Tennessee. Of course. There's a reason some people think it's filled with backwards hicks. He wouldn't get away with that in many other states.

He got 12 yrs for raping his adopted Daughter. He should have got at least 50. That way he would get out in 25, He may get out in 6 now.

They do not differentiate rape & incest, it is irrelevant. Sickening. It's fuckin' sickening.

I saw that Alabama governor Kay Ivey signed the bill into law today.

These red state 'heartbeat' and 'ban' laws are a very transparent political ploy, as I see it.

The conservative/religious politicians behind them know they'll be legally challenged because they're unconstitutional, in that they violate the Supreme Court's Roe v. Wade decision.

They want the cases to be appealed and heard by this particular conservative-heavy Supreme Court in hopes of getting Roe v. Wade overturned and securing religious voters.

We discussed the likelihood of this type of strategy being employed when Trump was elected; it was highly predictable.  I hope the Supreme Court strikes the state laws down, but I'm not too optimistic.

Anyway, I wouldn't personally object too much if a federal ban on abortion past the point of fetal viability outside of the womb were to be implemented (with medical exceptions).  But, banning abortions after as early as six weeks and/or in cases of rape / incest / fetal deformity is some fucked up bullshit, in my opinion.

According to everything I've read, most women don't even know they're pregnant at 6 weeks.

I'm not convinced this is about the pregnancies because I don't believe they care about kids, I think it's more about control. So many of those people who make the laws don't want sex ed in their schools, they don't want birth control options made available and their concern about a life only lasts for the 9 months the woman is pregnant, they don't care about what comes after birth. This is not their business, it's not mine either, it's between the woman and her doctor.

I actually mostly agree (hating finding common ground with you and on something so terrible). Having said that states are made up of people and each state has its own culture and norms.
States should make decisions on the will of their constituents. Abortion ought to be part of that conversation
Democrats really gave up agency of any part in the discourse when they talked of killing babies in and out of the womb. They left the table for others.

I thought it was funny how they're claiming that life starts at fertilization... unless it's in vitro. Those don't count.

Those cocksuckas don't give a shit about human life and anyone who thinks they do has shit for brains. If they cared, another small child wouldn't have died in their custody. If they cared, they wouldn't separate the kids from their parents. If they cared, they'd have some fuckin' empathy. Fuck 'em all and vote them out.

The kids dying make my fricken head spin. Despicable bastards.

No state has the legal right to pass laws which violate the Constitution and/or federal laws.  That’s what’s happening here, by intent.

The state legislators pushing these abortion bans know their new state laws will be legally challenged before they go into effect. They’re hoping the legal challenges make it up to the current Supreme Court. With Kavanaugh now a justice and the Supreme Court bench now majority conservative, they see their best chance to have Roe v Wade overturned, thereby making abortion illegal in every state.

So, the opinion of every US citizen, especially those who vote,  regardless of the state in which they reside, does matter.

Hopefully, this political ploy will backfire at the voting polls. A large majority of the US population supports keeping Roe v Wade in effect.

However, the states in Trump’s core base are more heavy with evangelicals and extreme conservatives who oppose all abortion, birth control, sex ed, etc.   And, since the electoral college means that some votes count less than others and enables the preferences of the minority of the population to rule, it might still be a winning strategy for far right Republicans. Remains to be seen.

I wonder if any of the people who attacked Kavenaugh now hope he will vote for any legislation they agree with or will be encouraged to keep Roe vs Wade? Maybe attacking him was a poor political play that stacked huge risk against negligible reward

Wow. Now Missouri is sending their own fucked up bill to the Governor to be signed. This one doesn't have any exceptions for rape & incest either. Man.

So raping someone only gets you a few years in prison if that, but getting an abortion after being raped will get you a life sentence?

Some of the new state laws (at least the ones I've seen) make abortion punishable up to life in prison for the doctor, not the female patient.

That's almost equally as absurd as jailing the patient for life, to me.

Abortion is legal in this country. So, it's not only absurd, it's illegal and unconstitutional (and misogynistic, in my opinion).
