i'll keep a running report going here until i lose power, but i don't expect any heavy weather until tomorrow afternoon. once i am offline this is the link to see what's happening here (if it stays online) if you're interested:

the Cape and islands now appear likely to experience hurricane-force winds from Hurricane Earl, officials have upgraded the region from a hurricane watch to a warning.

Cape Cod, the Islands and the south-facing coast of Massachusetts are under the hurricane warning, federal emergency officials said during a press conference phone call this morning.

“The message today is this is a day of action,” Federal Emergency Management Agency administrator Craig Fugate said. “Conditions are going to deteriorate rapidly.”

ghosts of hurricanes past. that old feeling i used to have in florida, and thought i had left behind, is sneaking up on me. i would get so damn frightened when a big 'cane was headed my way. especially after the total destruction and horror of Andrew. we were always activated for a few days. not allowed to go home, required to stay in the disgusting noisy jail for days at a time. inmates were locked down and fed sandwiches. we had a couple grills in the sally port. we tried to sleep when off shift. almost impossible. we shipped our dependents to other counties whose sheriff depts. looked after them. we had to lock up our houses and hope they would be intact when it was over. road patrol hunkered down and did NOT answer any calls to 911. the people were on their own during the height of the storms. they knew this ahead of time. our sheriff was not going to risk our lives, cruisers stayed under overpasses for some shelter.
people who had refused to evacuate were shit out of luck if they got in trouble.
all in all it was a miserable experience. i would worry myself sick over all my valuables and "stuff". for the last few years i was there, i kept most of my photos, china and nice belongings in 'waterproof' bins.

trees are a concern. this is my 50' Christmas tree, right outside the kitchen. i hope it has a strong root system! but it is huge. if it ever fell on the house i'd be in trouble. :O

Sean O'Brien, an emergency planning coordinator from Barnstable County, Massachusetts, told CNN's "American Morning" that emergency shelters had been opened in the area, which includes Cape Cod, and that residents should expect tropical-storm force winds.

"We will see power outages," O'Brien warned. "We have not seen anything like this" since Hurricane Bob slammed Cape Cod in 1991.

"We think we're going to see some large surf, especially on the outer Cape," he said. People need to remain "vigilant" and "constantly aware."

The Barnstable County Sheriff's Office warned residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas to get out.

"... police and firefighters and our civilian response team will be going door to door to make sure they got the message," said Yarmouth Fire Chief Michael Walker. "We're telling people 'we really think you should leave. We think you may be at risk.' "

Ferry service to Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard was curtailed ahead of the storm.


it looks like it's weakened but i know it can gain strength in open water. still, i'm not too worried. i think the Vineyard and Nantucket will get the worst of it.
i am only a mile from the sea, but on fairly high ground. flooding can be a big concern in many areas.
i stocked up on peanut butter, bottled water and bread. and picked all the veg in garden, i have cucumbers and butternut squash for life! :O
right now i want a hot bath since if the power goes i won't have water, i have a well run with an electric pump.
normally this would have been a HUGE traffic day for people coming to Cape for Labor Day weekend. but they have been told to stay off the roads and the bridges from mainland may be closed when winds get high. oh well, fuck you Boston.

I was just outside and it just started to rain @ 8pm. It may last till 2-3 pm tommorow but it is supposed to be sunny Sunday and Monday.........so far. We shall see........I am hoping for a nice gust that knocks down a couple trees. With my house insurance it would be the cheap way to go with the 1000.00 deductable it will cost 3000.00 for a tree guy to take them out. I would do it but there are wires in the way, and electricity frightens me more than L.C. what with my spelling fuckups I will take the storm by all means.........C'mon Earl!

well that was much ado about nothing. big surf, some areas w/o power, some flooding i think, i just woke up & don't know yet.
but earl didn't have half the power of a nor'easter.
i'm quite relieved this morning.

Parts of Nantucket, Massachusetts, have already received 3 to 6 inches of rain.

Storm surging "will be accompanied by large and destructive waves" near Maine and Nova Scotia, the agency said.
