police arrest three suspects in stabbing death of Hyde Park pizza delivery man
September 4, 2010 03:33 PM
BOSTON GLOBE

Boston police have charged two teenagers and a 20-year-old with the murder of a 58-year-old pizza delivery man who was stabbed to death while making a delivery in Hyde Park Wednesday night.

Michel Andre St. Jean, 20, of Hyde Park; Alexander Emmanuel Gallett, 18, of Hyde Park; and Yamiley Mathurin, 17, of Mattapan each face charges of murder, armed robbery, and armed breaking and entering of a dwelling, police and prosecutors said at a news conference today.

The slaying of Richel Nova of Hyde Park was "chilling in its callousness and violence," Suffolk District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said in a statement. Boston Police Commissioner Edward F. Davis said the suspects were "vicious thugs" who had shown Nova no mercy.

Nova was lured to a vacant house at 742 Hyde Park Ave. late Wednesday, where the suspects allegedly robbed and fatally stabbed him, Boston police have said.

Authorities have said the suspects had placed an order with Domino's and gave the address of the house. After Nova was stabbed, the three allegedly drove off in his Subaru Legacy, which was recovered Thursday at church parking lot on River Street.

Nova was an immigrant from the Dominican Republic who lived alone and worked several jobs. He lived about 3 miles from the house where he was killed.

"Richel Nova was a hard-working man making an honest living to provide for his family when he was preyed upon by three vicious thugs. For a small amount of money, these suspects committed unspeakable acts of violence, while showing Mr. Nova no mercy. The criminal justice system should equally show no mercy in determining their punishment," Commissioner Davis said in a statement.

Davis said at a news conference that the three were arrested Friday night. He would not give the exact amount of money that was stolen, but described it as a little more than $100.

While other people were planning barbecues and going to the beach, the trio were plotting this attack, Conley said.

After the attack, "They fled in his car, taking his money and the food that he brought," Conley said.

The officials said detectives had received community cooperation and developed "substantial evidence" and the trio were arrested on the basis of statements by the suspects, physical evidence, and surveillance video.

so one of his cartoons is causing a stink in mexico,
it pissed me off too because it depicts cruelty to eagles.

Mexico City, Mexico (CNN) -- An American's cartoon showing the eagle in the Mexican flag dead in a pool of blood is drawing criticism.

The sketch created by political cartoonist Daryl Cagle depicts the green, white, and red Mexican flag with a bullet-riddled eagle sprawled in the center of the emblem. Mexico's coat of arms includes the eagle perched on a prickly pear cactus, devouring a snake.

Cagle says he created the cartoon to depict the violence rampant in parts of Mexico.

"Editorial cartoonists look for readily recognizable metaphors and that's an obvious one for Mexico," says Cagle.

But the cartoon has offended many Mexicans who feel their national symbol is off limits, especially to foreign cartoonists.

Many readers reacted angrily when the cartoon was displayed on the front page of newspapers.

"It is a shame that a patriotic symbol like our flag, which is so beautiful to me, can be mocked by a stupid cartoonist," wrote a reader to the Mexico City newspaper El Universal. "I think there are many other ways to graphically protest what's happening in our country."

Mexican cartoonist Paco Calderón reprinted Cagle's cartoon on the Reforma newspaper, adding his own comment.

"I'm not offended by the cartoon. I'm offended by reality and the huarache-wearing Taliban members," he said. Huarache is a type of a Mexican sandal and Calderón was using the reference to talk about members of the seven drug cartels terrorizing Mexico.

Even President Felipe Calderón admits the situation in his country is dire.

"As we all know, we face unscrupulous criminals with enormous economic capacity and great firepower," said the president in his fourth state-of-the-nation speech Thursday. "I am fully aware that in the past year the problem of violence has risen." NO SHIT!

Cagle admits he's somewhat surprised by the reaction to his cartoon. "This one has been a little unusual in that it has been splashed all over the press in Mexico and I've been hearing quite a lot about it," he says.

"All I was looking to here is make a statement that the violence in Mexico is terrible and make it visually compelling."
As States begin to try and round out their budgets towards the end of the year we may see more of this going on the ballots in the November election. Disguised as casinos and a needfull money making enterprize, it may become an issue in who is awarded the contracts and who will gain. I believe that when you have government oversight in an enterprize that just steams with corruption the end result is never good for the common man. If the profits were used for education only it would be a different matter but where will the states profits go? I have seen lotteries profits once slated for education get diverted down the line and years till it is not helping the thing it was created to help. This is the thing I hate about these needful things*****

CHICAGO – With less than two weeks before Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn awards a lucrative, first-of-its-kind contract for the private management of the state's $2 billion-a-year lottery, some are criticizing the selection process as too secretive and questioning whether it favors one powerful bidder.

Lottery officials have released little information, refusing until this week to name any companies that bid for the 10-year contract by the July 30 deadline and declining to identify members of the committee reviewing the bids. On Monday, officials named only the two finalists: Northstar Lottery Group, a partnership of three companies that each already hold Illinois Lottery contracts, and Camelot Group, which runs the United Kingdom's lottery.

The "largely invisible" process has fueled suspicions in a state with a reputation for political dealmaking, said Andy Shaw, executive director of the Better Government Association.

"Widespread fears of this being a wired, inside deal are very legitimate," Shaw said. "This is Illinois, and three connected groups teamed up to leverage their clout; that has set off alarm bells."

The two bidders must submit final proposals on Friday that will outline how they would be paid, officials said. They will give public presentations on their bids Wednesday — one week before Quinn must choose a winner for a contract that some estimate could be worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

Lottery spokesman Tracy Owens said information on all companies that bid or expressed initial interest will not be released until Quinn makes his selection because revealing such information before that would "potentially undermine the integrity of the process and potentially taint the outcome."

Quinn defended his administration Friday, saying lottery officials have followed the law "to the T" and have encouraged vigorous competition.

But observers say the names of all bidders and evaluation committee members should be public.

"The fact that it's not gives the appearance of impropriety," said Joan Zielinski, a lecturer in marketing at Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management and director of the New Jersey lottery in 1985 and 1986. "Transparency does not taint the process."

Publicly naming bidders after proposals are received is routine in many states. In New Jersey, for example, officials said bidders are identified before the proposals are evaluated. And Texas this summer named three companies that bid for its lottery contract, with a decision expected this month.

Concerns about potential impropriety are particularly acute in Illinois, which is trying to shed a reputation for corruption after its previous two governors were convicted of felonies.

What's more, Illinois would be the first state to entirely privatize the management and marketing of its lottery. The move was mandated by legislators as a way to help boost revenue and attract new players — which would mean more money for schools and capital improvement projects. The state would retain ownership and regulatory oversight.

Such a pioneering move should have made officials redouble efforts to conduct business in the open, said Ralph Martire, executive director of the Chicago-based Center for Tax and Budget Accountability.

Martire said he does not question the integrity of the Quinn administration, but "whether or not the winner is the right one — and it may be — I think every opportunity to be more transparent and accountable should be taken."

Some prospective bidders complained the state all but guaranteed few bids.

Greece-based Intralot, one of the world's largest lottery vendors, said this week that its bid was eliminated without explanation last month, and suggested the decision "presents a situation where healthy competition that would result in true value for the state is reduced or eliminated entirely."

Michael Jones, Illinois Lottery director from 1981-85, said he put together a group to bid for the contract but decided against it because of what he considered unreasonable requirements. Among other things, bidders had to have experience operating or managing a lottery, gaming company or comparable business with revenues over $1 billion and had to prove they had $20 million in unencumbered cash.

Northstar Lottery Group is widely believed to be the front-runner.

Its partners include two companies that normally are fierce competitors: GTECH, which already holds the Illinois contract for lottery machines, and Scientific Games, which supplies the state's instant tickets. They are among several companies that dominate the lucrative and highly competitive national and state lottery contracts, a business that often leads to accusations of insider politics and cozy relationships with government officials.

Northstar's advertising partner, Energy BBDP, also has a contract with the Illinois Lottery.

It's not surprising that only a few companies might be qualified to run a lottery as large as Illinois' or that states might favor companies with whom they've already worked, said David Schwartz, director of the Center for Gaming Research at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

"Nobody wants to turn over a billion-dollar-a-year business to someone learning as they do it," said Schwartz. "But in general, sunlight is the best disinfectant, especially when you're talking about something that's going to be a monopoly and important to the economic health of the state."

Shaw, of the Better Government Association, suggested an award is not a sure thing: Lottery officials don't have to make a recommendation, the governor could reject the recommendation or he could ask for more time.

"It would not be the worst thing to go back to drawing board and do this again," Shaw said. "I would rather see a do-over than a mistake."

Cammie King Conlon, the former child actress who portrayed the doomed daughter of Rhett Butler and Scarlett O'Hara in "Gone With the Wind," has died at the age of 76.

She died of lung cancer Wednesday morning at her Fort Bragg home on California's north coast, said friend Bruce Lewis. Her son, Matthew Ned Conlon, was by her side.

Conlon was picked to play the small, but pivotal role of Bonnie Blue Butler in the 1939 Civil War epic at age 4. Her character's death in a fall from a pony irrevocably damages Rhett and Scarlett's tumultuous marriage.

Conlon also voiced the young doe Faline in Walt Disney's "Bambi" three years later. It would be her final film role.

"My mother decided she wanted me to have a normal childhood," she wrote on her blog, which talked about her brief career and a memoir she published last year on her "Gone With the Wind" experience. She often joked with interviewers that she had "peaked at 5".

The Los Angeles native graduated from the University of Southern California with a degree in communications and spent two years editing California Pictorial magazine. She moved to Mendocino County 30 years ago, working as director of the Kelly House museum and as a publicist for the Mendocino Coast Chamber of Commerce and the Little River Inn.

Conlon stayed in touch with her "Gone With the Wind" family. On Sunday night, she took a call from Olivia de Havilland, who played Scarlett's sweet-hearted nemesis Melanie in the film, her son said.

"It's amazing because she is so much more than Bonnie Blue Butler, but ... that is what she is remembered for, and it's a pretty great thing to be remembered for," Matthew Conlon said.

"Nobody told it better than Mom -- when you debut in 'Gone with the Wind,' it's downhill."
She told the Santa Rosa Press Democrat last year that she had few clear memories of her time on the studio lot that served as the set for the fictional plantation Tara.

One was watching her stunt double for the pony scene, a male dwarf, smoking a cigarette while dressed in a reproduction of her riding habit costume. Another was being scratched by Clark Gable's mustache in the scene where Rhett Butler hugs and kisses his cherished daughter.

"As the years have gone by, I realize it's an honor, and it's so humbling," she had said. "I had nothing to do with it. I was 5. They said 'Stand here. Do this.' And yet it's resulted in this incredible experience."

Conlon spent much her adult life gamely reprising her Bonnie Blue days for "Gone With the Wind" enthusiasts. She appeared at parades, retrospectives, museum exhibits and anniversary celebrations for the film in both Georgia, where the movie was set, and in California.

Just last year, she donned her hoop skirt and petticoat again to visit a middle school that was studying the Civil War.

"It wasn't her whole life, but she had a lot of fun with it," Lewis said.

Conlon is survived by her son and a daughter, Katie Conlon Byrne. A memorial service is planned for next week in Fort Bragg. Another will be held in Los Angeles on Sept. 22 and a third at a later date in Marietta, Ga., home of the Gone With the Wind Museum.

thankfully nobody killed. fire is not out, and there is an "oil sheen" on the water.

(CNN) -- A well connected to an oil and gas production platform caught on fire in the Gulf of Mexico Thursday, engulfing the vessel in flames about 100 miles off the central coast of Louisiana and forcing 13 people overboard, Gov. Bobby Jindal said.

All 13 people have been accounted for, said Petty Officer Bill Colclough of the Coast Guard. They were found floating on a raft, officials said. Mariner Energy, which owns the Vermilion Oil Rig 380, said none of the crew members was hurt in the incident, despite earlier reports of a single injured worker.

Also, Mariner indicated that the fire -- which was first reported to the Coast Guard by workers on a nearby rig around 9:20 a.m. (10:20 a.m. ET) -- was not sparked by an explosion. It started at one of the platform's seven active wells, the company said, though its cause is under investigation.

The company said an initial flyover of the site indicated "no hydrocarbon spill." However, Coast Guard Petty Officer Elizabeth Bordelon said there is a sheen on the water at the site of the platform, measuring about 100-feet wide and stretching for one mile.

The fire at the platform is not out yet, but it has been contained, she said.

Jindal said that Mariner has told him that all seven wells have been closed off and that what is burning now is from fuel in storage, and not from an active leak.

During the last week of August, production from the platform averaged approximately 9.2 million cubic feet of natural gas a day and 1,400 barrels (58,800 gallons) of oil, the company said.

David Reed, a paramedic on board a nearby oil rig, said he suddenly saw "a bunch of smoke" from the direction of the Vermilion platform, and radios in his rig's control room started "lighting up like a Christmas tree" soon after.

The first report of the fire came from Rotorcraft Leasing, a company that provides helicopter services for the industry, the Coast Guard said.

sickening. they were beaten to death with a pipe and slashed with a scythe. by their own son and his old bag of a 46 year-old "girlfriend".

DALLAS, Ore. -- Two people are in custody after a husband and wife were found dead in their home in what appears to have been a double homicide, according to investigators.

The couple's bodies were discovered Tuesday morning on their farm they called Abundant Life Farm. Officers were responding to a report of an unconscious person at their home about three miles south of Dallas.

The victims have been identified as 61-year-old David Scott Jondle and 58-year-old Marilyn Ruth Jondle. Police say the couple's youngest son, 20-year-old Andrew Jondle of Salem, beat them to death.

The alleged killer's father was found in a garage, and his mother in the house.

The couple's son and his girlfriend, 46-year-old Cindy Lou Beck of Salem, were later located in Salem. Both were taken into custody after being questioning by authorities in Polk County.

Andrew Jondle faces aggravated murder charges. His bail has not yet been set.

Beck faces a charge of hindering prosecution, with additional charges pending. Her bail was set at $5,000.

Investigators said they believe the killings are tied to a conflict between father and son.

"We got information from family and friends that there had been some relations strained between the father and the son," said Polk County Sheriff Bob Wolfe. "That led us to the son, who was located at his apartment in south Salem."

David Powell, Andrew Jondle's neighbor, said he saw Andrew Jondle and Beck arrive home at 2 a.m. Tuesday.

"He sat right here (pointing to a chair outside an apartment unit), and he basically curled up a little bit and had a hoodie on and was shaking really bad," Powell said.

The Polk County sheriff said investigators decided during the questioning process to charge Beck with hindering prosecution. Both are expected to make their first court appearances on Wednesday.

David Jondle left behind work as a software engineer in California about 10 years ago, giving up office work so he and his wife could live a simpler life running their farm. They had customers in Salem, Beaverton and Portland.

SALEM, Ore., Sept. 1 (UPI) -- An Oregon man was in jail Wednesday on charges he killed his parents on their farm outside Salem, the Polk County sheriff announced.

Andrew Jondle, 20, was charged with murder in the deaths of David and Marilyn Jondle, two former California residents who moved to the scenic Dallas area in 2000 to take up sustainable farming.

Jondle's 46-year-old girlfriend, Cindy Lou Beck, was also in custody for allegedly hindering a prosecution and conspiracy to commit murder.

The (Portland) Oregonian said the pair was picked up Tuesday at their Salem apartment after the bodies were discovered at the Abundant Life Farm by a delivery man, Sheriff Bob Wolfe said.

Neighbors of the accused couple told the Salem Statesman Journal the pair had been causing problems in recent months, including belligerent behavior toward residents and their children. They said police had been called three or four times in August.

They said police had been called three or four times in August.

this is happening right now...this guy has taken hostages at the Discovery Channel. i don't know what he wants yet, will try to find out...

Officials: Suspect holding hostages at Discovery Channel

Authorities have identified the man holding hostages in the Discovery Channel headquarters as James Lee.
[Updated at 3:31 p.m.] Montgomery County, Maryland, Fire Rescue Chief Ricard Bowers said the gunman at the Discovery Channel's headquarters is holding hostage more than one person.

Bowers said about 3:20 p.m. that negotiations have been going on for nearly an hour, "and we will continue that for as long as we can."

[Updated at 3:17 p.m.] The man suspected of taking at least one hostage at the Discovery Channel's headquarters entered the building's main entrance "wearing what appeared to be metallic canister devices on his front and back," a police spokesman said Wednesday. "He also pulled a handgun out and was waving a handgun."

Silver Spring Police Chief. Chief J. Thomas Manger said police haven't confirmed whether any shots were fired inside the building.

Manger said Lee has remained in first floor area of the Discovery building, where 1,900 employees work.

"We believe that most of them are out," Manger said. "There are a small number of hostages with him."

[Updated at 3:10 p.m.]

James Lee, the man suspected of taking a hostage at the Discovery Channel headquarters, is an environmental protester who has been publishing criticisms of the network, according to a senior law enforcement official close to the investigation.

An angry manifesto posted on a website called SaveThePlanetProtest.com repeatedly refers to humans as "filth" and demands that the Discovery Channel
"stop encouraging the birth of any more parasitic human infants."

"Civilization must be exposed for the filth it is," the 1,149-word statement says.

"Humans are the most destructive, filthy, pollutive creatures around and are wrecking what's left of the planet with their false morals and breeding culture," it continues.

Lee also blasts immigration, farming, weapons of mass destruction, automotive pollution, "and the whole blasted human economy."

He demands that the Discovery Channel broadcast daily prime-time shows devoted to "solutions to save the planet," perhaps in a game-show format, insisting "Make it interesting so people watch and apply solutions!!!!"

Many of Lee's comments are directed at "the media," saying "You can reach enough people. It's your responsibility because you reach so many minds!!!"

"The world needs TV shows that DEVELOP solutions to the problems that humans are causing, not stupify the people into destroying the world. Not
encouraging them to breed more environmentally harmful humans," the manifesto says.

"These are the demands and sayings of Lee," the manifesto concludes.
BY JASON KOTOWSKI, Californian staff writer
Aug 30 2010 07:26 PM

Terri Terrazas says there was a strong odor in their neighborhood on the 4300 block of La Mirada Drive in Bakersfield before the body of a woman was found dead in the chimney at 4309 La Mirada Drive on Saturday.

Emergency personnel had to break down a chimney at 4309 La Mirada Drive in Bakersfield to recover the body of a woman that had died inside the chimney.
Dr. Jacquelyn Kotarac had been missing since last week, a day after she went to the house of a man whom she had been dating, Bakersfield police Sgt. Mary DeGeare said. Kotarac went to the man’s house in the 4300 block of La Mirada Drive Wednesday evening and was reported missing by her office staff Thursday morning, DeGeare said.

DeGeare said she wasn’t sure what the status of the relationship was — whether they had been broken up or not — when Kotarac went to the house. The man, however, didn’t want to see her and left the home unnoticed to avoid a confrontation as she tried to force her way inside. DeGeare did not release the man’s name, but the resident of that house is listed as William Moodie and neighbors confirmed that was the name of the man living there.

On Saturday, a woman at the house noticed a bad odor, DeGeare said. The woman, who was checking on the fish tank, investigated and saw fluids in the fireplace. She got a flashlight and looked up the flue and realized there was a body stuck there, DeGeare said.

Bakersfield firefighters spent five hours dismantling the chimney and flue from the outside of the home from Saturday to early Sunday to get to the body, DeGeare said. Detectives initially investigated the death as suspicious, but police said Monday that all the evidence indicates Kotarac voluntarily went to the roof, removed the chimney cap and slid down the flue feet first.

A sign posted inside Kotarac’s San Dimas Street office Monday said the office was closed for the day. Callers were transferred to the office’s answering service.

Neighbors of the house on La Mirada Drive were shocked.

“We never expected she was in the chimney,” said Victor Munoz, who lives next door to the house where the body was removed.

Munoz said a purse and other belongings had been found in his neighbor’s back yard earlier in the week. Munoz said Moodie had dated a woman that Munoz knew as “Jackie.”

He said he never heard the two fighting or noticed anything else indicating there had been a bad breakup.

Munoz said neighbors of Moodie had been on the lookout for the woman, thinking she might may have been abducted because her belongings were found outdoors and she was missing.

Neighbor Terri Terrazas said a woman who was a doctor had lived at Moodie’s house at one time. She had heard they had broken up but remained friends.

Terrazas said her husband noticed a terrible smell coming from the house Friday evening, but he thought it was just trash left out.

She said she was saddened by what had happened.

“I don’t care who you are — a doctor, lawyer, garbageman — I think you can snap over any kind of heartache,” Terrazas said.

Kotarac practiced internal medicine and her license was renewed and current, according to the Medical Board of California website. She graduated from UCLA School of Medicine in 1991.

John Croson, a patient of Kotarac’s for at least 10 years, said he felt sick when he read about her death. He said Kotarac was, in his experience, the rare doctor who took the time to really listen to her patients.

“She was just a really nice lady and I had 100 percent confidence with everything she did,” Croson said.

Another patient, John M. Ulman II, described Kotarac as a “true professional.” He said her death struck him as a close, personal loss.

“I’m just totally deflated because she was such a sweet person and she cared about her patients,” Ulman said.

Kotarac had some unpaid taxes at the time of her death.

Federal tax liens totaling more than $194,000 were filed in December and January, public notices filed with the Kern County Recorder’s office show, and state tax collectors in April recorded a lien against Kotarac for more than $31,000.

Kotarac did save her house from foreclosure this spring.

An $800,000 loan against the home, on Raphael Avenue in the northeast Tuscany tract, defaulted in July 2009. Last November, the custom home was slated to sell at public auction on City Hall steps with more than $839,000 owed against it. But by March this year, the default notice was canceled, indicating Kotarac was up to date with payments.

In addition to tax problems, Kotarac also had a legal issue to deal with. She had been scheduled to be arraigned Aug. 27 on a misdemeanor charge of defrauding an innkeeper of $400 or less, according to the Kern County Superior Court website.
I haven't taken the time to investigate any of this because frankly, I just don't care enough. All I care about is that this is just an opportunity to slam that dumb bitch, Sarah Palin.

Apparently she has tweeted that she thinks that when the Prez has his speech tonight that Obama should recognize Dumbya for the role he played in the Iraq war & to give him his due credit.

i watched her trial on Court TV, it was riveting. a real soap opera. i wonder if she offed herself, she was only 42. cold ruthless bitch killed 2 men with antifreeze...one a policeman, one a firefighter. cunt. dead cunt now.

ATLANTA -- Lynn Turner, who was convicted in 2007 of killing her husband and boyfriend with antifreeze, has died in prison.

Officials said Turner, 42, died in Metro State Prison in Atlanta on Monday.

A release from corrections officials said Turner was found in her cell at 6:55 a.m. Monday and that prison medical staff and EMS crews were unable to revive her.

The cause of death is under investigation by the GBI Medical Examiner's office.

The trial found that Turner murdered her husband, Cobb County police officer Maurice Turner in 1995, and in 2001, killed her boyfriend, Forsyth County firefighter Randy Thompson -- both by poisoning with antifreeze.

She was serving a life sentence for Thompson's murder.
