"We're so sorry"....You're so indicted....Move over Jesse Jr. & Sandi

Former Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell (Republican) and his wife have been indicted on federal corruption charges.

Peter Carr, a spokesman for the U.S. Justice Department, says McDonnell and his wife, Maureen, were indicted Tuesday. The 14-count indictment includes conspiracy, wire fraud and other charges.

McDonnell left office earlier this month after four years in the governor's office. Virginia law limits governors to a single term.

A federal investigation overshadowed the final months in office for this once-rising star of the Republican Party, with authorities looking into gifts he and his family received from a political donor.

In July, McDonnell apologized and said he had returned more than $120,000 in loans and other gifts from Johnnie Williams, the CEO of pharmaceutical company Star Scientific.

McDonnell’s indictment came after federal prosecutors investigated whether he and wife Maureen gave special treatment to Star Scientific Inc., a dietary supplement-maker whose chief executive helped cover catering costs for their daughter’s wedding and gave the first couple other gifts, including a Rolex watch for the governor.

McDonnell apologized in July and said he had returned more than $120,000 in loans, as well as other gifts. He repeated in interviews that he had done nothing illegal on Star Scientific’s behalf, but said he’d do “things differently today than choices I made a couple of years ago.”

Maureen came under fire as well for being paid $36,000 in 2012 to advise the charitable arm of a Virginia coal company.

Sure is a crummy thing to do especially when he knew it was wrong. I'm not saying what he did was right but at least he did not take it from taxpayers and in the amounts that Jesse did. He paid it back also, and I think Jesse is still paying. And yes I do believe that republicans are just as corrupt as democrats. Its just that this does not look like jail time.

I'm not quite sure about the amount of $$$ involved with McDonnell yet and whether it's less or more than what Jackson stole. Not all of the details are out yet in McDonnell's case.

But, I agree with you that there are differences between the cases, and that corruption is bi-partisan.

I also agree that it's less likely McDonnell and wife will get jail time because they've paid it back (at least, what we know about so far).

McDonnell's case is more like John Edwards' case, IMO. "Gifts". It'll be interesting to see if it goes to trial like Edwards' case did, if McDonnell and wife plead out and get some kinda deal, or if it gets dropped altogether down line.

I'm glad to see political corruption cases being pursued more vigorously these days, in any case.

We have the same shit in the UK.

Government ministers award private contracts to companies and it transpires oh! They just happened to be a shareholder in those companies! What a startling coincidence!

And of course we had the expenses scandal where some politicians were claiming public money to buy shit (in one case £12,000 for an ornamental island in a fucking duck pond!) And claim it as an essential expense of being an MP.

Twats.

UPDATES:

While Toronto mayor Rob Ford (pictured right) continues partying, with a new video of him drinking beer hitting the press, he still maintains a lot of support in the city and is working on his re-election campaign for next year.

Florida congressman Trey Radel (pictured left), on the other hand, has tendered his resignation.

Snip:
In Oct. 2013, Radel was caught buying cocaine at a Dupont Circle restaurant from an undercover federal agent. He didn’t tell his colleagues or House Republican leadership about the incident. But on Nov. 20, it became public when Radel appeared in D.C. court to plead guilty to charges that he possessed cocaine. While Radel was in rehab, his staff — many of them junior aides — kept his office afloat.

Top Florida GOP leaders — including the governor and senior party officials — publicly called on Radel to resign. He ignored the calls initially, and returned to Washington at the beginning of January. The House Ethics Committee launched its own investigation of Radel.

Radel just sent a letter to Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) announcing his resignation, saying it “is my belief that professionally I cannot fully and effectively serve as a United States Representative to the place I love and call home, Southwest Florida.” He said that 2014 has already “been tremendously positive as I focus on my health, family and faith.”

His resignation is effective today at 6:30 p.m. It’s up to Florida Republican Gov. Rick Scott to schedule a special election for Radel’s seat. His southwest Florida district is solidly Republican — Mitt Romney won the district with 61 percent of the vote.

That's very similar to the allegations in the McDonnell case. They pleaded "not guilty" on Friday.

They sought loans, accepted payments for their daughter's wedding, enjoyed expense-paid vacations, etc...from the owner of a medical research lab with state contracts pending or in work. The couple was reportedly in deep financial debt while McDonnell was the governor.

Word on Capitol Hill, via press from "unnamed sources" there, is that the McDonnells refused a plea deal that would have spared them the possibility of jail time.

The couple released statements essentially claiming that none of the $120k they received affected the governorship or the awarding of contracts/funds to the donor's company. Instead, it was all private and, regrettably, a result of Mrs. McDonnell's poor judgment in pursuing a friendship with the donor and his family - nothing illegal.

So, they remain charged with 14 fraud-related counts.

The federal judge warned both sets of lawyers not to discuss the case publicly; he wants it tried in the courtroom, not the public/press. (I expect to see a lot of "leaks" from "anonymous insiders close to the case" as this plays out.)

Nagin's pleas for federal help for his flooded city caught the nation's [i]attention after Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Now out of office, he's pleaded not guilty to federal charges of bribery, money laundering, fraud and filing false tax returns.

Prosecutors accused him of being at the center of "a bribery and kickback scheme" in which he allegedly received checks, cash, wire transfers, personal services and free travel from businessmen seeking contracts and favorable treatment from the city.

Prosecutors accuse Nagin of taking more than $200,000 in bribes, while his family members allegedly received a vacation in Hawaii; first-class airfare to Jamaica; private jet travel and a limousine for New York City; and cellular phone service.

In exchange, businesses that coughed up cash for Nagin and his family won more than $5 million in city contracts, according to an indictment brought in January 2013.

Two businessmen named in the charges have pleaded guilty to making payoffs and are cooperating with prosecutors. A third was found guilty of bribing two Nagin staffers, while another admitted to paying kickbacks to the sheriff of nearby Plaquemines Parish after winning a project management contract there.

For now, the courtroom is closed to public and press, but the judge may choose to open it once jury selection is completed.

^^^ Former New Orleans mayor Ray Nagin was found guilty on 20 of the 21 Bribery and Fraud counts against him.

It didn't take long for federal prosecutors to prove that Nagin's "not guilty" pleas were fiction.

The prosecution presented businessman after businessman who testified to bribing Nagin for city contracts and favorable treatment; Nagin received over $200,000 in illegal monies and gifts during his time as mayor.

Nagin tried the ever effective, "I don't recall" game during his testimony, but he was basically obliterated on the stand. The jury didn't buy his claims of memory lapse.

Sentencing has been set for June 11th, which is Nagin's 58th birthday. He faces a maximum of 20 years under federal sentencing guidelines.

I think this bitch is cracked, but she actually just won the GOP nomination to challenge Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.) in the Chicago-area 9th Congressional District.

She believes storms are God's way of chastising people. Last year, Atanus proclaimed that "God is angry. We are provoking him with abortions and same-sex marriage and civil unions. Same-sex activity is going to increase AIDS. If it's in our military, it will weaken our military. We need to respect God."

Autism and dementia are also the punishments of an angry God, according to sexy Susanne.

Sound kinda nutty? Well, it did to me, at least. BUT, then she clarified her position in January and it all makes perfect sense now. According to Atanus' revised statement: "Everybody knows that God controls weather. God is super angry. Gay marriage is not appropriate, and it doesn't look right, and it breeds AIDS."

If she wins the election, I'll be very surprised -- more surprised than the fact that she won the nomination in the first place even.

Still kind of an improvement and not that big a deal -- she only started with one "ta" anyhow.

And, actually, now that you've removed it, her name is surely more befitting.

There 's a radio commercial that runs often on the Sirius CNN channel around here for a lending or credit relief company (something like that). The commercial ends with this very random statement "we give all the glory to God". It's weird and so unexpected...the owners must be religious nuts.

California Senators are quite the perps lately. The gun ban that was passed does not apply to the ones that wrote the law.

SAN FRANCISCO/SACRAMENTO (Reuters) - A prominent California lawmaker was arrested on Wednesday in an FBI sweep that netted 26 people, a high-profile case that could affect statewide elections and brings to three the number of Democratic state senators who face criminal charges this year.

Senator Leland Yee, a former San Francisco supervisor and one-time mayoral candidate, was criminally charged in federal court in San Francisco with two felony counts of conspiring to import and traffic in firearms, and six corruption counts.
