Woman mauled by bear dies

http://www.azfamily.com/news/local/Woman...74798.html

GILBERT, Ariz. – A family member has confirmed that Lana Hollingsworth, the Gilbert woman who as attacked by a bear in late June, died overnight.

According to doctors, Hollingsworth died of a massive brain hemorrhage. She had undergone several surgeries in the three weeks since she was mauled on June 28.

Doctors believe an unknown bacteria, possibly from the bear’s claws, sparked an infection that they could not control. The theory is that the rampant infection might have caused the hemorrhage.

Robert Oates, Hollingsworth’s son, said the black bear essentially scalped his mother as she walked her dog outside her vacation home in Pinetop.

According to the Arizona Game and Fish Department, the bear attacked Hollingsworth three times before a neighbor was able to chase it into the woods.

Hollingsworth was flown to Healthcare Osborn Medical Center where doctors performed a series of surgeries to repair her skull and her badly injured arms. Physicians kept her in a medically-induced coma most of the time. By July 6, Hollingsworth had already undergone seven surgeries.

Community members organized several fundraisers to help Hollingsworth’s family pay for her rapidly mounting medical expenses. They also set up an account in Hollingsworth's name at Bank of America.

The bear, which had been scavenging for trash near a Dumpster at the time of the attack, was quickly tracked down and killed. The Arizona Department of Health Services ran a rabies test. It came back negative.

Bear attacks on humans are rare. Only seven incidents, including the attack on Hollingsworth, have been documented in Arizona since 1990, which is as far back as the department’s database tracks.

Hollingsworth was 61 years old.

From a previous report: http://www.azfamily.com/news/Woman-maule...50024.html

Goates says the bear "scalped" his mother, tearing off her skull all the way down to the back of her neck. He says her arms were severely injured and sustained nerve damage.

"Her arms are the worst part of it all, her right arm is just missing big chunks and really cut up a lot and her left arm, there's nerve damage," Coates said.

VALENCIA, Spain – A man was gored to death after provoking a bull with an umbrella during a festival in eastern Spain, local newspaper Las Provincias reported Sunday.

The victim, who was described as around 50, was apparently drunk when he struck the bull with the umbrella, enraging the animal during the festivities Saturday evening in the town of Rafelbunyol, in the province of Valencia.

The bull cornered the man in a narrow street before goring him several times. The man was taken to the hospital in Valencia, but died following wounds to the chest and the armpit.

The remainder of the festival was canceled following the death.

Polar bears love the taste of us humans apparently.

Polar bears are almost completely carnivorous, they don't do the plants and berries like their cousins to the south.

It's not a matter of like the taste, it's a matter of what they are.

But if i had to guess I would think they like the blood flavored humans.

I'm sorry that someone died & others were hurt but, let's be real here. No one should be shocked or angered, they went looking for adventure in a place they were told to keep a high powered rifle handy. I hate that they killed the bear. That bear didn't deserve to die.

I see the picture of the camp, what I don't see is the supply tent that is set up away from the main camp.

anyone with any sense knows that you don't sleep with the food when you're in bear country.

i don't know if there was food in the tent, i doubt it, these kids were well-prepared for this trip. it reminds me of that idiot and his girlfriend eaten by a grizzly while in their tent, tim treadwell. but he asked for it.

here is the poor kid who was killed, he wanted to be a doctor like his father. Signs_173 Horatio Chapple

i'm sorry they had to kill the bear also, but there was no choice.

A Mexican teen became the first person in the United States to die from a vampire bat -- and the Centers for Disease Control warned that the bats may be spreading in the country.

The 19-year-old migrant worker contracted rabies from a bite on his heel from the blood sucker on July 15th, 2010. He was bitten in Michoacan, Mexico, 10 days before he left for the United States to work on a sugar cane plantation in Louisiana. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) only just confirmed on Friday, Aug. 12, that his death was the first such case in the U.S.

"This case represents the first reported human death from a vampire bat rabies virus variant in the United States," said the CDC and Prevention in its Morbidity and Mortality weekly report.

The teenager became ill two weeks after the bite, having not received a rabies vaccination. He had a particularly aggressive case of the disease with an incubation period of 15 days as opposed to the average 85 days seen in other human rabies cases in the United States.

He sought medical attention for fatigue, shoulder pain, a dropping left eye and numbness of the left hand. He also developed respiratory distress and a 101.1-degree fever, according the the CDC's report.

Olga Moskalyova (right) and her stepfather Igor Tsyganenkov (left) were both eaten alive by bears

A distraught mother listened on a mobile phone as her teenage daughter was eaten alive by a brown bear and its three cubs.

Olga Moskalyova, 19, gave an horrific hour-long running commentary on her own death in three separate calls as the wild animals mauled her.

She screamed: 'Mum, the bear is eating me! Mum, it’s such agony. Mum, help!'

Her mother Tatiana said that at first she thought she was joking.

'But then I heard the real horror and pain in Olga’s voice, and the sounds of a bear growling and chewing,' she added. 'I could have died then and there from shock.'

Unknown to Tatiana, the bear had already killed her husband Igor Tsyganenkov - Olga’s stepfather - by overpowering him, breaking his neck and smashing his skull.

Olga, a trainee psychologist, saw the attack on her stepfather in tall grass and reeds by a river in Russia and fled for 70 yards before the mother bear grabbed her leg.

In a second call, a weak Olga gasped: 'Mum, the bears are back. She came back and brought her three babies. They’re... eating me.'

The double killing is the latest in a spate of bear attacks across Russia, as the hungry animals seek food in areas where people have encroached and settled on their former habitat.

Oh shit, being eaten alive by a clan of bears is about the scariest thing I can imagine. That poor mom listening to the whole nightmare and being unable to help her daughter is dreadful. I need some Sweet Honest Therapy reading this story after just having read the story of the 7 year old handicapped boy who was decapitated at the kitchen sink by his fucked up dad. At least the bears aren't guilty of any malicious intent, just survival instinct.

A Michigan man has become the second person so far this summer to be killed at Yellowstone National Park by a grizzly bear.

John Wallace, whose body was discovered last week, was killed by a grizzly on Wednesday or Thursday, an autopsy revealed Monday.

The 59-year-old was traveling alone in Yellowstone, officials said, and had pitched a tent at a campground about 5 miles into the park.

There were no witnesses to the attack, Yellowstone superintendent Dan Wenk said. Wallace's body was found by two hikers on Friday along Mary Mountain Trail, a 21-mile path that starts just south of Canyon Junction.

Two trails and a section of the Hayden Valley west of Yellowstone's Grand Loop Road are now closed to hikers, according to The Associated Press. Park officials asked hikers elsewhere in the park to stay on the trails, to hike in groups of three or more and carry bear spray.

Wallace's death comes more than a month after the death of a 57-year-old California man who was also savagely killed by a grizzly.

I've actually argued more than once, that I'd like to have convicted child rapists and murderers face death by wildlife.

If it's a 'no doubt' conviction, with eyewitnesses, just drop the muthafucker straight into Yellowstone with some sort of Grizzly Bear attractor (scent, noise, etc.) AND televise the event.

How long would the person last? Would he be eaten alive, or killed BEFORE being eaten? It'd make great TV, and who knows might actually deter some sick fucks if they knew this was how they'd end up.
