Shawn Walter Bair, 22 - shooter; killed by police at the scene

Elkhart police received a call about a shooter at Martin's Super Market about 10 p.m. Wednesday, Indiana State Police Sgt. Trent Smith said at a news conference early Thursday. Elkhart is in far northern Indiana, just south of the Michigan border, and about 15 miles east of South Bend.

The gunman used a semi-automatic handgun to shoot and kill a woman, then walked to another aisle and shot and killed another woman, Smith said. One victim Krystle Dikes, worked at the store. The other (not identified) was a shopper who appeared to be in her 40s, he said. They were found about 12 aisles apart.

RIP Krystle Dikes, 20 - murder victim

Two police officers, who were on a routine call nearby, were able to quickly respond to the scene, Smith said.

The shooter was pointing his gun at a third person when the officers found him in a store aisle, Smith said. Elkhart police then shot and killed the gunman, who Smith said lived in the area and was in his early 20s. A large knife was also found near the man's body.

The identities of the women and gunman were not released but Smith said there was no indication that the shooter knew the victims. "At this time, it appears that it's just random," he said. He did not elaborate.

Smith also said that there was "no doubt" that the officers' quick response saved lives. The Indiana State Police will investigate because the Elkhart Police Department was involved in the shooting, Smith said.

"We do have a lot of things to look at as far as video surveillance," Smith said, noting that state and city police were also interviewing witnesses.

A couple of Bair's many Facebook rants:

Let me know when you get to the really important stuff about the case.

You know, the exact make and model of the gun the shooter used.

Yeah, I wanted to see it or learn more about it, for legal purposes.

I have a decent idea now of the weapon used and what's required for it to have been legally owned by the shooter's parents. I'm sure we'll learn later whether they were in fact compliant with the laws.

If the gun was not legal (within legal length specifications) or not registered per sawed-off regulations, it could affect the case in terms of the shooter's parents possibly being charged and held partly accountable.

I hope that if LE can't/won't pursue negligence charges against the parents for leaving the gun accessible, that they will be pressured to pursue charges against the parents for illegal possession if it turns out that the shotgun wasn't legally-owned. That matters to me, in terms of full justice for the victims' families and at least attempting to increase awareness/implications of what happens when kids have unsupervised access to firearms in the home.

Also, I can now envision how a shotgun could be smuggled into a school within a small duffel bag, as was reportedly done in this case. If the barrel was sawed almost completely off, it could be similar size to a handgun.

Yes we are discussing the type of weapon that was used. Its not like the parents are here and we are explaining it to them. People were wondering how a shotgun could be hidden and snuck into a school. It was a honest question with a honest answer.

The shooter was not a minor and he's dead, so there are no possible charges for illegal firearms possession against the parents or the shooter to be contemplated with better understanding of the gun type in this case.

Logic and law, as opposed to emotions, makes the gun itself relevant from a legal perspective in some cases (like the latest school shooting), while it's not in others (like the Indiana grocery shooting).

So it was ok to talk about the firearm used when the media wanted to point out that a "evil black rifle" was used, but now that the shooters are using shotguns and handguns we cant talk about it anymore?

The media and you can talk about whatever you want, as far as I'm concerned F.U.

The gun itself just isn't relevant in terms of having a potential legal impact in some cases, while it is in others.

I'm far more concerned about the dead children than “was the shooter using an X25.2 under and over or an X25.2 side by side?”

Who gives a shit? Innocent children are dead!

I agree with you CN.

It's all about keeping it clinical and sterile.

After all, its just another slaughtered human being at the hands of a useful 'tool'.

There'll be hundreds of thousands more in our lifetime.

We are discussing the case and all aspects of it; that's par for the course in the crime forum.

There is room for your emotion and there is room for others who wish to explore the implications of the gun's legality, the parents' role, school security and police response time, juvenile mindsets and sentences, and many other factors. Exploring those factors does not equate to a lack of concern for the victims and their families.

To correct your misstatement and maintain accuracy of the case facts here, no children have died in the latest school shooting.

As posted a couple of times upthread, the girl is in stable condition. The boy is still being treated in critical care; hoping he pulls through. (The girl, Kendal Sanders, is now expected to be released from the hospital shortly.)

The child who shot his schoolmates was apprehended without injury.

Male shooting victim, update and identification

Nathaniel Tavarez, 12 - shooting victim

Gov. Susana Martinez said Thursday the boy who was shot in the face and neck at a New Mexico middle school is heavily sedated and on a breathing machine, but his doctors are optimistic.

Martinez told reporters the student remained in critical condition at a Lubbock, Texas, hospital and doctors have repaired slight damage to his heart. She also said his face and head are covered in pockmarks from the shotgun pellets, and both of his eyes were injured.

Still, she said, the boy has improved. "The doctors feel good about him," Martinez said.

Good to hear that Nathaniel is improving.

The governor of NM today also corrected reports of his age being 11; he's 12 - same as the shooter.

It was very good to hear from Governor Martinez last night that Nathaniel Tavarez's condition is improving and that Kendal Sanders will be well enough to leave the hospital soon.

There was definitely some misinformation about the number of victims, the ages of the victims, etc... early on. It's become par for the course as media looks to scoop early reports before the details are verified and before in-the-know authorities can verify information.

We've been following the Roswell school shooting in this thread.

Suspect's Parents Public Statements

"We praying that God will be with everyone who has been affected." They didn't try to explain the shooter's actions, which left "his whole family ... heartbroken," though they didn't ignore his impact.

"For all of the anguish that many suffered yesterday, our family offers our heartfelt condolences and remorse in words that we cannot fully express."

About the weapon and access - Roswell, NM school shooting

This new information released by Chief Kassettas answers my questions from yesterday about possible negligence and/or gun charges against Campbell's parents, sorta:

Police report that their investigation indicates...

- the shotgun Campbell used to shoot his fellow students was purchased at Walmart by the kid's father.

- the shotgun was the only one of many guns in the home that wasn't locked in a safe.

- the 12 year-old shooter probably sawed off the barrel himself.

If this info is coming from the parents, I sincerely hope that police investigate further - it could well be the parents covering their asses, IMO.

PHILADELPHIA SCHOOL SHOOTING - FRIDAY, 17 JANUARY

[Image: chool-shooting-dl1.jpg?w=620&h=349&crop=1]
Delaware Valley Charter High

It happened at about 3:20 p.m. Friday at Delaware Valley Charter High School, located at the 5200 block of Old York Road in the Logan section.

According to Philadelphia Police, a student apparently had a handgun inside the school gym. Police say the gun then discharged, striking two 15-year-old students, a male and a female.

Both students were struck once in the arms. They were taken to Albert Einstein Medical Center in stable condition.

The female victim has since been released from the hospital. The male victim is expected to remain hospitalized overnight.

Police say it is unclear at this time if the weapon went off accidentally or intentionally. It is also unclear how many shots were fired.

Philadelphia Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey says about seven students were in the gym at the time of the incident. Some were shooting a basketball, others were huddled in a corner talking.

"We have not found a gun, but there's two, perhaps three, youngsters that were together," Philadelphia Police Chief Charles Ramsey said. "We're not sure which one fired. One of the ones that we have was part of that group. They're all boys, all students."

Shortly before 7 p.m., a student surrendered to police with his family.

Ramsey says the incident was captured on surveillance video. Ramsey didn't know what staffing or security procedures were in place at the school but said "there was a breakdown in security of some kind" because the gun got into the building.

The high school was immediately placed on lockdown following the incident. Officers dismissed students one by one once cleared by police.

SWAT teams searched and cleared the school. Investigators, including agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), remain on scene.

Philadelphia School Shooting - Update

Suspects
No names have been released, but police have one suspect in custody and are seeking a second suspect. The school gym's surveillance video should be really helpful in making sure the right students are held accountable.

Victims
Very fortunate that neither of the two 15 year-olds who were shot in the arm was more seriously wounded or killed.

Security

A recent grad of the school, Dante Jenkins, told reporters that the school has metal detectors and he can't understand how someone was able to get a gun past them and into the gym. That may have been what Commissioner Ramsey was referring to when he said there was an obvious breach in security, though LE hasn't specifically provided details yet.

Christ! Every other day there is a school shooting. I wish I knew what drove these children to become so emotionless or over emotional. This is heartbreaking.

I think there should be a class in school called Empathy class. Kids could be taught morality as obviously they are not learning it at home. With religion and family values getting a diminishing platform they need to learn it somewhere. At least 50% do.

Philadelphia School Shooting - Updates and Corrections

Suspects - update:
-A 15 year-old boy was apprehended on Friday and questioned by police. He was cleared of any involvement and released.

-A 17 year-old boy who police were seeking, based on the gym surveillance video, turned himself in to police on Friday. He has since been released and has not been charged.

-Another 17 year-old boy was then arrested. Police say the video shows that Raisheem Rochwell was responsible for the shooting (his lawyer claims the shooting was not intentional and his client isn't admitting any fault). Rochwell faces two counts of aggravated assault and possession offenses. He is being charged as an adult and held on $500,000 bail.

Victims - corrections:
Previous reports cited the ages of the male and female shooting victims who were each shot in the arm as 15. The girl is actually 18 and she's been released from the hospital. Her boyfriend is the other shooting victims and he's 17 - he's still in the hospital being treated.

Security:
LE and school officials are investigating how the suspect was able to get the gun past the school's metal detectors and into the gym. (Nothing in the latest report about whether LE has located the gun.)
