I just got a call from my oldest begging me to come for the holidays. I am moderately generous, so I always get invited for the big holidays where cash flow is a consideration. This is the conversation:

kid: Please come out here for Christmas or New Year's. My friends can't wait to meet you. I told them you were the female equivalent of "Shit My Dad Says dot com."

me: What the hell? Why would you tell your friends that?

kid: It's okay, they think it's cool because their parents are normal.

WTF? Did I raise kids with no sense of shame? We had the don't-tell-your-teacher-what-your-mom-said-when-she-asks-just-pretend-you-forgot-or-say-something-about-Jesus-but-not-what-I really-said-about-Jesus talk about a hundred times. Now they tell other grown people their mom is a freak.

Of course I am proud they don't lie, but damn.

What do kids/young people say about you?

well when they first saw me in a cop uniform they made the sign of the cross to ward off evil. then said "hide your dope".

but actually i was the baseball/basketball/football team mom all through little league and HS and the kids liked me a lot. i had pool parties at my house for them (and took away their car keys) when they were HS seniors. i would take them to cool things like surfing all day beach picnics and seeing a shuttle launch at night at Cape Canaveral. none of them ever forgot THAT! i loved them all and they knew it.

i still have "my" adult kids call and email me and call me "mom".

Huh. I don't know. The kids tell me their friends think I'm nice which they don't understand at all.

I always ask the kids about the latest school gossip. Yesterday, I got names of the 7^th graders that are smoking pot and I know which girls are considered sluts and who the horniest boys are.

Unfortunately, I found out that one of the kids who is a wannabe pothead is the son of a friend. Not a close, close friend but still a friend. I kind of want to say something to her but I would have to know for certain that it wouldn't get out that my kids had said something. If some kid goes to school and call one of mine a narc, they'll clam up tighter than Dick's uptight ass.

Young people like me, my whole crew is young, 2 22 year olds and a couple of 30 somethings.

They all think I'm great.

I have a real mellow approch to being a supervisor, ask anyone.

Ooooh, I don't know... She will want to kill the messenger. Think very hard first about if she has any dirt on you, any dirt at all, before you tell her. People don't want to think other people know bad shit about their kids.

I say don't do it. For all you know, he gets the weed from his mom's underwear drawer.

I like some kids that aren't my own. There are some cool kids out there. I hate the rest, though.

Too late. I told the boy he reminded me of awkwardboners.com come to life. He said that didn't help my case any. I know for a fact he looked it up when he got off the phone, so he isn't a shining example of normalcy, either.

People always say they want truth & honesty but often when they get it feelings get hurt and people get angry. Don't say anything. You can't trust her not to say it came from you when she confronts her kid. You don't want your child's school life made miserable because you tried to do the right thing. If it got out that it was you who told, your kid/s will pay the price.
