TO KILL OR NOT TO KILL
#1

A woman who recently died left an order in her will that her dog should be put down after her death. This is a healthy German Shepard and pets are considered property. What do you think about this? The woman mentioned other provisions and her lawyer said that one of them would be to go to a no kill shelter so he's trying to raise money for that. Right now the dog has gotten a stay of execution.

Animal rights groups want her attorney to totally disregard her will but there are legalities. Ugh.

I think that is incredibly selfish of her.

Huh? Something doesn't sound right.

Animals are property, but I've never never heard of an owner wanting an animal put down when the owner dies.

It seems that the lawyer is trying to back peddle out of his obligations. Or would that be up to the Executor to carry that out?

To euthanize an animal around here is $125.00. To surrender one to a shelter is between $40.00 $75.00 depending on the shelter. How much money does he really need to raise?

I'd love to see a copy of the will.

Here's the story I read. I'd like to know a little more too -

Lay, a Dearborn County, IN, woman who died a few days ago, gave Bella, her healthy German shepherd, a death sentence in her final will. Her attorney, Doug Denmure told WFIE-TV in Evansville, IN, that Lay offered several options about what should happen to the dog after she died, but the dog joining her eternity was the most practical.

He didn’t spell out the other options.

The scenario has set up a howl among animal welfare advocates, who are racing against a ticking clock to spare Bella’s life, scheduled to end sometime Tuesday.

Concerned animal lovers are posting on Facebook and asking PAWS of Dearborn County to use its sway to obtain a stay of execution.

On Facebook, Bella’s allies are suggesting that Bella could suddenly run away, or that the attorney could simply ignore the dead woman’s wishes. Volunteers at the shelter describe Bella as smart, well-trained and sweet. They want to give her a good home, but Denmure says his hands are tied.

Very true.

I read the story (thanks for posting the link, Duchess)- It sounds like the lawyer is a scam artist.

Being a current shelter volunteer (and one for the last 5 years or so), once you pay the surrender fee, that's it. You don't keep paying every month-the financial responsibility falls on the shelter until the dog is adopted-then the financial responsibility falls on the adopter.

Purebreds (especially shepherds) get adopted fairly quickly.

Again, how much money does he think he needs to raise? And is the money going to actually go to the dog, or the Lawyer fees?

I agree with you but I think it gets complicated because the will is a legal document.

This is good news. Bela the German Shepherd was sent to the no-kill center stipulated in his owner's will.

After an 1,800-mile trip to Utah from Indiana, made possible with the help of donations, Bela arrived at the Best Friends Animal Society's no-kill sanctuary Sunday where he was greeted with a great big party.

It's unknown yet whether he'll be adopted out or remain at the shelter.
