I've always thought of Hospice as "oh shit they assigned me to Hospice, it's the end". But it was different with my mom, she wanted to continue with the chemo, the oncologist never told her not to bother continuing therapy, in fact she said don't give up on us now, and then all the sudden Vitas Hospice is calling my house several times a day. I never read any of the stuff we were signing because I'm an asshole who didn't have the time. But that was it, she moved in with my aunt on my husband's birthday Sept. 24 and she died Oct. 25.

As people that work with palliative care I'm sure you and Aussie have heard of the " death rattle". My aunt calls me up a week after my mom has been there and says you need to get over her right away, your mom has the death rattle. WTF, she was just at my house a week ago fully functioning. So I go over there and of course she's drugged out of her mind and you'd think the night nurse would move off the couch so I could sleep next to her, nope I slept on the floor all night next to her.

I never heard the 'death rattle' till I was in Palliative Care, then I heard it. Poor thing. Horrible. It means, the end is near.
Sally, in nursing there are those who are there for the right reasons and those who are not. You just gave a prime example of those who are not. There are those who are in it for the power, the money, themselves.
Yes, I have a family to provide for, but I also have empathy, compassion and caring for my fellow man. It comes naturally, I am very good at my job for those reasons. There are those that can upset patients and their families, it is those inevitably that are in it 100% for themselves. My job is very rewarding, part of that reward is helping others, making them feel better, bringing a smile to their face. Hopefully bless them. Yes I am paid well, but I am not just there for myself or money, I am there to make a difference.
There is corruption and evil in nursing, that is for sure. When you come up against it, you need to call it out. Completely unprofessional and unacceptable conduct.

Divisive issue in the medical community...
The American College of Physicians just asked California Gov. Brown to do what it argues is the right thing — veto California's right-to-die bill.
The measure would give terminally ill patients the right to get a lethal dose of drugs from a physician.
The ACP, the nation's second-largest doctors' group, calls the concept doctor-assisted suicide. ACP President Dr. Wayne Riley, who's also a professor at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, said it’s unethical for doctors to participate in the intentional taking of a life. “We acknowledge that some patients want control over the cause and timing of their death," Riley said. "But it’s not our roel as physicians to provide that. And therefore we, ethically, cannot participate in the medicalization of suicide.”
In contrast, the California Medical Association is taking a neutral stance on the right-to-die bill. CMA Associate Vice President Molly Weedn said her members have evolved on the issue. "We are always looking at ways to improve palliative and hospice care, and the emphasis should certainly be there," she explained. "But there's also an understanding that that's not always going to do the trick."
Five states have passed right-to-die laws, including New Mexico. That state's measure has been blocked by the New Mexico Court of Appeals.
Gov. Brown has not indicated whether he plans to halt or pass the California's bill.

That's awful. Just because you sign some papers doesn't give them the right to O.D. her or take her life prematurely for chrissake.
Bastards. I wonder if Hospice gets paid by the hour or a flat rate per case. I want my hospice worker to be paid by the hour with a bonus on the end if he/she doesn't murder me but I leave this world without significant pain/fear.
