Jesus, what a crazy senseless act.

Both Obama and Romney have issued statements of condolensces to the victims' families and pulled Colorado campaign ads for the day.

What a nightmare for the families of the victims.

I feel for his family as well. I would be truely mortified if my child did something of this nature. I'd be mortified if he hurt someone, period. That's not how I raised him. I feel even worse for the victims families. Sickening and heartwrenching to boot.

What an asshole this guy is. He didn't even have the decency to kill himself or let the police do it for him.

Wait for it... the gun control screams will get deafening in 3...2...1...

LC, Who's the bald guy in the second picture?

From what's being reported this guy stood in line with the other patrons and was dressed as a ninja and armed with all that fire power and explosive cannister before entering the theater through the lobby. He sat patiently in the audience and after 20 minutes got up and started by throwing a tear gas cannister where upon he walked up and down the aisles shooting people.

An aspiring sportscaster who narrowly missed a fatal shooting in Canada in June was among the 12 victims gunned down at a Denver movie theatre during a late-night screening of the new Batman film.
Jessica Ghawi, who had moved from San Antonio to Denver last year, was shot after a gunman broke into the Aurora Mall cinema and fired at random 30 minutes into The Dark Knight Rises screening.
Just weeks earlier, Jessica had written a moving blog post after avoiding a deadly shooting in Eaton Mall, Toronto, where one man was killed and seven were injured on June 2.
And, in a further heartbreaking twist, she tweeted about how excited she was to see the Batman film just moments before Colorado gunman James Holmes, 24, broke in and fired at the audience.

In her blog post on June 5, Jessica wrote that she was in the food court of the mall just moments before gunfire broke out and an 'odd feeling' led her away.
'I say all the time that every moment we have to live our life is a blessing,' she wrote. 'So often I have found myself taking it for granted. Every hug from a family member.

'Every laugh we share with friends. Even the times of solitude are all blessings. Every second of every day is a gift. I know I truly understand how blessed I am for each second I am given.'
Just moments before the Denver shooting, Jessica, who also goes by the name Jessica Redfield, sent Tweets about her impatience to see the Batman film, writing: 'Movie doesn’t start for 20 minutes!'

A four-month-old baby who was injured in the shooting at a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, been released from University Hospital, HLN affiliate KDVR reports.

Raw video shows the infant resting peacefully in a family member’s arms as they walk through the hospital parking lot.

A six-year-old girl was shot and killed in the massacre. Her father was detained by Aurora Police in the Aurora Medical Center after learning of his young daughter’s death, according to KDVR.
The only reason people get lost in thought is because it's unfamiliar territory.

Shooting aside, I fear society is lurching into the abyss when there are people bringing children like 9 years, 6 years, or 3 month old babies out at 12:35AM to see A MOVIE.

I heard on the news this morning that he stashed his gear outside the emergency exit. Shortly in to the movie, he pretended to take a cell phone call, went outside, got geared up and came back in and threw a tear gas canister and then started shooting.

Some people have said he made a comment about being the Joker but I heard other witnesses say he didn't say a word.

User that's what i read too...that he had his gear stashed and propped open the emergency exit.

From http://abcnews.go.com/m/story?id=16817842

According to police sources, Holmes told the officers arresting him that he was "The Joker," referring to the villain in the second installment of the Batman movie trilogy, "The Dark Knight." He also warned police that he had booby-trapped his apartment, leading officers to evacuate the Aurora apartment building.

I'll take a five year old out at midnight on a school night to catch the first run of a Harry Potter movie. But he's a wizard, so you have to. He would know if you didn't.

I think it's odd about the 3 month old (only because keeping them quiet is difficult), but otherwise I don't think it's a sign of a pending societal abyss. It's summer break from school. My dad worked second shift for a lot of years and he'd take us to midnight showings whenever a new Star Wars or Star Trek movie came out. We loved it.

Yeah between the two things I'd say the crazy guy shooting up the theater is probably a better indicator of societal decay than letting the kids stay up late.

That was before the bloods and crips were ruralized... and before we made institutionalizing crazy people cruel and unusual punishment. I would argue that at least 12 people in Aurora wished we hadn't done that...

The world's a much different place than when you and I were children. Societal change isn't always for the good...

The perp did not display any craziness that would cause others to think he needed help. Though he was a loner. His choice to end his education may indicate he was giving up. I hear he looked for work and with all his scholastic achievements he could only land a job at Mc Donalds. His criminal record was only a traffic ticket. His mom may know something that could shed some light on this horrible act because it came as no surprise to her that he did this.

Sorry Jim. I disagree with you on this one. Taking children to midnight showings during the summer is not a sign of society lurching into the abyss, imo. Not then, not now. They can rest up before the movie and sleep late.

I grew up in a very gritty party of LA - I don't think Aurora, Colorado is less safe today than where I grew up was back then.

This happened because an uncertified (afaik) fuckin' nutcase made it happen. If he'd done it during the daytime showing, probably more children would have been shot. It could have happened anywhere, at any time of day and nobody who ended up getting shot could have seen it coming or could have prevented it. JMO.

It's just tragic and heartbreaking, all the way around. On that, I know we agree.

I mourn the senseless loss of innocent lives. It's breaks part of my soul to witness it over and over... and I struggle to understand why as a society we allow it and can't stand up against it.

It's going to come out that this guy was disturbed, and was being treated for mental illness. But the prevailing wisdom is that we can't keep them out of society - we need to heal them by including them in society. It's the same bullshit that gets carried over with pedophiles, child predators, and violent criminals.

But guess what? That doesn't work. It just adds to the body count eventually... either when they kill themselves, or take others out in their disillusioned world.

THEY CAN'T BE FIXED, AND WE NEED TO STOP TRYING.

I know many people are saying "What is this world coming to" as if violence such as this is new to our present generation or modern society. Random violence has always been there..I think it is the global media coverage that brings shit like this to the forefront.
This guy is being described as "Quiet" or "A nice guy". But I thing McVeigh and Dahmer were too. And Bundy.
Addressing bringing little kids to a movie...late or not, noisy or not...I think this should not be the issue that people choose to argue here. I mean, I am sure there are cases where the only way these families could have a night out would be to bring the kids. I am guessing they do not pay admission...and maybe cannot get a babysitter. I do not think young parents should have to forfet a night out because they cannot get someone to stay with the kids.
