I couldn't decide between Kanye West, Taylor Swift or Roger Goodell, so I wrote in "Bill Cosby" for my #1 pick.

My #1 pick never gets chosen by the TIME editors. With my luck, this will be the year that it does.

Seriously, I think Prime Minister Modi is a solid choice.

2014 People of the Year

Good choice, IMO. 44 TIME mag.

Among those honored:

-- Dr. Jerry Brown is a Liberian surgeon who converted his hospital's chapel into one of the country's first treatment centers. The center's reception area, where Brown gets dressed, is a bare room, lit by a single bulb, Nickerson, the photographer, said.

-- Salome Karwah is an Ebola survivor who lost both parents to the disease and undertook the task of counseling patients in Liberia. Nickerson recalled how the Doctors Without Borders caregiver appeared to be a typical young woman, dressed nicely and a little nervous about being photographed. "But then, she put on her scrubs. ... She became very calm, a little bit introverted," the photographer said.

--Foday Gallah saw a sick child was distressed and felt he had to do something. So he picked the kid up to comfort him. And with that act of kindness, the 37-year-old ambulance supervisor in Monrovia, Liberia, contracted Ebola himself.

-- Ella Watson-Stryker is a Doctors Without Borders health promoter who has been in West Africa since March. The American was uneasy during the 10 minutes it took to shoot her photo, Nickerson said. "She was distracted, she wanted to do other things."

-- Dr. Kent Brantly became the first American infected while running a treatment center in Monrovia. Because he is a religious man, Time shot him at his church in Fort Worth, Texas. "Kent was working in West Africa doing a lot of hard, selfless work to help people out," photographer Bryan Schutmaat said.

The magazine's readers voted for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to receive the title, but the TIME editors' decision is based on their view of "the person or persons who most affected the news and our lives, for good or ill, and embodied what was important about the year."

Among the others considered for "Person of the Year" honors were Russian President Vladimir Putin, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, and the protesters in Ferguson, Missouri. Other finalists included singer Taylor Swift, Chinese Internet tycoon Jack Ma, Apple CEO Tim Cook and Iraqi Kurdish leader Masoud Barzani.

RE: TIME MAG PERSON OF THE YEAR

2015's PERSON OF THE YEAR IS...

Angie baby, she's a special lady. I admire Merkel, but the choice kinda surprises me.

[Image: 2F344E1300000578-0-image-a-41_1449666235920.jpg]

Angela Merkel, the 61-year-old German Chancellor, topped a list of finalists that included US tycoon Donald Trump, the Black Lives Matter protest movement and Uber's CEO Travis Kalanick.

ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, described by Time as a 'brooding muezzin of death', was second on the list.

Merkel was praised by the magazine for her leadership on everything from Syrian refugees to the Greek debt crisis.

I was so relieved it wasn't Donald.

This was being discussed on the Today Show yesterday and I saw the finalists and thought I'd rather have it be a terrorist over Donald Trump. Jesus.

Trump tweeted this after the Person of the Year announcement:

"I told you @TIME Magazine would never pick me as person of the year despite being the big favorite They picked person who is ruining Germany." hah He's something else.

Anyway, it's the first time a woman has won the award in 29 years. The other individual women to win were Wallis Simpson (1936), Queen Elizabeth II (1952) and Corazon Aquino (1986).

These were the runner ups for 2015 Person of The Year:

-Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi - head of the Islamic State militant group

-Donald Trump - business magnate seeking Republican nomination as US presidential candidate

-Black Lives Matter - activist group campaigning against violence towards black people, notably in the US

-Hassan Rouhani - president of Iran since 2013

-Travis Kalanick - US entrepreneur, founder of the Uber transportation network firm

-Caitlyn Jenner - born Bruce Jenner, became 1976 Olympic decathlon champion, officially changed name and gender in 2015

RE: TIME MAG PERSON OF THE YEAR

Carsman also mentioned this in the Trump for President thread.

The 2016 Person of the Year is..................Donald Trump. Quite rightly, in my opinion. I don't see how the award could really have gone to anyone else considering the media exposure and the domestic and global political impact of Trump in 2016.

This is the 90th time we have named the person who had the greatest influence, for better or worse, on the events of the year. So which is it this year: Better or worse? The challenge for Donald Trump is how profoundly the country disagrees about the answer.

It’s hard to measure the scale of his disruption. This real estate baron and casino owner turned reality-TV star and provocateur—never a day spent in public office, never a debt owed to any interest besides his own—now surveys the smoking ruin of a vast political edifice that once housed parties, pundits, donors, pollsters, all those who did not see him coming or take him seriously. Out of this reckoning, Trump is poised to preside, for better or worse.

This year's runner-ups were............
--HILLARY CLINTON
--THE HACKERS
--RECEP TAYYIP ERDOGAN (President of Turkey)
--THE CRISPR PIONEERS (awesome medical scientists who, in only four years, have succeeded in finding and altering DNA in any species in order to help cure disease)
--BEYONCÉ

And so it goes...

This thread has been running for 5 years now; interesting reading it back.

I actually had Oscar Pistorius on my list of candidates for 2012. hah

I went back and read it after reading that ^^^^^. Hard to believe it began after the last election. I can't even really recall much of that.

I saw I was glad they didn't choose trump last year. I preferred a terrorist over him. hah

RE: TIME MAG PERSON OF THE YEAR

2017 Person/People of the Year Nominations

Time unveiled the 10 finalists in the running to be named 2017 Person of the Year, listed below:

-President Trump,
-Colin Kaepernick,
-North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un,
-Special Counsel Robert Mueller,
-Chinese President Xi Jinping,
-Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman,
-The #MeToo movement,
-“Wonder Woman” director Patty Jenkins,
-Dreamers (undocumented immigrants eligible to the Obama-era's Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals),
-Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos

I figured that Ronan Farrow would be on the list, but the #MeToo movement probably makes more sense.

The title can be given to a person or a group of people. Time has named a Person of the Year since 1927 basing its choice on how much the person or group has influenced news in the past year, for better or for worse.

Time is expected to unveil the 2017 Person of the Year on Wednesday.

RE: TIME MAG PERSON OF THE YEAR

I’d vote for Lynda Carter, circa 1979, as Wonder Woman.

Winner, winner, chicken dinner!
