BELLEVUE, Wash. -- Bellevue police interviewed a woman believed to be a friend of Julia Biryukova, the mother of missing Bellevue 2-year-old boy Sky Metalwala, late Tuesday night.

Shelbi Owen spent four hours with investigators. Police believe Owen is the woman Biryukova called for help after Biryukova said she ran out of gas and left Sky in the car to walk to a gas station.

Owen reportedly told police she was shocked to see Sky's mother walking on Sunday morning without her son. Investigators say the last time someone saw the toddler was two weeks ago.

Bellevue Police Department planned to hold a news conference at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday on the latest in the investigation.

Biryukova has hired a new attorney -- Robert Flennaugh, a Seattle lawyer who specializes in criminal defense law.

Police: Mother’s refusal of polygraph ‘looks suspicious’

Posted by John de Leon on November 9, 2011 at 10:46 AM

Bellevue police plan today to examine the car driven by a Julia Biryukova, who said her 2-year-old son disappeared Sunday morning after she left him in her disabled car.

Biryukova said the car ran out of gas while she was driving her son from their Redmond home to a Bellevue hospital. She said she walked with her 4-year-old daughter to a gas station about a mile away to retrieve gas, leaving her son sleeping in his car seat. When she returned, she said her son, Sky Metalwala, was gone.

Police later said the car started when checked by officers and police did not find a gas can nearby.

During a media briefing this morning, Bellevue police Maj. Mike Johnson said police plan to “very thoroughly” examine her car today. That will likely include a check of the gas tank to determine whether it ran out of gas or experienced some other problem.

He said if the examination of the Acura Integra contradicts Biryukova’s story police plan to question her.

Johnson said police also plan to administer polygraphs to “people closest to Julia and Sky.” He said the boy’s father, Solomon Metawala, will take a polygraph today. He said the father has thus far “cooperated fully.”

Johnson said Biryukova’s refusal to take a polygraph examination “looks suspicious.”

He said police also plan to use DNA swabs to eliminate possible suspects. They plan to use the swabs of Biryukova’s car and apartment to determine who may have come in contact with Sky.

John said police have a lot of leads to follow, although he added that none of the leads were “hot.”

“The people who are closest to Sky and Julia are the people who know what happened to Sky,” Johnson said during the briefing.

Police plan another media briefing this afternoon.

mother is "too devastated" to take a poly.

the 4 year old said baby Sky was in car in a blanket.

Police sources tell KIRO 7 Eyewitness News the vehicle driven by the mother of a missing 2-year-old boy who said she ran out of gas and returned to find her son missing had 2.2 gallons of gas in it.

BELLEVUE, Wash. -- KING 5 News has learned that authorities searching for missing two-year-old Sky Metalwala inspected two garbage transfer stations and a landfill on Tuesday and now believe there is the possibility that they may need to begin digging through 50,000 tons of garbage.

FBI agents, among other law enforcement, visited the Houghton Transfer Station in Kirkland and the Factoria Transfer Station in Bellevue, as well as the Cedar Hills landfill where garbage that passes through those facilities is buried.

American laws are a mystery to me...as are the amount of children that go missing.
However, I imagine the Mother commited a crime by abandoning her child therefore must hold some responsibility in the following disappearance.
If I had my way, she would be arrested for abandonment and left in jail until the child was found.
If, as has been suggested, the child has been missing for 2 weeks prior to the reported incident, surely there must be evidence in the house that points to this...lack of used diapers...state of bed...used clothes...something?

If Casey Anthony wouldn't of gotten away with killing her child then IMO I don't think we would have 3-4 cases right now like this.. I think it gave these idiot heartless mothers the idea that they can get away with it too...

They better go through at least 2 weeks worth of garbage in that landfill, if they expect to find Sky there. Does anybody know how many tons of garbage are deposited in this landfill each week?

Seems that the "mother" finally snapped and followed the instructions of the voices she was hearing. According to the current thinking in the field of psychology there is a correlation between OCD and schizophrenia.

Wow, the mother asked cps to put the 4 year old daughter with the father instead of a stranger? None of the mothers side of the family has offered to take the daughter. Daughter has said daddy is mean. Hmm mother has coached her i think.

The mother seems to definitely have an obsession with her daughter more so then her son.

I was watching an ABC news clip and they played a clip of a conversation that was between the parents and mentioned that it came from a website that looked like the mother had set up she had uploaded recorded calls between them on there.....
The only reason people get lost in thought is because it's unfamiliar territory.

Yea, I would have handcuffed her ass at the scene! She is admitting abandonment the second she called the police. Granted it sounds like this little boy has been gone for awhile.

you don't charge on the lesser offense (neglect or whatever the statute there reads). you wait for the bigger offense, for example murder? or you could lose the suspect over legalities. if she were ever charged with murder, they will throw in/stack the lesser included offenses. right now she is somewhat "cooperating". that would end if she were charged with the lesser offense.

the sad truth

Seattle Times
Up until Thursday, Solomon Metalwala had been clinging to the idea his 2-year-old son was alive.

He made TV appearances, went to court and made plans to hand out fliers with photos of his missing son.

He was convinced his estranged wife, Julia Biryukova, had hidden the boy with a relative or friend to spite him because of their ongoing custody battle.

"She has done something with him to hurt me," he said earlier this week.

Police, too, have been operating on the presumption Sky Elijah Metalwala is alive.

But with the passage of time, Metalwala is beginning to fear his son may no longer be alive, and he sobbed inconsolably for three hours Thursday night, his attorney, Leslie Clay Terry III, said Friday.

Police, too, say hopes dim as time passes.

Bellevue police Maj. Mike Johnson said the child's death "is a real possibility," given the amount of time that's passed.

"The reality of this is that Sky may have fallen into some very unfortunate circumstances," he said Friday. "As much as we don't like to think about it or talk about it, it's a reality."

Johnson reiterated that police are "baffled" by Biryukova's story and "frustrated with the lack of information coming from her."
