappearance is asked to call the New Hampshire State Police at 603-846-3333.

Your 11 year old kid (stepchild) is missing and you're acting like a hard-ass?

He sounds like a keeper.

I can only hope he has single brothers who display his warmth and compassion.

I wonder where her father is hospitalized?

RE: Celina Cass, 11. N.H. missing

AG's presence makes me wonder what they are thinking.
The New Hampshire Attorney General's Office has taken over the investigation, and state police said Assistant Attorney General Jane Young was en route to Stewartstown. (i recall from another case she is very closed-mouthed.)

Forbes

Residents described Celina as a sweet, friendly child. One of Celina's best friends, 11-year-old Makayla Riendeau, said Celina loves her mother and likes her stepfather and wouldn't run away. She said Celina is very athletic, is a stickler about getting her school work done on time and loves having friends over to her house.

"She's a very good friend, and she never lets anybody down," Makayla said.

By Wednesday afternoon, family members and friends were camped out on the porch of the three-story wooden home and shooed away reporters. A senior assistant attorney general, Jane Young, entered the home with several officers about 2 p.m. and came out with a woman, whom they walked to a nearby office building that served as a command post. Young, whose agency has taken over the investigation, declined to comment.

At midday Wednesday, about a mile north of town, five Fish and Game Department officers searched the woods behind an apartment. They carried bags and boxes, but it was unclear if they collected anything.
