NBA Announces First Female Coach

I've seen her play. She's great on the court and smart. I hope she does well serving as the Assistant Coach for none other than the current NBA champions, the San Antonio Spurs.

(Becky) Hammon, who is currently in her 16th WNBA season, announced on July 23 that she would retire as a player at the conclusion of the 2014 season. Named one of the WNBA’s Top 15 Players of All-Time in July of 2011, Hammon ranks seventh in WNBA history in points (with 5,809), fourth in assists (1,687) and sixth in games (445).

“I very much look forward to the addition of Becky Hammon to our staff,” said Spurs Head Coach Gregg Popovich. “Having observed her working with our team this past season, I’m confident her basketball IQ, work ethic and interpersonal skills will be a great benefit to the Spurs.”

A six-time WNBA All-Star, Hammon has spent the last eight seasons with the San Antonio Stars. She is the Stars all-time leader in assists (1,112) and three-point field goals made (493) while ranking second in franchise history in points (3,442) and games (218). In 2012 Hammon was the top vote getter for the Stars All-Decade Team.

In her WNBA career Hammon has appeared in 445 regular season games, averaging 13.1 points, 3.8 assists and 2.5 rebounds in 28.0 minutes. She has earned All-WNBA First Team honors twice (in 2007 and 2009) and was named to the All-WNBA Second Team in 2005 and 2008.

She'll do just fine.

Leave it to Pop to break down the barriers.

The guys a genius, so I'm assuming this will be a great thing.

Will she be in the locker room after practices and games for the SchlongFest?

Why else would she even apply?

Are you guys joking? She was in the WNBA for 16 years... I mean she might as well be in the LPGA. I bet she goes out for tacos after the game.

In all seriousness, that's wonderful. Should be more women coaches. I could see them making a movie out of this. Change a few details... maybe make it about the Knicks with the NY media... maybe have it be a black woman become the coach... have her be the head coach. It could star Whoopi Goldberg! (Ok, maybe I wasn't that serious after all.)

Good point. I'm retracting my statement.

Trevor Booker's back tip basket last night still has me smiling.

The Jazz lost to the Oklahoma Thunder, but as Gunnar would say, that shot was "made of win" nonetheless.

I saw that this morning. It made me applaud him. It was flawless.

NCAA Men's Final Four this weekend in Indianapolis.

Hall of Fame coaches (or will be someday) for every team, John Calipari, Bo Ryan, Mike Krzeszewski (just a guess on the spelling) and Tom Izzo.

Kentucky is 38-0 and could finish as the first unbeaten in nearly 40 years.

Tonight's picks:
Kentucky 75, Wisconsin 67
Duke 66, Michigan State 62

Monday's Championship:
Duke 78, Kentucky 75

The only team I really care for in this bunch is MSU. Izzo does a great job with lesser talent year in and year out.

No team, in any sport, is safe from you, MS.

Hmmm... let's see, I picked Kentucky to NOT win the National Championship even though they were overwhelming favorites to do so, and correctly picked the team that did win the title.

Are you messing with me Duchess?

I knew when you picked Kentucky to win Saturday night they were doomed.

MS, I'm serious when I ask you to please not mention my team or any of their games during the season. I won't rag on you about anything for 6 months if you can refrain from doing that.

hah

Seriously!

Games 3 & 4 are tonight and Wednesday night in St. Paul between my Minnesota Wild and the St. Louis Blues.

Series is tied 1-1 (best of 7).

There really is nothing like the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

NHL Playoff Update:

My squad leads the St.Louis Blues 3 games to 2, and currently leads in Game 6, 3-1, with 13 mins left in the 3rd period.

This is some good stuff. It would be a nice upset series victory.

If we win, we get the hated Black Hawks for the 3rd year in a row.

Rangers, right?

I told one of my buddies with about 10 games left in the regular season, that it'd be Wild vs Rangers for the Stanley Cup.

Oops, Duchess, you got me.

I watched the entire Hawks-Nashville game last night and dont remember hearing his name once.

Wonder if he's injured?

Edit: just checked box score for from last night and Carcillo did not play. After further investigation, I see he was a Flyer.

Now it all makes sense.
