was a pretty good movie ^

While actor John Wilkes Booth succeeded in his deranged mission of assassinating President Abraham Lincoln near the end of the Civil War, several other conspirators were not so successful – and were hanged because of it.

On July 7, 1865, four conspirators – Lewis Powell, David Herold, George Atzerodt, and Mary Surratt – were hanged by the neck at Fort McNair in Washington D.C.

Their deaths were a culmination of sorts of a nation ravaged by war, bitter conflict, and the death of the nation’s commander-in-chief, the Great Emancipator.

Scottish photographer Alexander Gardner captured the macabre scene, including pictures of the condemned seen moments before they walked to the 12-foot gallows, specially constructed for the executions.

The soldier that shot Booth in the barn casterated himself with a pair of scissors then went to church an hour later. He ended up living in a hole in the ground out west where he died. He was Boston Corbett.
He ain't heavy, he's my brother.

i just nicked this post out of an oscar thread. i wanted to tell you this movie was beyond AWFUL! what horrible dialog! what repetitive crap. what stupid muppet-like wolves! it was just terrible! hah

What’s worse than being in a plane crash? Why, surviving only to be devoured by wolves of course. If there’s one thing to take away from “The Grey,” it’s this: if you’re ever in a plane crash and abandoned in the snowy Alaskan tundra and being chased by flesh-craving mondo wolves, you better be traveling with Liam Neeson.

Saw Ted, the Mark Wahlberg flick with the talking bear. Exactly as bawdy as it was expected to be, but way funnier as well. Had more than enough gut-buster moments, and Mila Kunis played the obligatory "girlfriend who delivers the ultimatum to grow up" role with skill and style, and managed to come off as not at all bitchy.

Worth your movie dollar IMO. Lots of solid comedy moments.

EDIT to add: NOT A KID FRIENDLY FILM.

Whenever Mila's Kunis is in a movie in the privacy of my mind I rename the move "Who's Mila going to be fucking next?"

Guess Marky Mark drew the lucky dot.

Unless she does the bear.
Thank god I am oblivious to the opinions of others while caught in the blinding splendor of my own cleverness.

If you call Ashton Kutcher's (sp?) and by proxy Demi Moore's seconds lucky then yeah.

Wait, she does the bear?

amazon review:

Crimson Petal & The White (DVD)

Compulsory & addictive, it mimes froth of Victorian London Sts. Cinematography, costumes & sets force viewers deeper into its dark psychological story. The plot and writing are less than stellar. Lead characters portrayals leave one mesmerized by the despicable dearth and poverty of a Dickensian era. Catherine Cookson's poor and low-class tales come to mine too. Don't expect glamor and Victorian gaiety, but every form of crime and dereliction known of the time, 1874. No sympathy, it's lost in strong crass depictions that leave little to imagine. Mad, cunning women are played so well the viewer begins to hate, not adore these characters. Yet it's a mini-series you'll love hating.

The camera's eye, focused on the disgust of the dirty streets and rooms, is filmed so cunningly it resembles Impressionism art done with dark color. Not a love story, but debauchery glistening from mud, vomit, blood and ale. Stunning visuals obligate viewing. Romola Garai (Emma; Amazing Grace) turns sharply from roles like "Emma." As Sugar, she's sweet/sour in her portrayal both with and without clothing as she passes from prostitute, to mistress, to governess. Her Mom and Madam (Gillian Anderson- Bleak House) is so convincing she seems to have literally taken a turn into the underworld. Mrs. Fox (Shirley Henderson- Wish Me Luck: Series 3) seems unable to decide which side of the orgies she desires. William (Chris O'Dowd) will disgust men and women, with and without garments. Plenty more adding to a coarse, disturbing image of poverty and orgy coming to life. Adults only, strongly recommended.

SUBTITLES for all 4 episodes (an hour each) and bonus material.
1
Step immediately into a violent, crass world of brothels, drink, crime, and Sugar. Introductions of William, a want-to-be writer who mirrors Sugar's own novel attempt. His mad wife pens diaries of illness and abuse. Wm's bro writes sermons. Sugar decides Wm is a rung up the ladder of respect.
2
Wm gets Sugar an apt. She becomes `guardian angel' to another woman, to her gainful advantage. A mistress becomes obsessed. Mrs Fox and Wm's bro have their own bodily fantasies.
3
Sugar becomes a family tutor and more of a wife's madness is exposed via diaries, driving her closer to an asylum. Sugar interferes with unexpected results.
4
Sugar's lap of luxury begins to crumble. Loathing works its way into the lust. The climax of lives gets dirty and dark.

From the book by Michel Faber. BBC drama, not for the faint of heart. The title comes from a line of Tennyson's 1847 poetry, quoted in the series.
If you can't handle earthy, ghastly, sexual crudeness, give it a pass. I'm not sold that the film needed all of it, but it is there. This tames Cookson films and "Lady Chatterley's Lover."

Even better that Daniel Day Lewis is in it!

Even better its directed by Spielberg.

Only downside is that Lincoln isn't slaying vampires in this one.

Al Pacino will be starring as Joe Paterno in the biopic, "Happy Valley". It's gonna be directed by Brian DePalma.

I like everything Al Pacino does and think he'll make a great Paterno. I really liked "Scarface" and "Carlito's Way" with Pacino and DePalma, but DePalma's "Black Dahlia" was really really bad - hope this new film is more coherent.

We watched "Nightcrawler" On Demand last night. 44

[Image: MV5BMTk5NTI1ODQ1N15BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwMzE2...14_AL_.jpg]

It's about a crime-scene photographer working the night owl beat in L.A.. The movie sheds light on how some media sources position, manipulate and present crime stories to maximize ratings.

I thought it was a great dark movie and Jake Gyllenhaal was creepy good in the lead role.

Creepy dark mystery and crime dramas are amongst my favorites, along with non-slasher horror and documentaries. That could be one of the reasons I liked Nightcrawler so much, plus I don't really need a conclusion to the story as an ending. I'm a weirdo.

There are some great eight and twelve part series' of those genres on the tv these day. I've watched more television in the last year than I probably watched in the previous 5 years combined.

I watched an episode of HBO's True Detective at my mom's last year and ended up watching eight episodes in two sittings. It was a creepy dark crime drama with strange lead characters, played by Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson -- with an ending that wrapped up the story.

Also, watched FX's American Horror Story (Asylum & Freak Show seasons) with my niece over the course of a couple of months. I've always liked Jessica Lange -- she's a great character actress. My niece absolutely loves her on the show and was surprised when I told her that Lange used to star in movies, back in the "olden days".

I think some of the cable television programming available now is a better watch than most feature films.
