Mickey Shunick, murdered. 22, La. vanished riding her bike
I would guess the first thing they'll determine is if her bike was thrown from the interstate (seems unlikely) or placed under the overpass from the surface road. About all this confirms, for me, is that he knows the area.

Two fishermen found the bicycle of missing Louisiana student Michaela "Mickey" Shunick today, more than a week after the 22-year-old woman went missing after leaving a friend's home on her bike.

Police found the bike early this morning under a bridge at Whiskey Bay on the Atchafalaya River, after being tipped off by the fishermen.

Shunick's family members were brought to the scene and confirmed that the bike is Shunick's black and gold Schwinn. Police are not releasing details on the bike's condition.

Police are planning to perform a grid search of the area where the bike was found on ATVs. Officers are searching the Atchafalaya River by boat, but the river's current was too strong to allow for divers this afternoon, police said.

Now Equusearch, the well-known search and recovery group, has turned out in force.

"We're hoping for the best," Tim Miller of Equusearch said. "We don't sugarcoat anything. It does not look good, doesn't look good at all, but we believe in miracles."

Hope they find this bloody truck, what was it doing before Mickey? were they at a Bar? did they stop at Circle K? if so maybe they've got a Circle K card and stop a lot. Were they driving across I 10 and knew Lafayette had a Circle K its not far from the gas station to get back on I 10.

Fox News (national) just reported on Mickey and showed pics of the white truck. NOTHING about her bike being found. Two days behind. Retards.

I hope this means that shoe prints or tire tracks can be collected to use to prosecute the perpetrator. How far away from her known bike route is this bridge? From my calculations it's between 25 and 30 miles.

NightOwl, some peeps in the area said it's 27 miles. Other stories about that area are pretty scary. Most say they wouldn't dream of getting off there. There's NOTHING there. It leads into those places where there are swamp people who live off the grid. Serious backwoods shit where no regular person should wander and outsiders are not welcome. It's also full of alligators and snakes.

I'd take my chances with the Toledo hoodrats before ever venturing into a place like that.

I just cannot wrap my brain around what it takes for someone to do this. This is whole other level beyond the usual trailer trash and hoodrats.

LC, have you ever had experience with one of these types of psychopaths or a serial killer?

If it was one of the backwoods types, I don't think the bike would have been found. I think it was dumped there to throw off the investigators.

KATC

A big development in the Mickey Shunick case with Lafayette Police confirming to KATC Sunday that they found Mickey's bicycle.

It was found 30 miles away from where Mickey was last seen, beneath the Whiskey Bay I-10 bridge, at exit 127 in Iberville Parish. Investigators spent much of the day there looking for more clues, but still no sign of Mickey.

By air, on the water and in the woods, several law enforcement agencies ramped up search efforts after two fishermen found Mickey's bike under the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge.

"We've expanded as wide as we feel comfortable. We don't miss anything, so it's quite a large area down there beneath the bridge and as well as the river," said Lafayette Police Corporal Paul Mouton. "They're checking further down the river as well as in close proximity to the bridge."

LC, I'd love for you to do a thread on that experience.

I have a new theory about why her bike was put there and it really bums me out to say it. There was a dead body dumped there, recently, by a serial killer (who was caught). I think putting the bike there is a mind game and a message. Mickey's bike = murder victim.

Yes! I think your new theory "hit the nail on the head". It's a real Psycho.

her poor mom is in a state of denial that is so sad and yet understandable, she feels someone had an accident and hit her bike. so in a way that reveals the possible condition of the bike, not in good shape.

Thank you zero for your shot of the map, made it so much easier for me to pull it up myself. I was looking at the area on google earth (satellite view for any who aren't familiar), fucking desolate. Such a bad feeling in my gut.

just curious SS, any more details you could provide on the stories about the area? I've read up a little about the serial killer who dumped the body near the same bridge (derrick todd lee, right?) and after checking that area out on google earth i'm kind of intrigued to know more.

KATC

Investigators, including the Lafayette Police Mounted Patrol Unit are searching again today for clues and evidence near the I-10 Whiskey Bay exit. Yesterday, fishermen found Mickey Shunick's bike beneath the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge at the Whiskey Bay exit 127 in Iberville Parish. The public should stay away from the area to allow investigators to their jobs.
