Military service is employment with high risk. They were paid wages. They weren't killed or maimed for free.
You sound as though you were describing mercenaries.
I believe that they they joined the military trusting their Government not to put them in harm's way needlessly.
A mistake in judgment (and an obvious one after Viet Nam) but that is the nature of patriotism.
And makes the betrayal of that trust so evil and inexcusable.

A person should know they are in a risky job when they hand you an M-16 when you get hired.
MOS is a job description, if yours read Infantry,Rifleman,EOD,engineer, and you didn't know you could end up in a war zone then something is terribly wrong with the intake process.
If you sat through the hand to hand,the firearms training, the PT,and the OB course and you didn't know you were training to be a soldier then something is very wrong with the intake process.

Other than what I've heard/read/saw about Vietnam this war in Iraq is the only war that was uncalled for. People died for NOTHING. Lives were lost, others were destroyed for NOTHING. Absolutely fucking nothing and as far as I can tell not too many people are bothered by that. There are those who will defend it with their dying breath. I wouldn't even consider defending it. We invaded a country & killed those who attempted to defend it and I think that's awful. Soldiers do what they are told. Whenever I think of this I think of Pat Tillman and the lying bastards who tried to cover that up as well. Fuck 'em all. I have nothing kind or supportive to say about those that run this shit and if anyone tries to tell me they are there fighting for my right to say this Ima tell you to eat shit & die because THAT'S a crock of shit too.
